Hello Rachel. Tks for your all lessons. Here in Brazil, there are specific cities that gather words like American speakers and sometimes for me in other city is sometimes very confuse to understard them. This kind of confusion happens in different regions in United states? As a english learn, for me is very important to know your tips, but sometimes I'm afraid to crente new english talking in this way.
Awesome! New style teaching I wait for your lecture from Koera.

Ponto. :)

Can you talk about primary stress and secondary stress? In the word 'pronounciation', primary stress is on 'a', secondary stress is on 'noun', for example. What if there is no secondary stress in this word? Would one pronounce it differently? What if the primary stress is on 'noun' and the secondary stress is on 'a'?
@rachelsenglish
Жыл бұрын
Most dictionaries put primary stress on the 4th syllable and secondary stress on the 2nd syllable like this, [ prəˌnʌn siˈeɪ ʃən].

They're just making it difficult for us to get them. But we understand that we have to adapt, not them. The thing is that it takes time. I've been learning English for 6 years now but still don't get every word in a single sentence when native Americans speak. That sucks! Anyway, I guess I need to do more. Thank you for your help, Rachel. 🙏

Hi Rachel, I noticed that you stress 20 in 25. I thought that in numbers the last digit would be usually stressed, in this case, 5.
@rachelsenglish
Жыл бұрын
Great question! It always depends on context.
❤
I remember that you have a video where you explain why some dictionaries show commas within the IPA of some words and you say that it is because they are showing the stress through those commas so I would like to know which video it is to watch it again because I want to know how I can understand the stress of words by looking at the IPA and I think that you were using the Cambridge English dictionary to show that because that's one that has those commas. Would you or Rachel's if you get to see this comment tell me which video it is?
@rachelsenglish
Жыл бұрын
Great question! I'm not sure which video that is, but when you see this mark [ˈ] you know that the following syllable has primary stress. For example, "American" is written [əˈmɛɹ ɪ kən]. The stress is on [mɛɹ]. When you see this mark [ˌ] you know that the following syllable has secondary stress. For example, "graduation" is written [ˌgɹæ dʒuˈeɪ ʃən]. The primary stress is on [ˈeɪ] and the secondary stress is on [ˌgɹæ].
Wow Rachel! You are so beautifull!
