    Great video. I liked your comment about using a reel too soon. I only dived shore entry dives with a float and float line and it worked great, but I think new divers need one or the other as it would be a potential problem trying to land one of these fish without a reel or float line, due to their dirty fighting tactics and immense power. Keep up the good work.

    I have been spearing for a couple years, but I’ve only been able to go in kelp forests and shallow (0-20’) reefs. I don’t have a reel on my gun right now, but I am heading to San Diego for a spearfishing trip next month. Would it be dumb to go after a king if I don’t have a reel? Also, do you have any recommendations on a good reel and line for a cheap price? I have a JBL 110 woody and would love to put a reel on if I can get a quality setup without breaking the bank

    Cheers man, i've seen a few vids of guys employing techniques but still very desperate, mad grunting all the way from surface to kelp and desperate movements. I have to say to any new guys reading this that the grunting is used sparingly as it is not that necessary but helps when fish are being stubborn.

    Awesome video, super helpful. I was out today and I tried strumming my rubbers, brought a school in out of nowhere but they were mostly rats. Do you think it depends on size when it comes to strumming vs gulping or is it just personal preference?

  • @AquaticRehabSpearfishing

    @AquaticRehabSpearfishing

    4 жыл бұрын

    Grunting is not really a technique to bring them out of nowhere if they are not in the area - it’s more of a technique to use when you know they are nearby and you want to increase your chances of them coming to visit you while you are down on their level. Kingfish are generally more curious of a grunt and in my tests (at depth) and they make a more notable turn in to me from a distance compared to when I’m lying on the reef and watching them out in the haze and strumming rubbers (should’ve included some footage). The size depends on where you are diving or what is in the water in your vicinity. I have to stress it’s not a surface technique it’s something I do on the reef when I know kingfish should be in the vicinity (just so ppl aren’t floating around on the surface grunting looking like something out of a fuct up horror film). In saying all of this strumming can be used on the surface to create some sounds and commotion as well as slapping fins on the surface or hitting the water but generally just descending into the right area and waiting is good enough to bring them in 90% of the time.

    This guy is the King fish whisperer, He probably even smells like them ;) But seriously that is good advice explained exceptionally well; I live in gods country now; and most of what you said is pertinent with pelagic up here as well. I remember being surrounded by a curtain of them, about 79-90 of them in tighter formation, all eyes on me in about 15m at Point Perpendicular JB back in the eighties, it was so beautiful I forgot to take the shot. I'll show my boy the video see if he is keen to go South for a look/see. Kind regards for the memories and good advice: Alex

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thorfinn986_doesn't_do_average it’s all subjective bro and there’s a lot too it so it’s hard to cover in a KZread reply. Essentially the basics are understanding co2 tolerance. Also understanding the dangers of over breathing / hyperventilating. I’ve made a 54 minute video on how to increase breath hold for spearfishing and the link is in the description to this video if you want to check it out. Also if you want info on breath hold courses locally DM me on fb or insta I can put you in the right direction.
