The thing about this machine is if you’re coming from just a DAW it might not be for you, but if you grew up using original sps etc it’s a game changer. Mute groupes, resampling patterns, loads of customisable real time effects, chromatic pads, simultaneous triggering of multiple pads, pitch shifting, usb audio etc is huge for a sampler that fits in your backpack. I’m used to the sx so I’m really satisfied. The effects are arguably not as good as our daw’s but still really good. It doesn’t play too well with other midi gear but oh well, we already knew that. When you’re on the sp time starts to dilate, you come up with things you wouldn’t necessarily think of doing in your software, a bit like the digitakt . Sampling straight into the machine. That’s the magic of it. I don’t like looking at retina displays and touch screens all day personally, much prefer this or oleds but I’m old school I guess

I agree... except for the FXS... i wouldn't say they aren't as good as DAW based plugins, they are just different. I would say just as good or better depending on what you are trying to do. I come from a MPC and DAW background but I always wanted to try a SP. One of the things that intrigued me was all the FXS and the lofi. I just got the SP-404 MK2 yesterday... im liking it so far, it is definitely a learning experience.

@@BIGPUN4EVER True, but to some the fx are an acquired taste but I love them for what they are. Roland have pretty much answered to all our demands with the new mk2. I already use the SX and I’m still happy with it but when I can I will go for the mk2. I think you’re gonna love it, trust me I picked up the SX really fast with the manual and I’m NO natural.

Agreed, I used to make music in Reason 10 but I couldn't stand it. I work in IT 8 hours a day 5 days a week and I get tired of using computers sometimes. I picked up a MPC One because it was standalone and I love the workflow. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago I got a 404mk2 and it's been amazing. Once I grasped the workflow its so easy to make music on it. I take it with me on the road and I just hook up my myVolts cable and powerbank and have a lot of battery life to make music on it. It feels like guerrilla beatmaking in that you don't have all the bells and whistles of a DAW or even the MPC 2.0 DAW in a box, but you can get a lot done with it. I work on my 404 every day and I love every minute of it.

I could never sell one piece of my gear and it's the akai remix 16 my first sampler... now with this new sp I really feel my dimension a good compromise between akai and roland world... I'd love to try the sp 505, but ye there is something magic working with just a oled and a bounce of buttons
It is rough at the beginning, it is so weird & rough but then after a little while, it slowly becomes easier and one day, for no good reason, it suddenly becomes fun and soon, you're addicted to that little machine in all its weirdness and you finally end up loving it and spend hours playing, resampling, recording, having a great time
@Gulli_Foyle_Beats
5 ай бұрын
This right here is so accurate. I was confused figuring it out, and I had a maschine background, but the ways to go about doing certain things felt so weird. Eventually it did just click, and now I'm addicted and have been for months
i'll tell ya this; when I got my OG Sp404 over a decade ago (wow, time flies), I sat and read the manual front to back before even trying anything... then I read it again. Then I kept it right next to the 404; it went with the machine in the travel bag to band practice; constantly referring back to it, or even re-reading random bits of it in my spare time. Now, all these years later, I still know the random counter-intuitive input combos for the various commands like the back of my hand. They say working on outboard gear is producing 'out of the box'. the 404 is a world of it's own, and you'll have to think outside of the box as you explore it's seas. Consider the manual your life-raft.
Once you take the time to learn this thing , you realise that it's a beast. Although there is a work around, the ONLY thing i am praying for is being able to playing basslines chromatically in the pattern mode.
@BeefyTime1

Solution. Put it in chromatic mode, resample and play every note, then chop it up to its own pad bank.

@@BeefyTime1 Yeah that's the work around I was referring to in my post brother. It's just a pain in the ass when I'm so used to taking it for granted being able to do this so easily on my my mpc. Don't get me wrong I love this thing to death, just hope they can add this feature in an update and this would be the perfect beat machine for me.

@@deanivan3951 Yea, it has some shortcomings in the workflow, but that’s how Roland is. I’ve got the MC 303 and you can easily adapt how things are done on there to the sp. I think they design this way to keep cost down.

Probably the truthest SP Vid out there and I love it! I’m also new to that little beast, coming from DAWs, and I 100% feel you but slowly I’m beginning to love it!
Cool video! I would love to see more videos of you learning on this! It would probably be helpful for other newcomers learning the 404 for the first time
nice! definitely give it time to absorb and come up on that learning curve. once you kind of get your head around stuff and get more comfortable, its like unlocking a new level or new system of making stuff. limitations are always cool and fun when doing something creative. I love the sound you can get out of the SPs especially once you get good with the compression.
Congratulations! Now I could live vicariously through your KZread videos about the SP404MK2 as well, haha.
Love it, thanks for showing the honest process
This is honestly so cool haha, I think seeing the process (and occasional struggle) of learning new gear is the most honest way to see if it'll jive with you short of being able to play with it yourself (which is impossible for a lot of people like me sadly. Why does Phoenix not have a gear shop for real) (guitar center does not count lol)
Great stuff. Keep going L. Dre 🙏🏽
I feel your pain bro, the learning curb was a bit different. I Finally got a hang of it. Congrats!
Great Video!! Thanks for sharing. I am waiting on one. Trying to decide between this and the Circuit Rhythm but this looks more up my alley.
Sp404 creative sampler and effector long video is the best on YT. I learned the whole unit before it even came. This thing rivals anything you can make music on. Whatever you can’t do on it doesn’t matter much.
Super excited to see you’re looking at promoting Birds of Paradise some more! Still some of your best to date imo 🔥🔥

Great video!!! This definitely has me considering getting this 404 I have the old.sp404sx and compared to this it seem easier with the old even with it limitations.
This is how I learned to make beats back in the analog days.
Ayo, I was waiting for this video lol
It’s the screen for me 🔥🔥
i would be happy to show you how you can benefit from coupling ableton and sp 404 and not just for effects. I m now set to sequence my midi in mpc live, or ableton, and it plays my drum sample on sp404. and i then resample my loops in sp 404, as perfect loops. i can then take my sp 404 out anywhere and continue my track building it through multiple resampling and fx. just to say doing that way allow a better transition from daw to this beautiful gear
I use my SP as an external effects unit in Ableton Live... I have an audio interface with 4 in/out and route the second pair of ins/outs to the SP and then in Ableton Live I route it in the External Audio Effect. It might be possible to do this using the USB C connection instead but I haven't figured it out yet.

I was thinking on how to do this. Hopefully the routing is simple because the FX are bananas

mane i want one of these so bad, but also largely for effects 💀 like i definitely wanna make beats on it BUT THE FX THO
you got this !
Came out nice bro
Got mine a week ago. Second hand. It's great!
I wish if there's a tutorial on how to make those exact filters in fl !
You should try to make more beats on the 404 not only will it be more of a challenge (compared to a daw) but it is very fun and satisfying.
Is there a shift function or something that would allow me to raise and lower volumes of a pad in a live setting without having to choose the pad and causing it to retrigger? I was also thinking about incorporating a midi controller with an encoder, assigned to a designated pad to bring in melodies. Raising and lowering the volume on the fly. I haven't found anything on that. Any info in that would be awesome.
This is dope vid !
This thing is insane

yo Aaron - fellow Canadian here. I pre-ordered with Long & McQuade back in Sept '21 - I got antsy about two weeks ago and cancelled the preorder to get my deposit back and put the money into buying one online (Amazon Japan likely) - right before I was going to do that I was in the Victoria, BC L&M browsing some other gear when low and behold there was a new in box Roland SP 404mk2 sitting on a shelf tucked away. Apparently it wasn't listed in the main database so other stores couldn't steal it away.. anyways, point of the story: check every place you can in PERSON and regularly haha. Good Luck!

Hey, Dre, you should do a live music listening session for upcoming artist. Where unknown artists can submit a song to your email ,perhaps after a fee, that you play for the live stream, there's your thoughts and comments in the chat. If the song is hot, shout them out, if not, next track please. What do you think?

@@LDreTheGiant the way I got it right now is having an external effect rack on the master and then sending it to 3/4 from the Apollo and coming back in on 1/2 from the sp. I have line in cables going out from the apollo channels 3/4 going into line in on the sp and then cables coming out of the line out of the sp into 1/2 on the apollo. I wonder if there’s a better way tho.

fam - there wasn't even a "menu" to dive on all the previous iterations of the 404 (OG, SX, A) - the 404 is a true musical device in which you sometimes have to rely on your ears and creativity. there is something special about the digital/analog converters as well - also - not many understand the value of instantly streaming playback of super long samples with like 0secs load time.
