Yeah. Talking about the harp is a little like asking your sister for advice on French kissing before your first date. David Barrettt actually breaks it down pretty scientifically in his lessons, which is cool, but also kind of weird, because I taught myself all the bends and such, just trying to get a particular sound, and when something worked, I kept doing it. Greene's advice for just practicing that lick, over and over, faster and faster, until it's muscle memory, pretty much describes how you get better at any instrument. You figure out the notes, however you can, as slow as ya gotta, a few notes at a time, if necessary. Then it's just repetition, with a conscious effort to make it faster and smoother.

That was a great interview with Buddy Greene, and his last few comments on how long it takes to "get ready for a show," is important when I talk with folk about playing the diatonic reed harps for Celtic music. Like any instrument, takes a lot slow, methodical preparation that soon becomes second nature. Thanks - KelticDead

The Irish tune, Musical Priest in Bm, can be played on a Low D harp. Paddy Richer (the third blow reed one tone higher) is great for most Irish tunes, however is not needed with this tune as you start at a higher position, bypassing the third blow note.

Yeah. It's easier to land - or at least appear to land - on the 3-bend that gives you the 5th (when you're playing in 3rd position). You've got a nice natural 5th with the 6-draw, but to get the 5th down below the root on the 4-draw, you gotta bend that 3-draw. It's easier to play that 3-bend in 3rd position as a passing note in minor blues or a pick-up note than it is to land on it, clean, with good tone and hold the note, for instance "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," where the "way" in "way up high" requires a 3-bend, if you're playing it in 1st position. And ya gotta sustain it, and it's gotta sound clean and melodic. It's worth working on, because the "up" part of the phrase "way up high" is so evocative. The audience's ear will forgive that 3-bend a lot easier if you're playing fast as opposed to slow.

Or maybe it's hard work and exorcise of ability. Try hard. Maybe you'll do something too. Chalk it up to some man in the sky and you'll end up doing nothing, and praying a whole lot. Hey, if that works, more power to someone who's not you. However, I think the hard work will probably be a better way to go.
