ABOUT ANNETTE
Annette, the much-anticipated new film from LEOS CARAX, is set to open the 74th Cannes Film Festival on 6 July 2021 and will go on general release in France on the same date. Based on an original story and music by Ron and Russell Mael, the brothers behind the flamboyant band SPARKS, ANNETTE began life as an (unreleased) album but was transformed into a musical film after they met Carax. Having successfully maintained a five-decade-long career as one of the world’s most innovative and creative bands, it comes as no surprise that their collaboration with the visionary French director has resulted in a unique piece of film-making. The original soundtrack to ANNETTE, with lyrics co-written by SPARKS and LEOS CARAX and music composed and performed by SPARKS, features vocals from the stars of the film: Adam Driver (Henry), Marion Cotillard (Ann) and Simon Helberg (The Conductor).
About Annette, SPARKS says: “The characters live and breathe through the sensibility, tone, and lyrics of the music. In Annette, we set out to have virtually all the dialogue sung. It was a huge challenge, but one we are extremely proud of.“

LYRICS:
So may we start? (2x)
It’s time to start
High time to start
They hope that it goes the way -it’s supposed to go
There’s fear in them all but they -can’t let it show
They're underprepared but that -may be enough
The budget is large but still -it’s not enough
So may we start? May we start, may we, may we now start? (2x)
It’s time to start - May we start, may we, may we now start?
High time to start - May we start, may we, may we now start?
We’ve fashioned a world, a world -built just for you
A tale of songs and fury -with no taboo
We'll sing and die for you -yes in minor keys
And if you want us to kill too -we may agree
So may we start?
So close all the doors and let’s -begin the show
The exits are clearly marked -thought you should know
The authors are here so let’s -not show disdain
The authors are here and they’re -a little vain
A little vain
Now…
The music resounds and all -the flames are lit
So Ladies and gents please -shut up and sit
The curtain of our eyelids -lazily rise
But where's the stage you wonder
Is it outside, or is it within?
Outside? Within? (2x)
So may we start?

Perhaps this will be one positive outcomes of the pandemic. First people get to know about the documentary, more people get to know about Sparks, more people learn to know and understand their music. Not even the people in charge of the Oscar Academy Awards could miss it, if they don't choose to, of course. It's remarkable how such people can put their heads with eyes and ears deep into the sand when something is outside their normal comfort zone.

@@jayshreejazz 'The Sparks Brothers' by Edgar Wright. Easiest is to google it. Premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January this year (2021), out on theaters in the UK and the USA, will be available all over Europe. The title is what Sparks' was suggested to change their first name, 'Halfnelson' to after their first album didn't sell. It was thought to be a pun on 'The Marx Brothers'. However Sparks didn't like it much, but agreed with just 'SPARKS'. About using 'The Sparks Brothers' as the name of the group they (Ron and Russell) have said multiple times "We hate it". Consider the name of the docy a loving teasing from Edgar Wright, who is a huge fan and friend of theirs.

Far away of Oscars, it's too bizarre for them, besides there's a tendency to nominate films about social issues. And I don't think Amazon will campaing for this movie. Besides Adam Driver has two movies likely to be launch as oscar contenders, so low spectation.

@@JonathanNelsonOfficial Not really... Sparks' story, Sparks' music, Sparks lyrics/text/script whatever you want to call it. Leos Carax has asked for adjustments to make it work before the camera and on the screen. In some occasions he has co-written these adjustments. This story was meant to be Sparks' next album at the time when they wrote it. They had planned to tour with a storytelling show, not exactly a musical, but let the songs tell story alone, not a play. Ron and Russell asked Carax for his opinion on the material, and after thinking about its possibilities he said he was interested in making it a film. That led to a further developing of material, both the already written and additional. All music, maybe some minor exceptions, I can't tell for sure, and the original story, all Sparks. New material and adjustments are made by Sparks, after Carax' wishes and requests. That's where Carax has had his influences on the lyrics. Don't say this is an achievement by ONE person. Without Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks this hadn't been in the first place. I'm NOT saying that all Leos Carax did was strolling around the cameras playing the accordion, no way!! He has done loads of work to put this together ADDITIONAL to directing. I'm not disregarding his part, AT ALL. As your comment applied to disregard Sparks' part in making this film. I think that right should be right, Sparks wrote the original story, lyrics and music. Period. Leos Carax took it from being an music album and a tour. Sparks AND Carax worked out, wrote and re-wrote adjustments. A lot of team work. YOU ARE RIGHT about Leos Carax is a fantastic director and film maker. Absolutely.

There are very few reasons for me to go to the movies. This is one of a few exceptions. Wouldn't be surprised if Sparks get some sort of nomination for their writing or music. A little premature to think that, being the movie isn't even out yet. But I have a feeling this may be one of the year's better films

Usually musicians are finished by the time they're 40. Not Sparks. In their 70s, still routinely make catchy masterpieces.

It's funny, I've loved Crepax's work and was excited for his new film when I saw the trailer a couple weeks ago. Meanwhile, I've known about Sparks without knowing much about Sparks, but because I saw their name in the Annette trailer I decided to watch their documentary and now I'm both a Sparks fan and ten times more excited for Annette as well! I seriously don't get how Sparks flew under/over my radar all of these years. I've always been into experimental /weirdo/ underground music and listening to their discography I've realized so many bands I have known and loved have built their entire careers off of the sound spawned from a single Sparks song. Finding Sparks this late into my life feels like I missed an entire floor in my musical library because the entryway was hidden behind a door that I mistook for a mirror. It's kind of a bummer, but also incredibly exciting and life-affirming to discover such a treasure trove of art and inspiration just when you wondering if the well had run dry.

When this movie-album started, I frowned. Then I got kinda angry, like how presumptuous. Then I started laughing, like from the anger at first, but then into just disbelief at what I was experiencing. My partner asked me, after a bit of that, "like, are you enjoying this? because i'm not sure." And through laughing, I responded, "No! This is terrible! I think?" Five minutes later, I said, "so that was pretty good." Some 45 minutes later, it was, "this is incredible." Now I'm here the next day listening to the music again.

This couldn't be any more 'Sparks-ish', with that thumping operatic pop style that goes back decades, and which always sounds fresh. Ron Mael's influence is all over this.
