Two of the sweetest, humble fellas you could wish for. Genius. Brilliant energy then and even now in their 70’s, producing some of the best, original and unique music. Wonderful.
Have listen to Sparks since I was 13 years old. Now I'm 57 years old and I still listen to Sparks. I feel that they are so talenteds and they still create such good music. Sorry for my English. Eva from Gothenburg Sweden
I love the brilliant audacity of Sparks to go out there and shine with completely oblivious abandon!
This manic stare is priceless
This is why I love KZread...What a great band !
I saw this when it was on Don Kirshner's and went out and bought "Kimono My House" the next day. One of the most underrated bands at this stage of their history.

Of anyone's history, I think
I remember going to see them in 1975 or somewhere around there at the Erlanger theatre,in Philadelphia I made a glow in the dark t shirt with fluorescent tape that said sparks. And I used the flash from the cheap camera I bought to take pictures of the show to illuminate the shirt I made.It was the only time I ever saw sparks live. They rocked out and it was the best concert I ever saw .I even got my feet caught in the seats from standing on them from all of the excitement. SPARKS SHOW WAS UNREAL CONTROLLED CHAOS THAT HAD ME IN SHOCK AND AWE!
Crazy, brilliant, amazing. No one can match Sparks.

Russ studied theater at UCLA. My feeling is that these guys are performance artists working within the vernacular of pop music.
I saw this when it was first broadcast in L.A. in 1974, with a friend of mine. They came out of nowhere, as far as I was concerned! I'd already made it a habit to tape the "In Concert" shows as often as possible since the first broadcast in November 1972. I was absolutely floored by Sparks when I saw them! Understand, most of this retrospective clip show were bands like Eagles, Jim Croce, Seals & Crofts, Spinners, Loggins & Messina and so on. Sparks were SO different, weird, and funny, with awesome rocking songs! I'd just turned 10. My friend and I listened to the tape hundreds of times! We went out and bought the "Kimono My House" the next week! I still have that LP, and I still have the audio tape of this. Being so familiar with the audio, then finally seeing this again after 40 years left me speechless! {I'd forgotten about the confused and disdainful looks on some of these (now 60 or close to it) kids in the audience! Hilarious! I imagine those kids stopped listening to new and challenging music right about then.........}

I saw this when it was first broadcast and at first wondered what the hell was going on. 30 seconds in I was a convert and I still find the Mael brothers' writing and performing some of the most creative music today. Unfortunately most of my friends back then never took the time to apprectate their creativity.

Some of us our Bowie/Sparks fans,; others are Status Quo/Rod Stewart fans. Like you, I/we choose the fun/imaginative groups.
First time I have heard 'Something for the girl with everything' - what a brilliant song.....I'm going under the bonnet......
If not this clip, I saw something similar on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert when I was in high school. Lots of goofballs trying to hit that falsetto sound on Monday morning in homeroom. Great stuff!
I saw that Sparks-Patty Smith Group show in Boston - front row. Loved it!
Talent Is An Asset - was my favorite song, ... and then I heard thirty more favorites! What a great act!
When I saw Sparks on "In Concert" in 1974...more than WOW...the 'seventies had finally produced a very unique band! I STILL love 'em...and I still love "Talent is an Asset."
Went to see Sparks live for the first time a few weeks ago, fell in love and now i'm obsessed, watching videos from when i was one year old, fuck me i've been missing out for 50 years
When I bought Kimono My House and played it for my sister she said "they just get faster and faster!" cracked me up. I loved them then and still do now.
I love the camera cuts to the crowd and back. Yes, the stupefied audience is, in fact, stupefied!
DAMN!!!! THESE GUYS WERE AND STILL ARE WAAAYY AHEAD OF THEIR TIME!!! I LOVE THE CONFUSED LOOKS AT THE BEGINNING!!! GREAT STUFF MAN!!! THIS BAND IS QUICKLY BECOMING ONE OF MY PERSONAL FAVORITES!! They were pretty well known from early 70s till the late 70s with their Goegio Moroder combination, but I lost track of them till mid-90s, when they had a breakthrough with some singles here in the Uk, but I was recently surprised that they had done so many albums, and their recent ones are of high quality.

Just fantastic! Sparks when they were at their peak. Such energy, completely bonkers, gotta love 'em! And they still give us good music today. My Dad was Ringo's chauffer so to see him with my fave band in the world is quite a coo!!!! Brilliant!!

@@crescentfreshbret No he definately wasn't that person although he did get to drive Jimi Hendrix a few times during that period. He always spoke very highly of him too, which was a rare thing on his opinions to quite a few of the celebrities he drove at the time. After leaving Ringo he went on to start his own taxi service in partnership with my mother. She drove some of the Beatles when dad was with Ringo as well. No Zappa though.
Watching this can purge every bit of malignity in any human being. Rocknroll!!
Russell has one of my favorite voices of the seventies and also love the meaning of the lyrics, along with the pictures of themselves on the album covers . Never seen them in concert until 2012 on Utube, they crack me up. LoL...

Absolutely spot on. Proto punk with operatic falsetto vocals and hilarious lyrics. The Ramones were into these guys for sure. Meanwhile "punk rock godfather" garbage by Lou Reed was being pushed by the labels. (Ever heard the stink bomb 45 "City Lights" or the shitheap albums "Rock and Roll Fart" or "The Bells"? Puke!)
Indeed. . Love the confused looks. Can read their minds, " Is this unique and epic or just fucked up ! ? "

Fantastic!
I remember seeing this on television and being captivated by the sound and the beat. When I was in college the next year, a guy on my floor had one of their albums, Indiscreet, and I bought it from him. I've been hooked ever since.
I remember when this was on. And Sparks is incredible here.

Great songs.
Great that this is still around!! We never got to see this stuff in Aust in the Seventies!!
Love them. Looking forward to seeing the documentary that opened last week. Sparks, the Mael brothers, had more influence than I realized on other artists. And no wonder.
That guitar sounds so badass
Thank you. Funny opening.
Keith Moon!!!
You don't have to listen very long before deciding-a truly original act.
sparks still sparkling in 2021......
My First ever concert (for me it was Montreal '74) ..Great stuff !!
I just love Sparks!
Anyone who begins a lyric with 'Zoo time.....' is all right in my book.....
I just noticed the lyrics are a jumbled around when you read them and here this song. crazy band!!
Those audience shots must be edited in from other performances to give Sparks some credibility on television. Note that sometimes the clapping or dancing isn't even with the rhythm of the song that's being played. I think for the most part this audience was completely still from pure shock! This still has the power to shock today.

That was a common thing with DK'sRC - though I didn't notice it when it aired on TV in my teens. A lot of the same stock audience footage and canned applause (often oddly enthusiastic, compared to the accompanying crowd shots) was used across shows - and the same kids-with-drumsticks shot happens twice during this. As you stated, the audience is mostly subdued during the wide room shots - same was true for a Raspberries' set I saw (most of these kids don't look like they'd be into pop-informed rock - more likely into harder, guitar-focused acts). When Kirshner had Kansas (who he had signed to his eponymous label) on, it was obvious (when viewing on here) that they were playing live to an empty theater - not a single shot where the band and the seats can be seen.
Never seen this band before. Art Rock!
