SpaceX Starlink Mesh WiFi Installation and WiFi Scanner App!

Ғылым және технология

Starlink has just released their own mesh wifi extenders and we have two of them to install today! We also test out the new beta of WiFi scanner on the Starlink app.
Update: I just compared the main router and the new mesh nodes and they are the same model numbers, #UTR-211, so it seems they are the same other than the housing color scheme. If you plug in a new router in range of the main one it will see it as a new mesh node. I will do more testing to confirm this and update you all. What I'd like to see is if I can put the Ethernet adapter into one of the mesh nodes and add a hardwired Ethernet port.

Always do a reboot from within the Starlink App on the wifi and the router once a day. That will dramatically help with speeds... Also put the dish into stow mode and then hit un stow once a day and that will also force to dish to find a more preferred satellite which helps the speeds big time. I am in a waitlist area with the RV version and my speeds are always up near 70-100Mb download. Get 2-3 mesh units as well.... Huge difference !! AWESOME!!!

Excellent. Thank you again Shane. Will be setting up the Starlink Mesh Network soon at my rural location. Already have the 2nd generation Starlink Dish and modem/router installed and operational now for several months. Working well. Plan is to remove the Eero extenders and replace with the Starlink beacons./routers. Plan to connect one beacon/router via ethernet to the main router. Have a great day.

Correct, just setup your new wifi router with a unique name and it will happily run along side of the Starlink wifi. The new router needs to have an Ethernet connection to the Starlink router.

Firstly, I’m a fan of Starlink. Now, the demonstration here shows that if you were on a video-call/zoom call that depended on the Starlink internet, the mesh system would have cut (disconnect, drop) the call while walking from the proximity of one node to the next. One possibility is that the system, as seen in this demo, was not really perfectly configured (say, a step was missing, like turn off- turn on the whole watchamacallit). I just bought TP-Link mesh EAP outdoor antennas, but haven’t connect them yet (OK, OK, I couldn’t). At least I know the TP-Link work like a charm, zero drop, insane outdoors coverage. But, if there is a way to have Starlink meshes, I would prefer to have that over mixing brands and lose the glamour of using SpaceX’s satellites.

But I figured what the heck and leave it set up when not traveling and the account is active. I have it mounted on my porch and the primary router is outside there too. The bottom floor of the house got decent wifi from Starlink, but not upstairs. So I bought a Mesh Router and just plugged it in and I get full signal up in my office. I was concerned it might interfere with my existing Mesh system, but apparently not at all.

So basically they didn't add anything. They just updated the software in the normal Router and said "K wanna mesh network. you can buy optional routers that will mesh network the system." But it's the exact same router/modem. So all you're doing it just buying ANOTHER of the stock router/modems as a extender/mesh node. Would've been better if they atleast didn't go the cheap route and made a new Mesh pod system that atleast had 1 ethernet plug on them as standard. Since right now their Ethernet Adapter to the router/modem/mesh nodes are currently hitting a halt right now from what i heard, Since it's so unique.

The mesh routers have the same part number as the main router and also have the same antenna/ethernet adapter port. I haven't tried it yet to see if my Ethernet adapter will work in it but have heard from others that it works. They do not have a built in Ethernet port, same as the main router. You don't necessarily have to use bypass mode to add 3rd party routers and wifi extenders to Starlink. Posting a new video soon on getting "MyQ" products to work through Starlink and for that I had to add another access point and used a cheap TrendNET model for that.

I haven't seen any clues when these mesh routers will be readily available. Starlink emailed me yesterday with a questionnaire about the install process and performance. Seems they are still gathering data. The routers seem fairly weather resistant but I wouldn't place them out in the elements. As long as you protect them from rain and direct sunlight, heat, extreme cold, etc you can mount these wherever you want. Just needs to be close enough to the main router to get a strong enough signal to capture and retransmit.

Each "node", which I include the main router in that definition, has the same signal range. It depends on where you place it in your home, what building materials are used, height of the mounting location, etc. My main router is centrally located in my house and without the mesh nodes I got some signal outside in some areas, not great. If there is a particular area outside you want signal, put the main router closer to that side of the house. The Startlink mesh nodes are pretty cool in that you just plug them in and everything is automatic. With the app open it asks if you want to add the node, click yes and it's done. There are much better 3rd party wifi mesh nodes available for cheaper but you'll have to do more configuration. If you are ok with that, you might prefer 3rd party options.

  • @shanesdiy

Good question, I hadn't tested that yet but just did. I went back and forth letting it connect between the nodes and main controller and doing a speed test. Hard to get a really accurate comparison because back to back tests often jump around even on the same router. In the tests I just did all 3 were within ±20 Mbps of each other download speed, around 100-120 Mbps currently. Upload ranged from 3-9 Mbps between the 3. Ping were all 45-50ms. Those numbers generally go up and down throughout the day but those are typical for me. Didn't seem to make much of a difference if I was on a node or the main router.

Hi Shane, we are just catching up here in Australia and I was curious as to how many meters away from the main router you placed your mesh nodes? the app says 1 to 2 rooms apart, but like you, I have an outdoor security camera and a granny flat 15m from the house that I was thinking of trying a mesh node in?

  • @shanesdiy

    @shanesdiy

    11 ай бұрын

Short answer is that it's hard to say. In my case, I have two nodes. Node 1 I initially tried to install about 15 meters from the main router and it would not connect. It went through 3 walls I think. I had to move it about 3-5 meters closer past 1 wall to get it to connect. My second node is about 17 meters away from the main router the opposite direction and it connects fine. Must be something in the walls, plumbing, electrical, etc. blocking the signal the one way. So how far the node can be from the router is dependent on what the walls are made of and other interference. If your main router is as close to the granny flat as possible you might be able to get a node to connect installed in the granny flat. Another option, the wifi signal to devices seems to go further. I just now went out and did a test. I have one node near a window and I was able to walk outside with direct line of site to that window and I got 50 meters away while facing the window with my cell phone and still had a strong wifi signal. If I turned around with my body blocking the signal at that distance the signal strength dropped and the Starlink app said "low signal strength". So if either the main router, or a node is installed in your main house as close as possible to the granny flat, you might have a decent wifi signal in the granny flat to just use wifi out there without a node in that building. Hope that helps.

I didn’t know if someone could help me with some ideas

If you have the nodes positioned at the outer edge of the main router signal range they will have trouble fully connecting. I had one that I couldn't get to connect and to fix it I had to move it slightly closer to the main router. Once connected you can then try moving around as needed just know that if the signal isn't strong enough the node won't connect.

Not sure exactly what you are referring to. In this video we are going over how to connect the Startlink wifi mesh nodes to the main router which is done through the Startlink app as demonstrated in this video. If you are referring to connecting a 3rd party router access point using the Starlink as the internet connection, you just need to connect the 3rd part router to the main Starlink router via Ethernet cable (with the Ethernet adapter) or you can also do it via WiFi between the Startlink Router and the 3rd party router. The setup of the each specific 3rd party router will vary and you'll have to refer to your routers manual. I have another video which I'll link below where I show how I had to use a 3rd party wifi router to get my garage door internet connection to work since it would not cooperate with the Starlink router. kzread.info/dash/bejne/a41kmpaPadGviZM.html

You can connect devices at the mesh node with an Ethernet adapter. The mesh node will not connect to the main router via hard wire Ethernet, it is wireless only.

Since seeing this post, I do not believe either the main router or the nodes are wifi 6, spec indicated that they are "IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac standards". WiFi 6 is 'ax' if I understand it correctly so none of the Starlink routers or nodes are wifi 6 at this time.

@@shanesdiy We purchased a Starlink set up a few days ago in an attempt to get away from what we think is called "Throttling". We pay for 20 Mbs but over time only get 3mbs. We have two internet providers. We pay almost $140/mo. One serves my home/office and the other serves my sign shop and rental. Watching your video, I hoped would show me how to daisy chain Starlink extenders. While watching you talk about Starlink on your front porch, I recognized the mountain reflection in the windows as identical to when you did your distance and orientation tests from the front yard. Suddenly I realized it's the other you! ;-) (I'm not a stalker. LOL, just wanted to confirm your comment that people can tell a lot of about another from a video!) @@Navigator777777 Someone in the comments below claimed that they successfully daisy chained Router -> Mesh 1 -> Mesh 2 so it might work for you. There are 3rd party devices that might do a better job and avoid possible signal degradation from daisy chaining like that. I have a recent video of a long range WiFi extender that will go over a mile. You don't likely need to go that far but even if you only need to go 100 yards it could be a great option.

I am not buying Starlink OVERPRICED EQUIPMENT to fix WIFI dead spots in my house I have a 4200 Square foot house. Do you know how much that would cost me? The Routers are $145 bucks a pop and they recommend 3 per installation. That is insanity because it would not be sufficient coverage for my home. So what I did was I bought the Ethernet adapter and a patch panel. Ran a cable into my attic. Then I put a switch and ran Cat 6E cables to all of my TV's so I can stream from all of them because they are all smart TV's with built in Ethernet. Then I ran a cable to the two desktop PC's and put the two laptops on WIFI. WIth a High end Gaming Router The Very best Router that I could Find to serve the wifi and a Range Extender. After that I connect Starlink to the WAN port on the router and the included router only serves as a power device nothing else. Everything is working perfectly and no signal degradation.
