El Rocio is a small village in the municipality of Almonte (Huelva), located 15 kilometers from Matalascañas, which is accessed by a path that borders the Doñana National Park, giving this path incomparable views and authentic beauty.
It is an area of ​​small white houses, with a lot of tradition, all of it surrounding the Hermitage of the Virgen del Rocio, where the Blanca Paloma resides, the name given to this Virgin and of which there are thousands of devotees who weekly go to venerate her.
Its unique urban and landscape characteristics make it a unique place to experience the religious fervor towards the "White Dove" and the natural placidity of Doñana. The pilgrimage activity closely linked to the horse has configured the village as an ideal place to practice equestrian activities, becoming the main reference in the region in the organization of equestrian competitions.
During the Romeria del Rocio, more than a million people come to this place in the province of Huelva to venerate the Virgin, giving this village a spectacular color. This religious festival known throughout the Spanish territory can be explored on foot, horseback or in wagons; a route that passes through the Doñana Natural Park to the shrine of the Virgin, which is taken in procession to the village.
The first record we have of this place of worship dates back to the mid-fourteenth century, a cult that has evolved over centuries now becoming an important mass celebration in Andalusia.
