The correct way to play this game is to build a cockpit out of couch cushions and bed sheets.

When i was a kid i used an old refrigerator box with my little 13 inch tv set in a cut out. Even had my own pilots chair made from old lawn furniture 😎🤘

I seemed to have issues trying to do the deorbit the "proper" way (and others also did). The proper way was to turn the Shuttle around backwards and fire the OMS engines to deorbit. The game was to slow in the rotation and it was almost impossible to get back forward before entry interface. What I did was just use the RCS to slow down, you didn't have to turn around backwards for that. Worked everytime. There was a story in a gaming mag about this a year or so after release and NASA chimed in saying that this was an actual backup procedure for the real Shuttle if the OMS system failed.

This video game was also brand new to me, especially when it's about the early age of space exploration.

"Early age of exploration" ? This game came out like 22 years after the first man in space happened (USSR). I get it though. (Atari 1983). I admit, that it's been 43 years now after the shuttles and this game :) Find a copy if you can, I bought it new and at the time was a very good game. After completing the missions, you can send a photo (from the TV) to receive a Atari Space Shuttle pilot patch. Too bad this game can;t be emulated for the PC.

@VideoGamesRevisited Yeah, you control the launch with the switches, but in space with the joystick. And I found it on rombay.

This game actually used the STS-1 timing for everything (Main Engine start at 4 secs instead of the later T-6secs) and liftoff at T+3 Secs rather than right at 0

I remember that picture and description of the game programmer in the manual! I don't even know why, but I loved this game. I played on the hard difficulty. Don't think I ever made Commander but could get Pilot ok. Those satellites were a bitch to dock with after about 4 times. Ran out of fuel trying many times! Remember the insert that went on top of the console? I lost it after awhile but could still do it without it. Not a bad game considering how primative the tech was back then!

I think my copy of this game was bugged. I always got an Abort: Error 4000 after landing, no matter what I did. That means my landing gear wasn't down on touchdown, which was BS - I made sure to raise and drop it on time, every time, and all my console switches worked fine. Was that a common flaw with the cart, or just my copy?

I can't remember what some of the switched did in the game. Maybe landing gear was one? The goal was to keep the flashing white dots in the centers of the drawn pathways. I see in the video some dots were way out of where they should be. Great game though, I bought it new. I have a patch ATARI sent me when you complete the missions. I think there were 3 possible patches you could get.

Your white dots on the s displays had to be within the path displayed. If they were out, you may have been too fast or not on the right glidepath. Look in this video you can see the white dots way out of their range.
