I was born in the Soviet Union In a country that was closed from rock music and quite by chance I got the record Sparks Kimono my House, it completely turned my idea of music upside down. Now I have all the Sparks albums in my collection, I specially flew to London for their Concerts in 2008. Sparks is the golden fund of world rock music. God grant them health and strength to create their own works of art Thank you for being Ron and Russell

Saw this show while sitting on the floor at my grandparents' house in 1974. Warped my little mind. My grandmother thought it was pretty okay too. Sparks was way ahead of their time. Years later you could hear the Sparks influence on pop, especially New Wave and the hiccupy vocals affected by some singers like Dale Bozzio.

@@Themanwhocameback2 , yup, my grandma was a night owl too. And loved whatever pop culture was current. She enjoyed Leo Sayers during his 1973 Pierrot clown concert phase. Our local PBS station was the first in the US to air Monty Python's Flying Circus, and grandmother chuckled along with my little brother and me. But my grandad didn't get any of it. When I was 4 yrs old, my teen-aged sister recorded this concert off the tv (like we used to do regularly) onto a cassette tape with her cheap, plastic yellow Panasonic tape recorder with a Goofy (Disney character) sticker on it. We had that tape for years and wore it out listening to it! This concert is permanently emblazoned on my brain...and it's a great one! Our tape actually had all of the NY Metropolitan-area commercials on it as well...incl a great ad for "Kimono My House" (which could be purchased at King Carroll, thank you very much.) There was a grumpy guy on the commercial who said, indignantly, "SPARKS!? Kimono MY HOUSE!? They gotta be KIDDIN' ME!" I remember my sister Suzy sitting Indian-style on the bed with blue jeans on and playing out all the keyboard parts animatedly on her leg...seems like 15 minutes ago. Anyway, I guess this is where I get my weird musical taste!

Xanaroo216 I was hoping this had that commercial. He turned off the set after a verse of This Town and it had the old TV effect of the screen going black except for a fading white dot in the middle and you hear him stomping away and yelling "GAR-BAHJE! SPARKS? KIMONO MY HOUSE?! TH-THEY GOTTA BE KIDDIN' ME!!!!!" Then a door slams and the screen reads Sparks. Kimono My House. On Island Records and Tapes.

Very well said. Sparks songs and performance are remarkable for their stark contrast in songs (like B.C. - cheerful performance of the song with sad lyrics) and the brothers stage performance. (one rather still pulling faces and the other hyperactive and a little crazy)The variability of melodies and harmonies and often profound lyrics are exeptionally catchy. Simply brilliant.

So glad you have joined the small but dedicated 'Sparks' club! My "come to jesus" moment was actually watching them on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert around 1975. We had no internet then, so "Rock Concert" and "Midnight Special" were the only way to see live music for many of us. It was a difference performance I saw because they did "Get in the Swing" (still one of my faves!) and I loved the song, the lyrics, the weird dynamics between the bouncy happy singer and the keyboard player rolling his eyes! I bought Indiscreet and have never looked back. They have had a few 'dud' albums, but man, what a collection of amazing music. And they are still writing great stuff. Saw them live in Toronto 2 nights ago, and they rock better than ever!!!!

Russell was a very pretty young man, shining like a star, with a very high pitched voice ... And a very strict taciturn young gentleman was watching over him ... That's what I had understood from Sparks' staging at the time and it had really amused me. I had no idea that they were brothers. At that time I was eleven years old ... They are extremely talented musicians, fortunately still present in the world of music ... Always so charming and captivating, maybe more as far as Russel is concerned. Moreover Ron doesn't have to watch over anymore his younger brother anymore, does he. This video is really great, thanks you very much.

Sparks was and still is a favorite band of mine. Been listening for over 46 years. Kimono My House is a great record as it captures Sparks at their best. Sparks found the sound that would define the band in the 1970's on Kimmno My House. The Mael brothers song writing and musical talent was on full display. Sparks wry wit and humor imbued the solid song writing. Sparks is good enough to tackle different musical styles and do them well. Long live the Mael brothers and Sparks!!!

Since Edgar Wright's documentary about them, 'The Sparks Brothers', there have been many comments among reviewers like: "Why didn't I know about this?", "The best band I never knew of", "Where have they been in my life?", "How come I never heard of them before?", "Where have I been, never heard of them before?" etc etc. The tour in the US says it all, thousands of new fans, extended tour in Europe, additional days in England and also additional countries. It's amazing, AND THEY DESERVE IT! Finally they are getting at least half of what they should have had a long time ago. The word about them is still spread, a lot of fans are, to quote Edgar Wright, "missionaries", and compulsory talking about Sparks 😂! After, with mild force, I managed to pull my grown up son to both the documentary (he left the theater with the word "Now I understand why you are so obsessed with them. Some songs were actually really good." That from someone who has been an "anti Sparks person"!) and, after thoroughly explained things that a person having not so much knowledge of neither Sparks nor Leos Carax should know, not to be totally confused, 'Annette'. My son was impressed, also a little bit shaken by the subjects the movie approaches of human nature, how things can trigger the worst in a person, how that affects people around and the effects that causes. I can understand why many people reacted negatively to the movie. They expected a comedy, or at least much more humor, and they had a psychological drama. The first hour is also a little slow, and it's easy to drift in mind, which causes you to miss details you had needed to understand what's coming later. The remaining hour and twenty minutes is fast, and when it ends your brain is like "what happened?". It takes time to analyze, and you should watch it at least twice to sort it out. Adam Driver is phenomenal! The little girl who plays 'Annette', only one scene in the end, Devyn McDowell was only five years old. She pulls up with a scene, more than five minutes, all in one take, singing a duet with Driver, and acting. She slays that scene. They are amazing together, and Devyn is at the same incredible level as Driver. You can find the song on KZread, in two different cuts, choose the 'Annette, unlimited edition'. 'The Cannes edition' is shorted down, the song is cut down. Anyway, I highly recommend both movies, but do a little homework before you see 'Annette', you'll gain a lot.

"Why aren't these guys more famous?" Because they've always been at an angle to whatever the conventional pop music of the era was. This is a great performance by Sparks at their most successful period in the mid 70's. Absolutely huge in the UK but not so in homeland USA. We're treated to some fantastic longer versions than were on the albums. Here in Heaven is especially brilliant with it's different intro, extended guitar & longer ending. BC also has an extra added false ending & Ron's piano solos were lengthened in a couple of tracks. Although we had Sparks on Top Of The Pops here in the UK more or less every two weeks for a couple of years obviously we were unaware of this show so praise be to KZread for finally making these clips available for all to see years later. Thanks for uploading!!

THANKS for posting this precious document! Such a "one of a kind band" of such huge original talent. They are mind boggling. These guys were so underrated and ignored to the point of it being criminal. Talk about proto-punk riffing and sarcastic tongue in cheek lyrics via operatic quality falsetto (I hear some things that became the Ramones in there) and to think at the same time the garbage of Lou Reed was being pushed by corporate media with things like the stinking 45 "City lights" and the rancid albums "Rock and Roll Fart" and "The Bells". (No one.... NO ONE.... remembers "City Lights" stinkeroo 45 cuz NO ONE bought it!) THE SPARKS ARE A MUSICAL TREASURE!!!!

The irony here of course being that acts were forced to play live on Don Kirshner's show (although a very few got away with singing live over a recorded instrumental track) and while the band blew the lid off this place, an "audience track" was added simply because they just don't get the brilliance that is Sparks.

I too had my microphone up to the television set in 1974, always looking for something new and different. Very different and way ahead of their time, Sparks were 2 Americans that sparked the precursor of punk and new wave and were the impetus and the true beginning of the genres in England. Precisely why I never like punk and new wave, because it already had been done by Sparks brilliantly!
