Awesome -- thanks for explaining that. I ran into the exact problem a couple weeks ago when I cut down a tall skinny birch tree. It pinched my saw and went 90 degrees to the direction I wanted. Thankfully, there were really no negative consequences, but I have one more similar tree sitting close to my tractor shed, and would rather it not fall on it -- went searching for a video, and here you are!

Thanks for this- great video and very timely! I have a bunch of 100 plus foot Fir trees with diameters between 8 and 16 inches spaced closely together. They are adjacent to my Tractor Barn and other structures. It is always an adventure dropping them as they pretty much do what they want to without extra guidance. Maybe now I can save my come-a-long and rope pull method. I'll be trying this out in a few days, so wish me luck!

I have used part of this Method. I use the center cut to leave the hinge on the sides but never with the Notch Beneath the cut with a wedge before. This makes a very good control cut. Thanks for the good advice

Beware. Plunge/bore cut requires knowledge before trying. I use this on my thinning cuts in production forest, nz.

Super cool. Thanks for sharing this. Have a lot of tall skinny firs on my property, might give this a shot once I practice a bit more with plunge cuts. Btw, I copied your sawmill stand design, really liking it so far. Nice to have it up off the ground a bit without having to purchase the trailer from WM.

Interesting technique... I love seeing different ideas, but I’m always skeptical of techniques that make things needlessly complex or time consuming. Your facecut is really at least twice as deep as it needs to be. A shallower and taller face cut will provide plenty of relief and leave you more than enough room to drive wedges. To each their own, I just tend to prefer simplicity and efficiency.

@@fcernst or hearing aid. Hey, some of us have experienced hearing Loss and it wasn't damaged voluntarily. When my first hunting season my brother-in-law was looking at a deer across the ravine. You're standing behind me into my left. I had a doe tag he had a Buck tag. I saw it was a Bucky fired. Ruptured my left ear drum. Thirty or forty years later I had a hearing check up in the guy said I don't know if I can help your left ear cuz it looks so bad thru his lighted scope but when he cleaned it out a blood clot came out been there since that shot.

Doing the Backcut first only works effectively IF you can get the wedge in before the kerf pinches closed. iow.Not a good idea for TALL skinny trees. For really tall skinny trees you could change to a slim sculpture GBar and try the Hertz schnit /Plunge cut first, followed by the notch and two elevated Backcuts as explained in this Letterbox / Palm Cut video. (Don't be surprised if the wedge is spewed out as the tree falls)
