Speed Paint Squads of Space Marines for Horus Heresy with Contrast Paints!
#speedpaint #sonsofhorus #mediocrehobbies
Hi guys! Andy back again!
This time I’m putting my own videos to the test, to speed paint a squad of Mark V1 Sons of Horus Space Marines. With the amount of men we’ll need on the table for a game of Heresy, we’re going to need a good system for getting through all these models quickly and efficiently. Not including drying time for shades and the basing, the whole squad took about 3 hours brush time, which I think is very doable for most people to get through during a week! My main advice is to set mini goals to achieve in your hobby time, which also helps break down the mountain of models you might be facing right now! You can see how I apply the Sons of Horus scheme in this video to a ten man squad, but I have the full 18 Legions tutorials already posted so you can apply whichever scheme you like in the same way!
You can check out the Heresy Made Easy playlist right here:

Painting the way you describe is a luxury. For me it's usually, ok it's 4pm, I have 2 hours until I have to make dinner, get as much done in 2 hours as possible. Come back in 3 or 4 days and go again.

Tbh the layering doesn’t look better to me then the pre-layer. That’s the beauty of warhammer, all our eyes work differently. I also count my models out like you before contrast, I took a 4 year break I was mentally not able to paint anymore, but now I’m back and loving the contrast. Just did an entire seraphon army in 7 hours!

I just painted a unit of Incubi last week. I spent at least as long on each model as you did on your entire unit. Your results show an extreme mastery over maximum impact for minimal time investment. From arms-length on a gaming table there's no way my Incubi look any better than your Sons of Horus. Up close, it's possible that they might, but it's crazy to me that you're able to get results that would make me question that under such time constraints.

Really good video and a great result :) Because you're not really using the contrast basecoats all that much it might be worth skipping the zenithal, opting for a mid-grey instead. Then just paint on the SOH green and use the contrast just to create your recess shade. Just a thought on how to condense it down for an even faster paintjob :)

they look amazing. i must admit i was skeptical of contrast type paints but i they achieve a decent tabletop result for little effort. i guess you could embellish character models with a bit of edge highlihting etc
@MediocreHobbies

Yes of course! Save time where you can and use it for your characters-that’s what I do as well!
Setting achievable goals is a super smart thing to do and not just for painting large groups of models. It works for basically anything in life. It makes a large thing look less daunting and prevents your brain from getting overwhelmed and stuck. On top of that: you get to pat yourself on the back every time you hit a goal, which feels nice and helps motivate you for moving towards the next step. It works because it works with how our brains like to do things. They like digestible little chunks and regularly being rewarded. As silly as it may sound, breaking things down is how we survived as cave people and it will be how we get our armies painted!
@MediocreHobbies
2 жыл бұрын
Haha cave men wouldn't know what to make of us painting little toy soldiers! but yes, hitting that dopamine every time you complete a set/squad is great. Nothing worse than getting to the end of a painting session and not feeling like you've made any progress at all. Thanks for taking the time to comment and explain it better than I could, really appreciate it!
This was great. Love the tone you got for the green. Can I ask though - how thin was your SoH green? I find even on my wet pallette it's very opaque and doesn't allow the blue of the undercoat to come through!
@MediocreHobbies
2 жыл бұрын
It is quite thin. The basecoat does show through a little but not a crazy amount.
This was a great tutourial, but could you yell me how you make turquise contrast so smooth? Mine always comes up patchy
@MediocreHobbies

It’s all about loading on more then you need and moving it around. Not scrapping the brush across the model.

@@MediocreHobbies It might just be because the model is better. But I think the result has a nicer sea green color than the stumpier mk3.
Hey Andy, sorry to resurrect an hour of video for comments, but I was wondering if you could recall what size brush you use for all the base coat and contrast work?
That turquoise contrast paint looks like it goes on great! Can I ask why you put a layer of SoH green over the top at around 7:20? Doesn't that obscure the contrast paint? I'm still yet to use Contrast so not sure what the reasoning there was!
@MediocreHobbies
Жыл бұрын
The contrast is the basecoat for me so starting the colour. And the layer is to get the colour where it need to be.
I'm having a lot of trouble with the layer up fase with SOH green, it comes of very lightly and brush strokes are easily visible. Is it just a case of adding a million layers?
@MediocreHobbies
2 жыл бұрын
Em I wasn’t having that problem. Mine was mostly one coat and a second on some of the higher or more important parts like shoulder pads.
I just wish they had a true sons of horus contrast paint. Teradon torquoise just doesn't work for me on SoH, as its leaning to far into the blue, and not into the pale sea green that I so enjoy when seeing Sons of Horus usually. So unfortunately, Contrast doesn't seem to be a valid option for me here. Perhaps I'll have to give batchpainting the basecoat of the armor a go with an airbrush. Seems like the right tool for the job actually, as you can theoretically lay down a lot of even, smooth colors model for model in a relatively short amount of time, with great results even as a low skill airbrush user.
@MediocreHobbies
4 ай бұрын
That is indeed all true. It’s just not a tool everybody has.
@AdoringAdmirer

@@MediocreHobbies Yes, agreed. It is a steep investment for a tool that requires quite a bit of training and practice to get used to. Not everyone is willing or able to make this investment in both learning time and money, although I feel like once you have actually mastered it somewhat, it becomes invaluable.
did you use contrast medium for the basing? do you thin the gold or got it from the pot itself?
@MediocreHobbies

No medium was used. And maybe a touch of water for the gold but not much at all.

That’s totally cool if you want to stick to another method! Tutorials are here to help people, not tell them to change how they do things. Contrast paint can be used in any way, not just for the way it was originally designed for, Ive found a lot more used for it and enjoy this process so it’s what I do, but if you have your own process you enjoy, never feel the need to change!
