Special Ops Sniper Rates 8 Sniper Scenes In Movies | How Real Is It? | Insider

Ойын-сауық

Nicholas Irving, author and former soldier, rates 8 sniper scenes for realism in movies. Known as "The Reaper," Irving says he killed 33 enemies as a sniper for the US 3rd Ranger Battalion. He is the co-author of "Reaper: Drone Strike: A Sniper Novel."
Irving rates the realism of classic war movies such as "Clear and Present Danger" (1994), and "Enemy at the Gates" (2001). He breaks down long-range-sniping scenes featuring Will Smith in "Gemini Man" (2019) and Mark Wahlberg in "Shooter" (2007).
He also looks at modern-day war movies set in Iraq and Afghanistan, such as "American Sniper" (2014), "Lone Survivor" (2013), and "The Hurt Locker" (2009). Irving rates the realism of the weapons used, along with body position, stealth, and environment.

    Do you think that he actually did that math in his head? he knows it already because he has calculated that many times, 40 inches is almost equal to a meter, so that is one of the most common conversions you do as a sniper, also, he doesnt even know what he is doing, that "constant" is just the conversion between inches to milimiters.

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@AlexSmith-tz2lf No need to do the D.O.P.E. on that one lol, you use it cus it's quicker but essentially it can be done the hard way with mental math as well. He gives you an estimated height of the object (Obj), he gives you an actual height of the image (Img), he knows the distance his eye is from his scope (b). He wants to know the distance from his scope to the target (v). Magnification N = Img/Obj = b/v -> v = b*Obj/Img, neglects inaccuracies of the scope but for theory, job done. It's very simple math to do on the fly. Now what he did there was take an experimentally established scope constant (B) including both b and all the inaccuracies of this specific rifle and scope he's working with, the offset from the scope to his barrel, thick lens corrections, probably some factors you wouldn't even think of but don't matter now since it's experimental data that includes all of that. Then he says okay now v=B*Obj/Img because that's what it's going to hit like in reality. He might have very well written down that constant in his D.O.P.E. that sounds like a smart thing to do in case your memory goes hazy, but he still did the same maths regardless in this instance.

    The other scary thing he forgot to mention with saving private ryan is the fact that in order for a scope shot to work, the enemy sniper has to be dialed in on you perfectly too. Eh less than that tight. You would not try and intentionally shoot through a scope, so for it to happen it would be a guy turning to face you the second you fired. You definitely had at least a second or two before he truly reacted and tried shooting.

  • @kevinlabo2310

    @kevinlabo2310

    10 ай бұрын

    @@fearedjames no it is that tight. The lenses are curved inside that scope. Yes no sniper would ever intentionally aim there but they might be going for a headshot and the bullet happened to hit the scope. In order for that bullet to make it through the scope it has to hit exactly square on all lenses. Which also means the lenses in the hit scope have to be mounted perfect. Myth Busters did an amazing teat on this to show how hard it is to get a bullet to go through one.

    The formula for estimating range using mil dots is as follows: Range (in yards) = Size of Target (in inches) / Size of Target (in inches per mil) Here's a breakdown of the steps: Measure the size of the target in inches. In your example, the target is 40 inches tall. Determine the size of one mil. In the US military, the standard size is often considered to be 3.6 inches per mil. However, mil-dot scopes may have different subtensions (the size of the mils), so it's essential to know the specific subtension of your scope. Let's assume your scope uses 3.6 inches per mil. Divide the size of the target in inches by the size of one mil to get the range in yards: Range (in yards) = 40 inches / (3.6 inches/mil) = 11.11 yards per mil Now, if you said the target appeared 2 mildots high in your scope, you can calculate the range: Range (in yards) = 2 mildots x 11.11 yards/mil = 22.22 yards So, if the target is 2 mildots high in your scope, it is approximately 22.22 yards away. In your provided formula with X as 25.4, it seems like the conversion from inches to millimeters is happening.

    That shot through the scope was recreated (no elevation) on Myth Busters. They rendered it a myth. Later, I saw a different show recreate it, same result. THEN, they used a scope that was common for the time. It only had two lenses, whereas modern scopes have 3 or more. With the two lens scope, they were able to shoot through the scope and contact the dummy in the eye.
