Holy crap this is one of the best tutorials I've seen on KZread. Pretty in depth. Not sure what locker solution to go with but this has definitely given a TON of information to take into consideration.

Thanks Kyle for posting this video. I put the Spartan Locker in the rear with the stock axles. The traction is great and except for the normal popping a Spartan locker makes I love it. My next move is 26 spline axles in the front with the Spartan Locker! Your videos have made it much easier for me to get these lockers in...much thanks!

That popping is normal?? i just installed a lockright in my rear diff on my geo tracker and i feel like its breaking parts in there it pops and clunks loud, people turn and look at my car if something was breaking. I’m afraid to drive it i might have missed a step on the install and ruin my whole diff. Please help me out !

Installed these on my daily driven/ weekend warrior Samurai years ago and been loving the results. I installed them in a similar fashion and after years of use, had no issues. Does take some getting used to on street around corners. Rolling on 33s with chromos front and rear with rear disk and still holds up! Opens up a whole world of possibilities when taking some tough runs through orv parks or technical terrain. Finally got some dana 44s to build, but will keep rolling on these in meantime. These Samurai rigs are a blast! Note: There's a break in period for the lockers. The popping should go away after that period, but could occur on rare occasions upon hard acceleration. Also, learn to coast around corners on the street. There's a noticeable clicking sound, but it's not too noticeable or loud.

@Fortune Off-Road Good point. Used, but maybe not broken in enough? You can also buy a new set of springs if the old ones are too worn out. Hopefully it resolves itself through additional use for ya.

Great video!! I've been wanting to install a Spartan Locker in my Tin Top Jimny, but have been pretty wary of doing it because of the backlash part of it. You make it seem extremely easy and your markings definitely seem to help make reassembly effortless. I'll be tackling this soon!

@@FortuneOffRoad @Fortune Off-Road I'm going to order it this weekend! Another thing that kind of stopped me was that they are labeled for 26 spline side gears... but the gears just drop in, so they old ones can still be used. I look forward to tackling this!

Hay Kyle I had the same popping problem with my sparten locks in the rear & front differentials of my samerai until I put 75-140 gear oil & posi-Trac limited slip gear oil additive. My samurai is used for a daily driver and weekends rock crawling and hard trails. This oil mixture has taken care of all the popping and The Binding of the Spartan Locker I installed it over 2 years ago still going strong. Hope this works for you. Thanks for the video Suzuki PA

What additive did you use? My limited understanding is that posi/limited slip additives don't benefit mechanical lockers. My hunch is that a heavier gear oil is all that is helping dampen the noise.

I’ve had my Spartan installed and running bel Rey 80-90 with a lsd supplement . Diff makes little to no noise really only on serious turns . Haven’t broken my rear axle either and I’m stock axles on 35’s.

@@FortuneOffRoad can’t remember the brand but any supplement should work. If it’s still noisy after running the oil and supplement and you also feel it locking up while turning I’d recommend scrapping it back out and re-installing. The guy that did my install did some modification to the spring I believe that made it slightly less aggressive but still work like it’s supposed to. I’ve been running it for years and haven’t had any issues with it. Also holds up well in tough tracks.

I would always recommend doing a dial indicator measurement before and then after you reinstall to match the readings. Setting them up to “speck” from a manual after the fact can be way off what they where before you pulled them out. You want them exactly where they were before because they are worn in in that position and will give the least noise and strongest strength. Yes, you could theoretically push the back lash a little tighter as big tires and lots of load will push the gears apart again in a way they never saw in there previous life. But most will not be able to judge how much more so as it was will be fine.

Totally agree with this. Many people set them up super tight. An old dude at a diff shop who showed me how to setup my first Lock Right, stressed return it to how it was, as long as it's within spec. That auto locker in the front of that HiLux, was awesome. Never really knew it was there, but wow the benefits off-road were huge.

With the right drivetrain you can power through spools. I've done it in a 1 ton Blazer, but with these little things, they just want to go straight. Former, selectable in the rear is key. My current build for the Samurai for will have a spool front and detroit rear

Same. I had that problem as well. Short wheel base and locker cutting in and out made for some interesting driving in corners. I needed one steering input for accelerating through a corner and another for coasting or braking through a corner. And if you had to change from breaking to accelerating mid corner then you had to be quick on the wheel, especially in the wet.
