Space Plants - How Are They Adapting?

Studies on the International Space Station have found that root growth is similar as it is on Earth but the way the plants express their genes has been altered. Learn more about it on the latest installment of the Science@NASA video series.

That actually not that crazy. If that is future, then it's a future far into the future, and we already have a pretty big wall to face that is called global warming. So it's not that surprising that people don't care much about this.

Thank you for the video that was what i wondered about plants. Its interesting that they actually don’t need gravity to determine their root positions 😱 it’s all about where the nutrition is 👍🏼

Astroponics is an incredibly important issue in manned spaceflight. The art and science of growing plants is incredibly important and not just for food and oxygen processing but for industrial supplies as well. The further we explore into space the more expensive it is to ship supplies those great distance. It is far more efficient to send seeds and young plants to those far locations growing the resources in situ then to ship the finished supplies all the way from Earth.

I always reasoned plants grew towards the source of light. What happens if you rotate the light source (as in a cupboard) in my experience the plant moves, but what about the initial shoot, before the seed leaves appear, will it adapt? Or will it die?

how exactly do they water the plants? It appears the dirt is enclosed, does that mean they have to make all of the dirt reasonably damp in order for the plant to get it's moister? Of course, the roots could seek out the water anyway and not have to worry too much about how evenly the dirt is soaked. Man, there have been multiple times, like this one, I wish I had a scientist friend whom I could ask these minor questions to.

I think u can inject water and pressure feed the soil through a tube or something. And the water will be evaporating, also the roots will moving towards where the water is anyways.

If only there was a way to capture the energy from sun UV and then mix it in a soil with different beneficial bacteria that the specific plant you are growing would need.. it may be possible to grow plants with 0 light or maybe even water… it’s all about the soil and what we put in it to grow the plant… plants can do amazing things because they work like us. They only need elements to survive.. if all those key beneficial elements are there, doesn’t matter how they get there. The plant will grow… I’ll never have the chance to work in a field that has to do with space exploration, unless it’s something that is eventually opened to the general public… but man it’s cool to give the rest of you ideas to maybe use someday… This is all theory

There is not enough sunlight and heat on Mars for plants like strawberries, lettuce and tomatoes to mature, even in greenhouses. May take two to tree times longer for plants to flower on Mars. Unless you can find a lot of fissile material there.

Oh man the possibilities are endless… as the population grows some people feel choked and suffocated by mass population. Some of us would rather be living a simple life, growing, collecting and discovering new minerals, even bacteria… if I could take my self and whoever else wanted to come with me, go to another planet, have a way to grow, cultivate and do scientific testing and then send all this back to earth to help the society here on earth with technological advancement…I AM DOWN… the only issue is… The technology isn’t there yet… :/

would we cool if everything could just come toghether in a perfect recyclign process. We eat plants and drink water and then go to the toilet, then some cool equipment takes care of our waste and turns it into drinkable water and plant fertilizer so that we can grow new plants (both for food and oxygen) Combine that with solar energy and I that's an almost perfect setup with very little waste. Also seems like one of the first things you want to have sorted out if you plan to build a base on Mars. Perhaps you also want fusion power :)
