    Don't know how many of these dust ball planets I've been to, but you know it's a series of bad decisions that leads to each one of them. They start with terraformers doing a half-assed job, selling the world off to a colony corp as soon as the atmo is deemed "breathable". Then the colony corp signs desperate earthers with no better prospects to settle the place, one stop shop, everything you need at one low price. The corp sends along cheap pre-packaged kits of seed stock; some might grow, but most won't. No guarantees live stock will survive either. Half a generation later, instead of half-starved earthers living on the dole, they're half-starved dirt farmers living in hard scrabble villages, each fighting against their neighbors for whatever wilting crops dare to poke their heads above alien soil. Eventually, the feuding gets so bad one of those villages will decide to scrape together whatever coins they have between them, and hire a sheriff. That's where I come in...

    Here's how it is: The Earth got used up, so we moved out and terraformed a whole new galaxy of Earths. Some rich and flush with the new technologies, some not so much. The Central Planets, thems formed the Alliance, waged war to bring everyone under their rule; a few idiots tried to fight it, among them myself. I'm Malcolm Reynolds, captain of Serenity. She's a transport ship; Firefly class. Got a good crew: fighters, pilot, mechanic. We even picked up a preacher for some reason, and a bona fide companion. There's a doctor, too, took his genius sister outta some Alliance camp, so they're keepin' a low profile. You understand. You got a job, we can do it, don't much care what it is.

    @levilukeskytrekker

    @@SpaceBanjoMusic I have been prepping more of an almost steampunk fantasy one, although instead of steam or coal, the tech is based on a form of magic called Animancy, where living metal vehicles with animal-like characteristics (e.g. shiny snake strain) are animated using power forged from memories. The main actual plot thrust was gonna be around Monsterhearts, which are these kinda jewel-like globules that power constructed monsters who roam the wilderness and beset the nations that use Animancy. It'd start with a basic monster hunt merc job via a faction of monster-hunting mercenaries (the "Hearthounds") and proceed from there in a more sandbox fashion. All that being said, I am famously fickle when it comes to stuff I write, and I've already started putting down general ideas for a space cowboy campaign, hahaha. I've had the idea of gunslinger wizards doing quickdraw duels with wands for a long time, and I'll probably throw in potion-bottle pistols. Obviously, the spaceships would be flying trains.

I'm still not sure why I'd send it to both of them...but there it is. Both would like it. I'm trying to figure out a sci-fi/fantasy angle for a tune like 'June Apple'. Some parts of this one are along those lines. I play mainly Irish dance music, the accompaniment for which is rock-based, and I dig tunes like June Apple. In the desolate aftermath of the nuclear fallout, life had become a merciless game of survival. Among the ruins and radiation-soaked wastes, one figure stood out: a lone bounty hunter, his name forgotten, known only by the whispered tales of those who dared cross his path. Two centuries had passed since the world was consumed by radiation, and yet, amidst the crumbling remnants of civilization, the bounty hunter still roamed. His latest target, a ghoul known only as X-33, had eluded him for days, leaving behind a trail of mystery. Following the faint traces, the bounty hunter arrived at a small ruin nestled in the heart of the Mojave Desert. But instead of the eerie silence he had grown accustomed to, the air was thick with the sound of gunfire. Instinctively, the bounty hunter hesitated. In a world where every bullet counted, he preferred to avoid unnecessary conflict. But as he watched the chaos unfold, a nagging feeling tugged at his conscience, urging him to intervene. With calculated precision, he joined the fray, his shots finding their mark with deadly accuracy. The scavengers, taken by surprise, soon fell before his relentless onslaught. Yet amidst the carnage, the bounty hunter's gaze fell upon a figure, hunched and wounded, unmistakably X-33. Approaching his quarry cautiously, the bounty hunter knelt beside the ghoul, his eyes narrowing as he beheld the sight before him. X-33 was gravely injured, his breathing shallow and labored, but in his sunken eyes flickered a spark of defiance. In a voice barely above a whisper, X-33 uttered his final words, a cryptic revelation that sent shivers down the bounty hunter's spine. He spoke of secrets buried deep within the bowels of The Vault, secrets that threatened to unravel the very fabric of their world. For a moment, the bounty hunter was torn. The allure of the bounty beckoned, promising riches beyond measure. But beneath the veneer of wealth lay a darker truth, a truth that X-33 had dared to uncover. And as he set out once more into the unforgiving wasteland, he turn on the banjo song from his PipBoy, he knew that his journey had only just begun.

    Then there is silence. The birds wait quietly in the uppermost branches of the pines and oaks as a fat old possum waddles away quickly. Squirrels bark alarms as whitetail deer run silently away through the brush down by the river. The snap of a twig. The Chinese paratrooper turns around quickly. He's alone and don't like it all. The strong winds had carried him over the top of a mountain peak. He was a good two miles away from his comrads. The clicking sound of a shotgun hammer being pulled back by a gnarled hand of an old mountain woman. Long gray wisps of hair blow back from a wrinkled face. Pale gray eyes narrow as the singleshot shotgun is shouldered and aimed. An arthritic finger tightens on the trigger. "This time you ain’t gettin' away." Her snarled whisper was the last words he ever heard. The birds flew and the whitetail deer snorted. There was killing work on the mountain top today. Get away! Get away! The squirrels barked their alarm then hid themselves. On the other side of the mountain a skirmish sounded. A running gunfight. Automatic weapons fire. Shotgun blasts. Snares meant to trap a man were sprung. No where to run or hide. Killing work. Sharp knives were unsheathed and drank blood greedily. Took less than an hour. Mountain folks know how to take care of their own. Don't need no he'p from duh guvment a' tall, they would proudly claim.

    We - humans, that is - have been amongst the stars for enough generations, that we've forgotten our origin. Oh, we all know and believe what the science says that we all came from the same place, the same planet. Which is quite a concept to wrap our heads around! Just thunk it! All of us! What was the last count? Several hundreds of trillions of us, scattered every which way, all hither and yon, all from the same planet! However, there is just so many stories of where we're from. Which one is true? Ha! I will admit, that little bit about a planet that is blue and green seen from a distance seems to be held true all amongst them stories that I've heard. There seems one...I don't know what word to use. It's a thing. An actual physical thing, I have heard it, I have seen it used with my own eyes. Not sure if it's a tool, a weapon, an instrument or what ever. It cut real dep into me, it spoke to me one such a level, that it's like I remembered on the same level that I know how to breath, or how to blink my eyes. It spoke to my bones, it sang to my genes. At one end, round, somewhat larger than a dish to bake an apple pie in, then off to one side a long handle that's perhaps longer from my elbow to the tips of my fingers. One man strummed strings stretched along the length, using his fingers of both hands. Then another started. There were two of them. It seemed to me, not in resonance, certainly not in harmony but more... I don't know... As though they were duelling
