This is a great system for learning safe lock manipulation. It is based on the manipulation principle created by Harry Miller the inventor of the modern safe lock. In the 1950s he created the company Lockmasters, which at the time was a mail order correspondence course for locksmiths to learn safe lock manipulation. What better person to teach you how to exploit the weaknesses of a lock, but the guy who invented it.

Sparrows is freakin awesome! This is exactly why I love that company! They come up with the coolest ways to separate me from my money.

I bought mine yesterday for my dad, this is extremely cool product from Sparrows. Safe Manipulation has remained off limits for most locksport enthusiast until now. Will hopefully be doing a review when I get it in.

I bought this about a year ago and I have had a great time learning how to decode a safe, I do admit that after using this for a year I have got much better but I don’t see a future as a crook. LOL Great video thank you for sharing.

The relocker is there because the old weak point of many safes was too use a hammer push cam and wheel pack out of the lock via the cam and spindle. Then open. If that technique is now used, and the back plate is broken, the relocker engages keeping the safe locked. Not sure if that made sense in my explanation, but trying to channel my inner MHM :P Cool looking product. Although the dial didn't sound super smooth when you were turning it, I thought I heard scraping and thought I saw friction, it really should be super smooth. Though maybe I was just seeing things and maybe your mic setup is just too good :) I went out an bought a 2nd hand S&G 6730 from ebay to practice on , which wasn't cheap either, so the price in my opinion is rather good actually!.. so long as the quality is there. Love the increments they've come up with, great idea!

I bought one straight away, after Tipene posted the sparrows video. I didn't think to check if LN had reviewed it, but wasn't surprised as Jwrm mentioned that Sparrows had a demo model at lockcon. Great review, cant wait to get my hands on it now. I always need a beginners' kit to help me understand new lock types, and this is exactly what I need to get into safe locks. That is very interesting and cool. It is not something I expect to ever need but for many, this will be fascinating. It is a bit pricey but that can be justified IF that is a good quality lock with good tolerances. Something as good as and as difficult to open as a real lock in the proverbial field.

@@LockNoob Is the lock body actually real steel? The looks of all the lock parts look okay to be used in real safe. Considering that similar S&G lock costs around $80 on ebay and this comes with additional parts + box + well designed materials the pricing seems sensible. I wish it were closer like $80 for this set, though.

Nice video. Seen a couple of videos on this so far but I like your approach of showing the back of it and how the mechanism is working as it works. Great idea.

I'll LET YOU IN ON A SECRET and it's well worth noting. In playing around with my sparrows challenge vault, I FOUND A BACK DOOR COMBINATION. There are two combination to open the lock or any lock I would assume. And the way you get the combination is to reverse Direction starting out clockwise instead of anti-clockwise. Start by adding 2 to the clockwise numbers and subtract 2 from the anti-clockwise numbers, and increase these numbers by 2 every time it fails to open the lock. That will get you in the ballpark, but it's unpredictable. Mine looks like: Clockwise +4, anti-clockwise -4, clockwise +3. But that won't get you in yet. You need to go anti-clockwise until you hear a loud thunk, because the lock is being worked in reverse and the nose is dropping hard. It's harmless to the lock. But when you hear this noise you need to stop and reverse Direction going clockwise until you pull the bolt back. To make this work you've got to play with the positive and negative numbers until you get a working combination. It also helps a great deal to take the lock apart and watch the wheels in motion as you work, you might find it much faster this way. And one last point, if you operate the lock in the reverse direction the gates are a lot louder when the lock is operated in the reverse direction, because the gates are a lot sharper, so they're easier to find and plot on the graph provided by Sparrows challenge lock. Catch you later.

:D if you learn about actual safes with mechanical combination locks, you'll find out that they also *always* have secondary combination that is entered with reversed moves and the numbers a slightly different.

That thing is added to my list now. Clear review. Keep it up with those great videos that you do!

Thank you for the excellent video. It was the perfect balance of explaining the rudiments of safe crackimg from the lock sport perspective, and product demonstration. I had already seen the Challenge Vault on the Sparrows website, was intrigued, but filed it under Later. This video pushed it up a lot closer to Now. I already have a rather significant number of items in my Sparrows shopping cart, because I get a lot of play time from my first three Sparrows orders. Order four will fill in some spaces to expand my abilitoes but probably won't result in as many hours of play. After that, I'm keen to get the Challenge Vault on Sparrows order number five!

Your tutorial is really good. I have a digital push button safe that users a similar mechanism as a backup to open the safe. Some safes use a key as backup but mine uses a triple disk tumbler mechanism like on this safe. The difference is you only have to turn it anti clockwise many many times and eventually all the disks line up and a hook drops into a slot on the disks and drops the pin on the solenoid allowing the bolts to retract.

Think you figured it out, but the re-locker only activates when the back of the lock is either remove or broken off in an attempt at forcing the lock to open by pushing the dial shaft thru . That half of the lock cover is designed to break off when forced and has no screws.

Thanx for the review. I also saw the sparrows video on there channel. What first got me interested in this are the several S&G 8088 Padlocks I have without a combination. On the 8088 Padlock, it's three wheels in the pack, and the 4th disk that allows the shackle to open. Because of the padlock design, graphing won't work from the shackle, but I have seen a video (in Spanish and I don't speak Spanish) of a shim method to read the wheels from the closed change key port. Watching this, I think I might be able to graph the Padlock if I can get the shim in. Great Video. I will send it to the Kids as a Christmas gift idea.

@@targuscinco I'm trying my best to be patient and get the feel. I'm great on these tutorial plastic practice locks with eyes shut! Lol.. but I understand REAL locks are a different level. I've got a few union assa abloy and yale. No further forward. Hear clicking but don't get that magical moment when the core turns. Maybe I need to go back to basics again. I dunno. I'd like to learn to start pinning so I can gradually get the feeling of different security pins. Thanks for your reply. At this stage every little helps!

@@PeterMurphyceltic , sounds like you did actually practice with the transparent locks...that might have been your mistake. One shouldn't spend more than an hour or two on those, just to understand the mechanism: not, practice! As soon as you understand how the locking mechanism works, jump on real locks, and abandon the plastic ones completely. Then you'll improve, with practice, at a "normal" rate.

Nice overview of the set! Thanks for showing it and how the mechanism works. I just received mine today and haven't had a chance to play with it. I'm curious how this compares to the vault I maintain. The fence drops in through gravity and a separate lever is used for the bolts, so there's no cam.

Thanks! It's actually pretty fun. There are some minor build issues with mine (loose screws and metal shavings on change key and levers) but easy enough to fix.

Nice Vid and well explained apart from the slight misunderstanding of the relocker lever purpose already explained by a previous comment - to prevent forced entry. However, it is incorrect to presume that you can start searching for your first number on the third wheel (closest to the camera in your video). In the real world, any of the wheels can show up first as this is dependant on other wheels 'masking' your readings because of various inconsistencies during the manufacture of the wheels and the lever. Still a nice video giving a hint at the world of manipulation of combo safe locks.

Great review! What is the pick you are holding in the video?

I purchased the Sparrow Vault and it appears to be of high quality. The problem I have is the manual is riddled with typographical errors and Sparrow gives you the answer to the vault on the last page of the manual so there's no need to open the package with the safe numbers.

Probably a good thing that wasn't there when I ordered my crimbo pressies from Sparrows a few weeks ago.

Will this teach how to do the small combination locks? Or is there something else I should be looking for? (I barely discovered locksport yesterday from a Facebook ad for this safe cracking item.)

It's definitely tight. So much so that the dial stutters when you turn it slowly. ***IMPORTANT UPDATE*** I changed the combination, and things smoothed out after that. Sparrows packs The Vault VERY well. When you get it, you open a box. Inside, there's some padding material which is packed around another box. You open this second box, and there is a dense foam (several pieces) which are form fit around The Vault itself. When I received mine, the outermost box had several holes and a couple dents where it had obviously been treated VERY roughly by the postal system. The inner box was undamaged. My thoughts are, despite how well Sparrows packs The Vault, the obvious mishandling it endured in transit may have caused something to become misaligned. I contacted Sparrows when I first received and started playing with mine, and they responded quickly, but I had already tried changing the combination and found that seems to have resolved the problem.

I just made an order from sparrows a few days ago. I always search for new thing but I didn't see this. Is it available now?....... Nevermind. It turns out the link you provided takes me right to it. Open my eyes and shut my mouth. Got it!

Short answer. No. The only advantage to this kit is the short and stepped arms on the swap out levers to make learning easier.

I’m having difficulties manipulating the second wheel on my Sparrows safe. I know the principle of what I need to do, but I always get confused when I need to turn passed the third wheel combo to feel my contact points. I’ve looked at a lot of resources (including the National Locksmith Guide to Manipulation), but it isn’t clear about that specific problem. Do you have any tips?

As far as I can see, not really. But also keep in mind that the hinge is exposed and the pin is removable. They mentioned that on their website. I personally wouldn’t keep more than the tools in here, but that’s up to you

Man that dial doesn’t look like it’s a smooth rider 🤷🏼😂😳. I was just thinking getting one. But I think I’ll look for a second hand one(only because I’m a poor picker😂).Cool content. Has me wanting one. Even though it looks a bit stiff. Did ya continue to play around with it? Was it simple to learn? Is it worth it I reckon is what I’m asking. Not that I’d ever come across one in wild. But was it hours of entertainment and learning? Hope this isn’t to many questions. And Ofcource answer anything ya can without upsetting Sparrows😂🤷🏼.

I’m seeing that the initial combinations are very close. The 4 I have seen are all within 3 digits on each of the three numbers.
