Space Engineers Tutorial: Large Ship Design Part 2 (Survival design tutorial series)

Ойындар

This is part 2 of the Space Engineers large ship design tutorial. We take the ship from its internals and start adding some armour flair to it.
During the video I mention a design that I particularly like. I've used Jura7's designs in my machinima series (with his kind permission) because they manage to take the blocks of Space Engineers and make something that looks sleek. Here's the link to his workshop page for the Leviathan: steamcommunity.com/sharedfile...
If you're looking for the workshop link to the completed ship, here it is:
steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles...
You can also find the first attempt at a similar design on my workshop, seriously though, it's a little bit... let's use rough as ugly seems mean.
If you have any tutorial topics you'd like me to cover in the coming videos please let me know in the comments. If you've got burning questions about how to do something, ask here and I'll do my best to answer or try in the official keen discord as you'll find the community pretty friendly when you're asking for help with something.
As always, don't forget to enjoy this awesome (if at times buggy) game!

    I have an interesting challenge for you! Try building a "junker" style ship, straight out of the scrapyard. What i mean is the exact opposite of a whole looking ship, with mangled armor, patched up hull, missing pieces and improvised structural supports. Making it look like a ship that was put together in a rush. Or meaby a station in the same style? What ever floats your boat. That would be a project i'd love to watch for hours without end.

    I like to color code parts as I build so I can quickly identify each set of systems. My color code is generally: Atomic Green - Power Systems Fire Engine Red - Hazardous elements like hydrogen tanks and warheads Ice Blue - Oxygen Systems Blaze Orange - Cargo Containers Yellow - Conveyor Systems (sharing multiple systems) White - Computer and Sensory Systems Black - Weapon Systems Color coding is excellent when you are snaking closed circuit systems parallel to each other, needing to mark an armor block to signify a hidden conveyor access point that you may later expand upon, marking button panels for quick identification of what system they're linked to, as well as quickly locating valuable parts of wreckage like intact cargo containers or reactors. It also makes navigation in larger ships easier, as you can color code the interior to reflect the systems that section entails. I'll often make the interior a few shades lighter or darker than any exposed systems. The exterior will always end up being colored for pure aesthetics, though I try to keep exposed color coded systems their coded color if the design permits it. I would definitely recommend at least color coding your conveyor system, as well as any armor on the interior that is placed on conveyor access panels. I actually opt to just slap on an air tight conveyor instead of armor and color code it to the system it's connected to. It's a method that works pretty well for keeping track of many systems in larger builds. :)

    I like to build all sorts of people spaces into really large ships and bases, like a galley/mess hall and crew quarters, things like that. Though to do those you might want to look at some of Eikester's decoration mods as they'll make those spaces much nicer. Other things you can do is, make you reactor rooms stylish, there was a pretty cool design on reddit recently for a hyperdrive chamber that's excessively large but seriously cool: www.reddit.com/r/spaceengineers/comments/6y6ekt/the_hyperdrive_chamber/ If you want to go with purely functional, then you can always build in redundancy to your power systems and build ridiculous jump drives on so you can jump crazy distances, or expand any industrial processing facilities so you can build even bigger in the future :)

    since its almost a landable base i wanted to put the jump drive module in space and i could detach from it maybe better to put ion thrusters to get better durability in space. even if i already have 4 large hydrogen thrusters for up and foward thrust. il send the blueprint once i have made my hangar larger

  • @Splitsie

    @Splitsie

    Yeah, it's definitely harder designing in survival because of that, over time you'll get more comfortable with what the blocks will look like and you'll be able to lay down more before building it.

    Very Nice. I have not heard you mention thrust requirements being taken into consideration throughout your build so far. Do you know how many thrusters you need to even pick this thing up, let alone get into space? Or do you just wing it? I recently spent a fair bit of time building what I thought was a great ship to launch into space, only to discover I couldn't even get it off the build platform.

  • @Splitsie

    @Splitsie

    7 жыл бұрын

    I'd love to be able to tell you that I worked it out, but to be honest I did wing it. These days I have a bit of a feel for it but I normally try to build in space for adding extra thrusters if I stuff up, - which happens reasonably frequently :P I plan to do a bit of a thruster experiment to help estimate how many you'll need but I'm still working on ideas of how to best illustrate that in a way that would help with designing a ship.

  • @tassie7325

    @tassie7325

    I have seen and understand the formula for calculating how much thrust is required based upon the weight of your ship. But that is where I get stumped. I thought that looking in the info sheet of the K menu, that the Mass provided the weight. But there are two problems with this that I can see. Firstly, the Mass seems to include the entire grid that you are building on. In space that may be OK if you are building a free floating ship. But on a planet, its an entirely different ball game. Also, it appears that Mass and Weight do not equate. From what I have seen so far, it appears that the only way you can find the weight of a ship is in the Cockpit HUD once the ship has lifted of the base, which seems a bit dumb because you can't calculate the required thrust until you have taken off. Any video on working out how many thrusters are required in a build would be greatly appreciated.

  • @Splitsie

    @Splitsie

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, it's a bit rough working it all out on planet. My current idea for it is to build a rig to show how many thrusters it takes of each type for certain core blocks and then how many armour blocks you can lift with each. It might help with visualising the approximate weight of your ship. I'd be doing this testing in 1G so that it should be relatively easy to adjust it to lower or higher G environments. My plan with the series at the moment, is to finish this little miniseries, do a lighting tutorial then the thrusters after that (need time to build and test the rig). I've also got plans for showing how to build some welding and grinding ships :)

    Mick, working out the weight of the ship isn't so difficult. It's equal to the mass multiplied by the the gravity present, so on earth-like planets with 1G it is mass multiplied by 9.8 (I'm very tired, someone correct me if I fluffed that up)

    awesome series ive been playing Space engineers for a long time now and still have trouble with ship design always end up with either a flying brick that either can only fly in only atmosphere or only in space or a ship so heavy i cant get it to fly at all or it runs out of hydrogen before being able to escape a planet, anyways great videos its given me a few ideas to try as im trying to design a drop ship that can take cargo a couple small ships and several passengers on and off a planet to dock with or land in a larger space station or larger ship for travel between planets, anyways just earned a new sub :)

    I'm really pleased these have helped :) There are definitely better designers than me out there, but hopefully these can be a springboard to those sorts of designs for you. It's awesome that you've got a purpose in mind for the ship as I think that makes it easier to get a cool looking design (or at least I find it helps). The first question I'd ask myself for a design like you're talking about is: do I want an internal hangar or landing pads, or something else entirely for the little ships to dock onto... that'd probably be the biggest part of the ship

  • @macgabhann1108

    @macgabhann1108

    good point so probably best to start with the hangar first I am planing on doing an air tight hangar though it seem no matter how i plan it it ends up way bigger then anticipated and heavy though i did find a website yesterday www.ratuska.fi/se/thruster.php that helps to determine how many thrusters are needed for the weight of the ship so ill probably play around with that as well and see if i can finally get a ship that can travel in both atmosphere and space while still doing what I want and not look like a brick lol.

  • @Splitsie

    @Splitsie

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, airtight hangars are often enormous. It could be interesting to make it as tight around one ship as possible and have multiple hangars if that allows you to make it smaller. I think your set up here could be improved by: 1) painting a grid on your platform. A big cross i the middle, squares of different colours running from there. That way you will see where you are on you ship building at a glance rather than counting bricks all the time. 2) Construction gantries; even if they are static rather than moving they should help you build without using so much jet pack fuel. 3) A big welding/ grinding arm tied into you base storage will enable you to build much fastr without the use of a dedicated construction ship. Give its own cockpit and camera and you are there.

  • @Splitsie

    @Splitsie

    6 жыл бұрын

    The grid is actually a pretty good idea to help maintain symmetry and measurements :) I don't mind using the hydrogen since ice is so easy to come by, but that's a personal preference I think gantry's would be cool to use more for the challenge of constructing them well. I'm too worried about clang with using a welding arm because you'd need a mix of pistons and rotors to get it into the right position - that combination terrifies me :O

  • @antonymash9586

    @antonymash9586

    6 жыл бұрын

    If not an arm then maybe a boom with multiple welders. Two pistons on either end for height and a piston track on either side of the construction bay. That way you could build up your ship layer by layer like some kind of futuristic 3D printer ship yard. Or you could put the ship on a turn table so you move your welder on pistons and turn your ship this way and that to get it in and out. I do think that the arm would be a worthwhile cosmetic project at least. Anyway I am just getting into Space engineers and your series is a big help. I was kind of expecting a cross between Kerbal space project and from the depths but it really isn't like that. Shalower in someways but deeper than others I was expecting.

  • @Splitsie

    It wasn't overkill until quite recently. I prefer to have lots of fuel since I have a bad habit of not noticing when it's low and then being adrift with no means to stop or move. Since a recent update they've dramatically reduced the fuel requirements for thrusters so it'll all be about how long you want to be able to fly before refuelling

    i...may have some problems with the ship i worked for 3 weeks building it T.T ion engines work just with power right? can they be used to fly in atmosphere too? i'm in survival on an earthlike planet, i will need to leave the planet with the ship with hydrogen thrusters, land on a moon and search for platinum. It'll be a 1 shot trip

  • @Splitsie

    Ion thrusters have massively reduced thrust output in atmosphere, so on earth/mars/alien/europa/titan they'll be less effective than in space/moon regions. It's why for landing on those planets you'll normally require hydrogen thrusters too

  • @Splitsie

    The hydrogen tanks take a LOT of ice to fill. Check the tanks in the control panel and in the lower right of the screen you should see a % filled, if your ice gets into the O2 gen, then you should see this increase gradually with each load assuming you also have power for the generator to function

    I know this is an old video so i don't know if i'll get a response however, I followed your videos for this large ship tutorial to the letter and when you put the angled blocked on at 4:35, for me, the one on the refinery and the conveyor tube won't place like it did for you. Am I doing something wrong or did the game update to prevent that?

  • @Splitsie

    @Splitsie

    It's possible they removed the attachment points at the bottom of the refinery which would have been holding that block in place. To give that block a new spot to connect to, the corner conveyor near it could be replaced with an armoured conveyor which would then allow it to connect to something :)

    With so much extra space in the interior, you probably could have built an airlock with a drop down floor using pistons instead of having a big stationary ramp hanging off the front of the ship all the time. Then you wouldn't have to worry so much about breaking off your ramp on a less than perfect landing too.

  • @Splitsie

    @Splitsie

    3 жыл бұрын

    Nope, pistons would have been a bad idea, pistons/rotors/hinges on anything that's intended to fly near planets leads to a frustrating drift because the game doesn't calculate the mass of the subgrids attached to those blocks properly so hovering becomes an exercise in frustration - not to mention docking to something :(

    @@Splitsie Oh, really?!?! Good to know!!! That kinda sucks, though. Really leaves you with no other option but a permanent, stationary ramp unless you want to deal with those consequences, huh? Hopefully they will fix that issue at some point? I'm sure lots of people would really rather have boarding ramps that close up or elevator type airlocks and such. Чтобы корабли,вездеходы и дроны не были кирпичом или уродливым нагромождением блоков строить корабль надо по слоям как сандвич.Ты правильно показал что надо начинать с установки оборудования корабля а затем строить вокруг систем корабля его корпус.Есть видео в самой игре где команду синих разбивает армада красных кораблей и синие убегают на луну и строят боевые корабли там, в одном из фрагментов видно как они строят фрегат по слоям добавляя систему за системой снизу вверх и потом улетают чтобы отомстить красным.Когда строишь корабль по слоям ты прячешь важное оборудование внутри глубоко под бронёй и дублируешь все системы зеркально что даже при потере части корабля он мог летать и вести бой.Я не говорю про мирное выживание где нет врагов нпс или людей на сервере.В мирной игре можно только строить в креативе что то отрабатывая технологии и доводить чертежи до совершенства.А когда играешь в выживании в одиночной игре или на сервере то там самое главное это выживать и воевать.Простой сбор ресурсов и сварка кораблей быстро надоедают а вот война с другими фракциями типа космических пиратов и им подобных не надоест никогда.Как показала практика на сервере строить "кирпич" корабль нельзя потому что ограничено количество блоков как и в одиночной игре и если его превысить то будут разные глюки и ошибки,игра не любит перегрузку её возможностей в плане выполнения скриптов или наличие большого числа кораблей и баз.Это слишком тяжело даже для очень мощных серверов с новейшей аппаратной частью.Главное чтобы корабли были не дорогие, удобные в использовании и могли выдерживать какое то время средний урон от ракет и пулемётов чтобы уйти в варп прыжок или дать отпор врагам.Отличие грузового корабля от боевого очень большое,и по этому выгодно делать два корабля, один добывает и перевозит ресурсы а другой защищает грузовик или корабль шахтёр от нападения,либо создать дрона ассистента который будет защищать транспортный корабль но там надо уже программировать бота своего скриптами и грамотно всё настроить чтобы он сам не стал причиной аварии.Сейчас делать летающие кирпичи из тяжёлой брони стало не выгодно потому что много где игроки использую самонаводящиеся торпеды и ракеты и сабгриды когда на большом корабле стоит турель из малых блоков например супер турель из малых пулемётов гатлинга.От таких опасностей спасает только корабли прикрытия и возможность быстро улететь подальше.

I've been to space, i cannot find it in Asteroids, I seem to only find them as loot from NPCs which is extremely limiting. A response would be appreciated as you can probably imagine, watching your videos and not being able to build your ships or examples is extremely frustrating. Thank you

  • @Splitsie

    @Splitsie

    4 жыл бұрын

    I get you're frustrated but you might have avoided a lot of it by reading the other comments on these very old tutorials, they're from a time when the game had uranium everywhere. I have since made newer tutorials (though didn't replace this one yet) that are linked at the top of my channel page that have been made in the time since uranium was removed from the Earth like planet (and all the other ones too). In all the ships I've built with reactors you can simply replace the reactor with a battery and everything will still work though you'll need to charge the ship from an external source. Uranium is in asteroids in the vanilla game but as it's pot luck you can end up stuck searching through a LOT of asteroids before you find it even if you're using a large grid ore detector, sounds like you've just had bad luck.
