Speckled Trout- Sneaky Strategies!

On this episode I discuss my thoughts on boats and anglers affecting speckled trout movement. I throw everything but the kitchen sink this morning but all they would eat is live bait. The truth is, this was not a great morning for feeding, but live bait will often produce some fish when artificial will not. Just like a Large Mouth Bass, a trout is only going to let that minnow sit in his area for so long before he's had enough.

    Man.. this was a great video! What an awesome day for you out there. It looked like an amazing day, calm, no boat traffic and nice trout on the hook. I would be lying if I said I were not jealous! Have not been able to get out there for a few weeks now and I’ve got the shakes! As always… thanks for posting high quality videos that include great info and insight. Look forward to the next.

    Grreat to see another video from you! As always, creative camera angles. Those trout are such beautiful fish--especially nice ones like you were catching. A little surprise multi-species action, eh? With live bait, you never know what will bite! Great action and tips on the slip bobber rig. I've used those a lot when fishing for catfish under a float so I can easily adjust the depth--especially if I need to fish deeper than my rod is long! Keep 'em coming!

    You guys are so right regarding boat presence impacting fish in the area. Also, noise within a boat, like steeping heavily or jumping down from a front or rear platform. I was out with a buddy fishing in a similar creek a month or so back and threatened to throw him over if he kept stomping around (he was smacking and dodging mosquitoes / biting flies! Haha)

    I was checking out the slip float you were using… is that a stick / peg style stopper? Just curious as I may give it a try. I like using slip float in cold weather with live bait. Been using the Betts Lures Billy Bay slip bobbers (based out of Fuquay Carine NC)…they utilize the slip/line knot. Great to fish with but you have to toss the slip knot and use a new one, if you are switching off lures on the same pole. Also, plan on trying the circle hooks as you mentioned, in lieu of my goto treble hooks.

  • @haltysalty7537

    @haltysalty7537

    Жыл бұрын

    It is the peg style. I've used the Billy Bay too and they work good. I think the peg style have better visibility in low light. I've experimented with treble hooks and they hook fish good but live bait tends to come off due to the smallness of hook.

    what depth are you looking for in the creeks? I've heard you mention "deep water" but give no reference to what that is?

  • @haltysalty7537

    @haltysalty7537

    Жыл бұрын

    I like a creek in winter that has up to 6 or 7 ft depth minimum. Some of the creeks I fish are as deep as 15'. I believe when the temp drops below 45 degrees for consecutive days, large trout will not tolerated the 3-5 foot range. Small trout, 12-17" will still stick around in the shallower water but most of the big girls are looking for depth and consistent temps that won't freeze. The creek in this video, when the air warmed up the next week, all the trout moved right out. It's a temperature/timing thing. If you're cold and uncomfortable, they're probably there.

    In the winter they will go deep into the interior. Also can depend on how far salinity pushes up river. At present time it is very far up rivers in NC due to lack of rain.

    Ron, I'd prefer not to say. I mean no disrespect and while it seems like a harmless question to answer, I wouldn't want to be responsible, in any way, for blowing up a spot where others fish too. There are only so many creeks in each county, savy researchers use process of elimination to pinpoint spots rather than putting in the work to find their own. And you can't hardly blame them, we all work our jobs all week and just want to maximize our on the water time. The take away I should have mentioned in the video is that this trip was after a week of cold temps and it pushed fish back into creeks. It's a protective mechanism trout have. I'm sure most creeks were good around this particular window, as opposed to open water and shoreline.
