But that's the thing about the character, she is a tragic love in Peter's story. One of the only characters in comics to stay dead, and from there her death became part of the Mythos. This seried updates and toys with the Spider-Man Mythos, so it was the right call to give so much setup to the epic and tragic love story of Peter and Gwen. The one thing that actually could be bad about the show is that the creators confirmed that they didn't had plans to kill Gwen, but Peter would end up with MJ anyways, to me that would be a HUGE mistake.

Nothing wrong with that. I'm still hung up on Felicia/black cat as a love interest because of how perfect she was as partner material in the 90s Spiderman TAS. When I got older and read more comics and their history and how she's portrayed in almost every other adaption I realized they make for a rather toxic relationship elsewhere. I still want Felicia and Peter to end up together though (literally the only reason I bought Spiderman web of shadows originally was for the symbiote black cat ending... now that was a guilty pleasure). Similar to how I still want Bruce and Diana to end up together from the DCAU even though in virtually all other media their personalities don't have the chemistry they did from that animated universe.

Two quick things: 1) on the topic of Josh Keaton's voice acting career, it's really cool that wise men or someone else in the know brought him on to play the villain black spider on young justice. Very fun IYKYK stuff there. 2) there's a fantastic piece of fanfiction called Fighting Crime, Spinning Webs that continues the story after the cancellation of SSM and goes on to incorporate pretty much the entire Marvel universe into the story. The characterization for most of them comes from the other Yost-verse shows but include a lot of nods to both classic continuity and different adaptations, as well.

This and Insomniac's version of Peter Parker are my top favorites for versions of the character outside comics Really the only downside to this show is the fact it was never allowed to complete its story. It was a perfect medium between the stories and tone of the early Lee/Ditko/Romita Sr. stories and the modern aesthetics of the Ultimate universe, and did so many storylines justice, even incorporating arcs I never thought would be suitable for the age range it targeted like Harry Osborn's substance abuse. If it was able to properly tie up its loose ends with characters like Scorpion, Hobgoblin, Hydro-Man etc. It might've been absolutely definitive in my eyes Really hoping Freshman Year makes good on what it promises because it sounds on paper like the spiritual successor to SpecSpidey we need

The Spectacular Spider-Man is an outstanding example of serialized storytelling in North American animation. But, as good as it was, I feel the best we’ve gotten, so far, is the TMNT series, by Mirage Studios, which ran from 2003-2006. It ran 117 episodes and leaned much harder into serialized storytelling. It didn’t matter if it was a major character, supporting character or recurring character. They all had growth. Not one of them ended up the same way they started out. In my opinion, this take on TMNT is the one to beat.

I haven’t had the chance to watch this show or many others like BTAS, Batman Beyond, STAS and OG Teen Titans, but from what I had watched as a kid I realize that the early and late 2000’s for animated superhero media was on another level of quality. Shows like Justice League Unlimited, Young Justice and movies like The Hulk vs short films, Ultimate Avengers and Batman Under the Redhood have so much passion and effort behind them. They are the reason why I got into liking so many iconic heroes and villains I wouldn’t know otherwise if I didn’t watch these shows and movies. They’re still some of my favorite pieces of media as an adult and it’s just so depressing looking back because it’s so hard now to find quality and passionate superhero media that was so commonly found just over a decade ago.

I think my only complaint was brought up early in this video and was pointed out in others- they genuinely made every girl Peter’s into or is into Peter SO likable that it’s absolutely PAINFUL to see each girl getting stuck on the stupid “will they won’t they” merry go round Peter and his love interests always end up in. They honestly made Liz Allen almost TOO likable and sympathetic, to the point it’s genuinely difficult to see how she gets treated by Peter. Like of course we want to see Peter and Gwen succeed, but seeing it at the expense of Liz makes it something you kind of actually DON’T want to happen. I know in the comics Peter doesn’t really hit the “popular guy” status until college and that’s originally when Gwen and Peter really start trying to be a couple, so Liz Allen getting more spotlight during the high school years is feasible, it just feels like too long to be playing red light green light with the love triangle. That is honestly one of the only big gripes I have with the show. In terms of MJ, who really isn’t a focal point, I found that refreshing because MJ really wasn’t much more than an occasional date and friend to Peter for most of these stories. The point of MJ was always that she was kind of a friend that was always in the background up until Gwen’s passing, where she stepped up to try and support him and the two grew close. I was happy they stayed true to that, even letting Mary Jane pull her “matchmaker” thing with Gwen, trying to set Gwen up with Peter. She’s one of my favorites in Peter’s cast for the way she developed for that reason, and I was glad to see her be able to play the role she was originally meant to play instead of replacing Gwen or any of the other girls in Peter’s life.

In the Raimi films he simply let go of his hate for Sandman by the end but it's all sorts of clear he resents him by the end of the episode leaving room for interesting ideas to play out! One problem I always had with Spectacular was probably Eddies transformation into Venom. Mainly because the point where Eddie turns on Peter was because he kept bailing on his friends to do something Eddie deemed was selfish. I thought that when the symbiote told Eddie Peter’s identity, he would have some kind of revelation that Peter wasn’t just a selfish prick. Especially when Eddie would have realised that Peter basically saved Eddie’s life from the Lizard. But instead he immediately goes into wanting to get revenge with no acknowledgement of why he started to hat Peter in the first place. Maybe this could have been acknowledged if the show went on. But it’s just something that bothered me me on first viewing.

  • @GamerSlyRatchet1

Eddie already had a twisted view on Peter because he was jealous that he was raised by Uncle Ben and Aunt May while he was alone. He needs reasons to justify his hatred of Peter, and it's why he twisted "Peter's Spider-Man, he's not a selfish prick after all" into "Peter's Spider-Man? And he didn't trust me with that?!" And by the time he gets a taste of the symbiote, he doesn't feel alone anymore, so he keeps feeding it hatred.

I mean, the symbiote basically induces hatred and malice in someone. Peter had it be a slow burner, because deep down he’s not really a hateful guy and it takes a lot to get him to submit to the symbiote. Eddie on the other hand is shown to have hatred built into his personality, he’s an easy target for the symbiote.

At this point, the symbiote would tweak its wearer's memories to control their emotional state so it could feed on their rage. This came from Paul Jenkins run on Spidey.

I remember the cartoon, in my dub, each and every single voice had the va's of the spiderman movie trilogy, like, even the secondary characters! (Except Harry, for some reason, I guess the va of the movie Harry sounded way too old for his age, then) And I think that was amazing, because it felt like watching an alternative version of the movie :)

Greg Weisman is quite possibly the greatest writer for animation ever. He creates character development on a level I don't think I've seen before. It really sucks that he seems to be cursed that any show he works on doesn't go past its 2nd season.

Before we got the news about the 90s X-Men show coming back yeah I'd be right there with ya on moving on. But nah now that there's interest shown in bringing these back, and seeing how it happened with young justice as well, this show deserves to continue especially since it did seem like one with a solid outline for where they wanted to take it.

I love this cartoon I have the entire series on dvd josh Keaton is one of my favourite adaptations of Spider-Man And I honestly like how this show handled the uncle Ben killer story more than Spider-Man 3 mainly because it didn’t retcon anything no I didn’t like how they handled the uncle Ben killer story in Spider-Man 3. sandman already had a great backstory stealing money to save sick and dying daughter they didn’t need to make him uncle bens killer on top of that

  • @galactic85

    @galactic85

Making sandman uncle bens killer was a horrible choice. It removed Peter's direct responsibility for his uncle's death. Instead of a single selfish choice causing his uncle's death it becomes more just random chance. Additionally it removes Peter's guilt over being responsible for his uncle's death in a bug way and the movie doesn't contend with that in any way. The heartfelt scene in spider-man 2 where he tells aunt may the truth is rendered meaningless. I understand that rhey wanted to give sandman A personal connection to Peter but the solution should have been to have sandman accidentally hurt aunt may. That would have worked so much better than what we got.

@@galactic85 , your not getting it. There's lessons in the rami trilogy. The first is about responsibility. The second is about trying to find a way to balance both Peter's life and spider-man saving lives. The 3rd is about forgiveness.

Didn't they retcon Uncle Ben's killer into Black Cat's dad? Are y'all wearing nostalgia goggles for a Weisman show again? Because that's what gave us the last few seasons of Young Justice, which were a trainwreck.

This is definitely the best animated incarnation of Spider-Man. That said, I remember watching this on CW 4 Kids back in the day when it was still new. And I remember being kind of mad at the black suit in the show at first because it looked a lot closer to how it did in Spider-Man 3. But, the way they have it slowly mutate into the more traditional black symbiote suit over the course of a few episodes was a brilliant way to subvert my expectations. Damn I miss this show!

I like Electro because he's kind of a mirror to Peter Parker. He's an everyman mechanic, not much special about him besides maybe being a bit smarter than your average bloke who stumbles onto powers by complete chance. He's a mirror in the sense that while he does have great power, he never had to learn about responsibility, and I like the idea that Spider-Man reinforces that from time to time. Max Dillon and Peter Parker aren't all that unlike each other and could easily have swapped places given the circumstances.
