Spearfishing Downtown Kona and I Got Poisoned!

Ойын-сауық

Aloha!
In this video Danny and I take the kayaks out and go spearfishing in downtown Kona! We dive the Predator shipwreck and do a crazy drift. We run into all kinds of shenanigans and score some killah grindz. We make some delicious sushi with our catch and I end up getting ciguatera poisoning!

So sorry this happened, though it was only a matter of time when consuming reef fish. Solution: Make tea out of dried leaves [ not the fruit! ] of the octopus tree ( Heliotropium arboreum, aka. 'false tobacco' in French -- "faux tabac" -- because the leaves are velvety and resemble tobacco leaves ), which is common along the shores of Hawaii. You can also add a 1sq inch piece of bark to the infusion. Do not smoke the leaves. Note: French Polynesians who live on atolls contaminated by cig, use 'false tobacco' leaves daily by stuffing them into fishes' abdominal cavity when cooking, or into the broth. Families who do that supposedly never get 'the itch' ( French: "la gratte" ) from cig poisoning. Dried leaves are more potent. The compound is related to rosemary, so you may try that as well. Do your research. Trivia: According to Wikipedia, some anthropologists theorized that cig contamination may have spurred Polynesian migration through the Pacific.

Excellent proverb. Thanks for sharing! Note: Regarding cig contamination, this maxim only applies to reef fish, but not pelagic ones, like tuna, which don't get cig because they ordinarily don't live near it or consume it ( cig comes from an algae growing on reefs ). Big pelagic predators potentially have other issues, though.

I from Kona and would nevah eat reef fish hahaha. I sked da fish this side lol. Oh and on a side note. Every person is different. It's the build up of the toxin Gambierdiscus Toxicus in your body that either push you over the edge or be at the borderline. Every person is different. I have friends that eat Ulua and Kahala on the wide and they're fine. I had friends who ate a couple pieces of Yellow Eye Kole and went balls out sick and down for the count for weeks kind. It's a gamble. No where in this island chain is safe. I'm born and raised in an area where there was not 1 single hotel that could cause the toxin to flourish like Kona but we still have cases. Fish do travel and humans love to eat fish. It's a gamble every time you take a bite of that fish. But to me... since i'm a born and raised fishaman.....i'll gladly take that gamble. LOL>
