Spearfishing Deep Offshore Oil Rigs $2000 Mistake || Narrated Breakdown of Scenarios & Big Cubera

Ойын-сауық

This video is the day after the last video's trip! Back out on the deep rigs. In this one I break down the risk of spearing big cuberas in the rig and recap last video's run-in.
Then, we have it all go wrong on a deep trigger pull... & we lose $2000 worth of gear.
Not quite the start I had hoped for. Part two of this day we have better luck though.

    Most very experienced people have had the most unlikely failures of gear, or unique conditions that cause a failure situation. Especially when in extreme conditions or situations where there’s not much room for error. You can explain it to less experienced people, but it takes years to gain that knowledge. It’s just really weird how the smallest component failure can cause catastrophic problems. I can relate ,, with failures of gear in extreme cold conditions . Especially a lot of modern novelty materials or “ Aerospace”, BS …there’s a solid reason professionals keep gear as simple and proven as possible. Excellent video! Much to be learned.

    Have you considered using mono for the leader? Its very common here in Southern Cal. Stiffer and less likely to muzzle wrap, though it can still happen.

  • @BradenSherron

    @BradenSherron

    Mono cuts very easily on the rig legs. The dyneema has been great but occasionally if the shooting line is too slack air it’s not wrapped super clean it can tangle.. Totally hear on the moon and stiffness- I love that about it but just doesn’t work around the rigs in our experience.

    Do you all ever do any barnacle scraping? We would not only scrape barnacles off the rig, we would also gather a giant bag of barnacles, smash them up with a hammer or a wrench, mix in some cheap tuna and pour that down to the next level. Woukd work great sometimes, sometimes it attracted too many fish and you couldn't see anything.

    I use a 3 foot bungee between my gun and belt reel, works well. Wouldn't have helped in that situ though. Surprised your slip tip wire doesn't damage your roller/rubber , don't need it all tucked through like that. Great footage as always.

    Sucks you lost your gun. I love my Koah Fatback (hiploader) and I really really love my Daryl Wong hybrid (chestloader). They’re both simpler than the double roller setup and kill everything we shoot in Alabama waters that are almost identical to the rigs and fish you shoot in Texas. They’re both awesome to deal with. John at Koah and Daryl Wong will work with you to get the exact gun you need. And Daryl let’s you pick your colors if you want it painted. Good luck and keep the videos coming.

If you have some time look up the Rob Allen spearfishing channel here on youtube and search for the Muzzle Wraps and Reels - 2023 video. I’ve never had a muzzle wrap in my life. Not sure what I’m doing right but I’m not changing. The muzzle on rollers seems very complex. Idk I like traditional guns myself. I think banded right they are almost as good and they are heaps cheaper. I shoot large fish with my 105 and 2 14mm bands and I string fish that I have no business stringing. That’s why I think the setup at least rivals a roller. I agree with the Greek reels, I use a meandros reel and it’s bullet proof as far as I’m concerned. You do need to always wind the line in good and taught though.

  • @BradenSherron

    Biggest reason has been because it also prevents us divers from accessing areas in the rig as well. With decent current most days the line gets hung up all over the place, preventing swimming around or diving to depth. Your'e right on though about a float being ideal though for preventing the fish from doing that, theres the no doubt. Just a matter of getting around and diving with the line. . Diving outside the rig on the down current side is the best option, put it does prevent swimming through and around to where fish could be. with all that said I do have some ideas though I will try...

Although for a lot of them, they forgot they weren't using their gun that had a connection point like a lanyard and think they have the fish on a reel, but they don't have their reel gun. They let their gun go and forget that the gun isn't connected to anything. So the fish takes off and they let the gun go and realize too late...that fish isn't connected to anything,

    Well once I clipped on the belt reel cutting the line would’ve had the same result to losing the gun.. hindsight is 2020. It would have been nice if my dive buddy could get to the gun in time, however he was most concerned on making sure I made it to the surface without blacking out. The gun and gear was far beneath him to try to even attempt at the rate it was sinking, and if he did go after it I’d be unwatched at the surface for a good period.
