Special Ed: I Turned Down Beats from Jermaine Dupri Out of Loyalty to Howie Tee (Part 5)

Part 4: • Special Ed on Signing ...
Part 6: • Special Ed on Hanging ...
--------
Hip-Hop legend Special Ed discussed his music career. Despite his album going gold and two other hit singles, he felt disrespected as he did not receive the increased royalties promised to him in his contract. Ed also discussed the lack of collaborations between artists at that time and his dedication to working with just one producer. Additionally, Ed talked about his journey of buying two condos in Brooklyn. Although there were issues with these properties, they accrued in value, offering him some financial security. Furthermore, Ed spoke about his sophomore album "Legal" and its hit song "The Mission," sharing that the original version of the plot was shut down by the label, resulting in a new, revised one that actually got radio airplay.

Howie Tee is the most underrated producer form that era. He deserves more respect, he should always be mentioned ✊🏾

Special Ed is one of the realist one they don’t made them like this anymore! He doesn’t bite his tongue for shit ! It’s the Brooklyn ways ! One love for my Caribbean bro! Straight up Zoe 🇭🇹

Dupri wasn't anywhere near as hot as Howie T back then. Those guys were crawling while Special Ed was walking. Two totally different era's of time in music.

Before watching the video...Wow... This is a special Friday treat. Let me get my popcorn ready.
I was just an elementary school kid and my father who loved hip hop blasted the special ed cassette constantly. First emcee that had record after record on a tape that I couldn’t get enough of. SPECIAL ED influenced my rapping more than I knew. Respect Ed!!!! Lemme get a feature 😂😂
Vlad has no sense. Taking beats from Jermaine Dupri who was a DJ for Silk Tymes Leather (which most people probably never knew) would not have done anything for his career. Vlad’s comment (even if not intentional) was nothing more than a diss to Howie Tee, because a young JD at that time wouldn’t have changed anything.

It’s subjective. It may have catapulted him a little higher. But he didn’t make a bad decision. He was loyal to his home team and still had success.

I think it's more about relationships. You never know what will happen with people or where life will take you or them. Ed could have continued his career on So So Def in the 1990s if that would have happened, who knows? The thing I think Vlad is saying is build relationships. I don't think he was dissing Howie Tee

Well, Dupree HAS produced plenty of hits for numerous hip-hop artists (including Jay-Z), so maybe Vlad felt that he could’ve made a hit for Ed. 🤷🏽♂️
@jackjill8129

He wasn't just their DJ, they were his first act before he got QT (who would later become Left Eye of TLC) and Kris Kross. I said that to say JD had his fingers on the pulse of some big things early on. Who knows how it woulda played out, but I agree Vlad shouldn't have said it in such a matter of fact manner.

"480 sup'um" that's when the yaad man dialect kicked in 😄
This dude is completely out his mind thinking that JD would have gotten a placement over Howie T during those times. He has no idea of what those JD beats sounded like back then.🤦🏾♂️

Yeah because not too long after this he produced on TLC's first album and he produced Kris Kross. JD is top 3 most underrated producers in my opinion. His name doesn't come up enough in those types of discussions. But on the flipside maybe it wouldn't have gone anywhere. It's one of those things where we never know how it woulda played out.
Special Ed is dope 🔥🔥🔥🔥💯

Imagine if recored labels thought that way today. Alot of violence in the hood and beyond would be cut in half
I got it made
Good decision. Howie is by far the better producer.
@7:33 like the Gangsters rappers 🙂
Vlad always doing this rubbish.... What's with the had it been he went with JD,with JD,there wouldn't had been I got it made.. very annoying dude
Man imagine if the label let Ed dropped the OG “The Mission”! They basically wanted Ed to be one of those good clean rappers like Kid N Play 🤦🏾♂️. Ed would’ve gotten street credibility if that was on the album even if it wasn’t a single. I wonder if Ed thought about putting that in the album and not a single at the time? “Come On Let’s Move It” and “The Magnificent Remix” was already big hits
And where's Howy T now
