    If you want to save on some blocks, make it so when the lift pistons retract, a grinder cuts out the three blocks under it, aka the two merge blocks, and the connector. As they are only three blocks, but when made over a huge distance, such as 21,000 block tall structure, you will save a little more than 5,700 blocks over 21km of height. (21,000/11*3) aka (Target Height/Height Of Segments*Blocks Removable)

    My problem is that the game allows you to build infinite amounts of block, but after a certain lenght the “rod” won’t have collisions, only ghost blocks, you can get around this, by starting a new a segment that attaches via connector every once in a while, this could be achievied by a timer that activates after a looooong delay, that turns on two other projectors, one witch welds the connector at the end, and one witch builds the new segment, after that an arm puts in place, but very important the new segment locks by both a connector and merge block, but the merge block is disconnected afterwards (so the new segment is a station too) but the setting that keeps stations as stations after disconnecting MUST BE TURNED ON

    3:40 couldn't you just swap places of connector block and merge block and solve connectivity problem? Second merge block up top seems redundant too. Maybe you could just put connector and merge block on top and then move from one section of pillar to another directly? This would require two sections to be built manually though.

    Actually I'm grinding my merge and connector blocks as I build. They sit underneath the entire setup, so the mats for those pieces are constantly being shuffled between welders and grinders....100% green, lol. This uses A LOT less components, as merge blocks and especially connectors use much much more material than conveyor tubes. It also will make a huge difference in the center of mass, albiet my much lighter version may be getting its wobble problems partially from this - My tower of only tubes and conveyors has a further distance between the tower's center of mass and that of the builder, which will cause more wobble when merging.

    This has a lot of flaws and a lot of advantages. The pros of the build are the exploit of the instant travel of materials using conveyor systems and them going from the surface of the planet to space. The major cons, however, are the fact that it is unstable at times and un-efficient if you think about it. An enemy can just shoot down one of the ports and the whole grid could come tumbling back to the planet and not only destroy the base of the elevator but the whole pipe which would set the faction that built it a lot. The way that shapes, like the conveyor pipe, work in space engineers is that they literally carve the voxels block by block at insane speeds sometimes. That would turn it into a deadly weapon to the structure underneath it. It would be useful if you were playing as one whole faction and without wars, but if it were to be in a massively multiplayer scenario with ongoing battles, it would make that target number one. Space elevators don't work that well in the game, especially because of the physics if you break it and it all comes back down to the planet. It would be an expensive and risky project, but It's justified that the faction that builds it wouldn't have to waste time going from space to the surface to transport resources to their space station and such, thus even if destroyed it could have saved the faction some power. Perhaps if it could be guarded better it might reduce the risk but raise the loss if destroyed. The build is a risky one; it can either cripple the faction or run them to success, although the cripple part would be rare since to build one of these pipes systems would cost a lot of resources. If the faction is able to get that much material to build the pipeline, they would probably be a strong faction. This can be a very powerful infrastructural tool if used and built correctly. Imagine having your ground crew mine the ice lake out and just haul the ice to the elevator and in a couple of minutes 8 million tons of ice are in orbit ready to be put to whatever the faction needs. This tool when used correctly will bring the faction to the top, probably. If the faction makes it, the pipe can remove their need to waste energy launching ships from surface to space and back down. This could save the faction the wasted time on those operations and focus it onto something else, say exploration. If someone decides to build this in a server with wars that can happen, they should probably focus more resources into reinforcing it and defense.

  • @DragonNationGaming

    @DragonNationGaming

    5 жыл бұрын

    A couple of things. I am playing in a single player world so I don't have to worry about factions. I'm just building cool stuff for fun. The tether doesn't require a faction. I'm a single player and already have enough to build the tether to space 10 times at least. Defending it in multiplayer would be almost impossible. It would be better to just build ships. Another thing, keep the messages short. I hate reading lol

  • @mikewiththebluecar

    There’s an easier way to get materials from a planet into space if it’s a planet with low gravity. You would have to use the build & repair mod tho. I haven’t tried it on earth but I’ve done it on another planet that had low gravity. This would definitely work on the moon but you can build a connector spitting out the resources you want to send into space then build a tower with gravity generators stacked on it that will propel those resources up and into space then on your ship or station in space you can use build & repair to collect the resources. I actually built this onto a drilling ship that would drill for ice and send it into space so I could refuel my mother ship without having to shuttle ice manually from the planet surface. Worked like a charm.

    @@DragonNationGaming I made a little different variation of the desing you were showing us. But I did use the same princip. What you were using was just fine, the few kilometers, but then the problems started. The welders were doing their job slower and slower. I tried adding welders to the side, which worked, for a little time though... To avoid a long explanation. The best way for this "autobuilder" to work is to add a cargo container with all of the needed components for the conveyors, connectors etc. And use welders alongside the tower. The section you are showing us is 9 blocks long, I used 5 welders for it. And the "timer 1" started, the pistons lifted the whole "autobuilder" 1 section up and welded the projection in a few seconds. I reached 20km now... I am not planning on going further XD. With your desing, the welders needed around a minute for that section(on 7km), and much longer on higher altitude... BUTTTT! now I have a major problem, the shitload of conveyors are making my game stutter when I weld or grind something(especialy big freeze when I grind/weld anything conveyor related). I am gonna transfare what I need and destroy the tower afterwards.... Not much playable in the current state. P.S. - The first few kilometers I even added light blocks and solar panels, so make it more usefull ;)

    @@Boldimore In my design, a few years ago, I did the same thing. I added cargo containers and sorters that pulled the required resources. That solved the problem with the welders but the issue with the welders isn't only because of the distance. With all of the conveyors, the framerate slows down and the welders don't weld because of the lag spike. It's an issue with the game. A few people have built space elevators before but I figured out that they cheated. They went into creative to finish the tether. Never trust a youtuber lol

    Did you actually complete this to space? I'm having problems on the moon, 0.25g of course, but I decided to try there for the first time as I only need to go 2.7km to get to 0g. However, around 200m high, I start to get wobble from the merge blocks connecting and disconnecting. I've tried with shared tension and without....both have similar end results, albiet shared tension enabled reduces the wobble velocity dramatically, but it has far more more initial shock when merging/unmerging than without shared tension...both ending with wobble still uncontrollable. If I don't adjust my timers to WAIT for the wobble to slow to an absolute minimum, carrying on will just increase the wobble dramatically on the next connect/disconnect...and it turns into the world's largest metronome and explodes. However, the wait time is now more than double of the amount of time my vertical pistons take. This needs to be solved, to be viable. Its a station, so you can't use thrusters and dampeners - although you could manually fire them, but that would require you to manually nurse the entire setup. I think it all has to do with the center of mass not being...centered. And the taller you get the more problematic it is. So I am going to experiment with artificial masses on the opposite side of the builder, at top and bottom, probably having to shift the AM between top and bottom depending on which merge block is connected.

  • @DragonNationGaming

    @DragonNationGaming

    3 жыл бұрын

    You would be wrong. The reason it wobbles is because the whole thing is moving too fast and the alignment isn't set up correctly. I had the same issue when I was figuring out piston speed

  • @dansiegel995

    @dansiegel995

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@DragonNationGaming I disagree. Piston speed has nothing to do with it. To prove this, I wait for ALL blocks to stop movement confirmed by build vision. Not 0.05m/s or 0.01m/s but 0.0m/s. When I then merge or unmerge, I get movement - and this can only be due to a shift in the Center of Mass. I have a slightly different design than yours, not using the 9 welders which is ridiculous over kill, but it IS indeed helping you obtain CoM symmetry over the conveyor tubes and junction tower (which should always be your horizontal CoM to eliminate sway - in my case as I remove my old merge blocks and connectors, but yours will be constantly shifting ever so slight because you leave your junk). I am using 5 welders on a piston and they are not fully extended as well - this is causing a CoM marker to be about 1.25m away from the CoM of the Tube Tower. I therefore added 4 Heavy Armor blocks to my welders, shifting the CoM over the center, and VOILA...Merging now causes much much less movement. Its not perfect, but much better and proves my point. I need to redesign my builder anyways because 2 vertical pistons is not giving me a large enough ratio of conveyor tubes vs conveyor junctions. I'm at 5/3 (I should be no more than 4/3 but that's another design problem in my current build, and 4/3 is impossible to create repetitively). Your 8/3 (actually 7/4 but your first block could have been a tube - I drop a conveyor junction on the ground and build horizontally, on both ends, so my first block can be a tube) looks much nicer. The interesting question is would making this in 0.25g (at a few hundred meters up, I'm already at 0.23g now) be easier, harder, or exactly the same on Earth regarding sway to due imperfect CoM alignments and gravity interactions (which will always happen, unless you duplicate your build on the opposite side of the tube tower). I'm guessing easier. In summary, ANY sway whatsoever when you merge or unmerge, is due to imperfect horizontal CoM of the build device. This is exacerbated by height of the current tower, gravity, and current velocity of ANY block when you merge (which is chaotic, as the sway shifts the CoM, and can help or hurt you). Horizontal and Vertical Piston movement causing sway is also due to CoM issues, as you are CHANGING your CoM. I am assuming at this point if horizontal CoM is always perfectly balanced by actually duplicating your builder on the opposite side of the tower, then there should be no sway whatsoever during merging or piston movement (as long as both sides replicate the piston movements). Therefore you can have as many vertical pistons in the build as you want, but 3 is the minimum (you can do it with 2, but due to piston part dimensions you won't be perfectly aligned with both merge blocks when fully retracted - and this will also cause movement). I'll try the CoM symmetry when I build one on Mars. The moon was my test run, as I believe its the easiest conditions.
