Soviet WW2 14.5mm Anti-tank rifle vs 20mm IFV armored steel | High Caliber Mayhem
What makes a Soviet weapon unique? Simplicity, reliability and deadliness
Today I brought you some of the most legendary and powerful rifles I've ever seen - PTRD as we call it. Destined to bring down nazi tanks and vehicles, this massive gun was used even as anti-aircraft at some point.
So behold this PTRD! I guarantee you've never seen anything like this before!

You need to brush up on your physics. The rock is not pushing anything anywhere, to do so would require a force which requires energy and the rock is just there doing nothing with zero energy. It can offer resistance to movement by virtue of the energy, in the form of inertia, required to move it. But it doesnt push anything.

the interesting thing about the PTRD is that although being bolt action, the recoil as the barrel retracts into the rear part of the receiver actuated the bolt to unlock which in proper operation it should eject the spend casing. looks like the gun is a wee bit sticky after so many years in the shed

As I remember, this phenomenon is due to the fact that the old wartime cartridges had more gunpowder or more power. I don't remember the exact reason.

@@Watchdreamzzz Old wartime cartridges HAD same power. The problem is inconsistent performance after all these years since ammo used wide array of erzatz powders, with some of them being acidic enough to eat the cartridges themselves. That's why some ammo better be disposed. Or, at the very least, disassembled, inspected for damages and new powder loaded. Also, this channel operates from DPR/LPR. @Firefuzz11

I think you may be mistaken. There is a semi automatic version that has a reciprocating barrel to reduce some recoil and eject the spent casing. The bolt action versions do not have a reciprocating barrel. All you see here is the entire firearm sliding back on the bipod since it is not a solid mount.
Having the plate resting against the flat surface of the rock is as if you are shooting at a rock made of steel. It will not do anything to the plate. If you have open space behind the plate, it will be different.

In the case of anti take rifles, without a penetrator core, they would rely on the concussion of the impact to send shrapnel flying inside of the tank. While I also expected a bit more penetration, I'd like to see what kind of shrapnel would be created on the opposing side of the armor when shot straight on.
Amazing video!
The ammunition is more than likely overpressure in a gun this old but old fashioned Russian steel and ingenuity takes it in stride
Excellent content!

One thing we do have to think about aswell, is the armour pieces are not set in stone, and easily move out of the way, it's easier for the round to push the plating to the side rather then pierce it.
Hey,,, now that was FUN ! ! ! THANKS 🙂😎👍
The same exact cartridge the SRS99-AM Sniper Rifle from Halo uses! Although the one in Halo is an APFSDS (armor-piercing, fin-stabilized, discarding sabot) round). I can definitely see why this drops all kinds of Covenant infantry and Vehicles with little effort!
Do those AP rounds still have tungsten core as WW2 ones had? I think that dedicated rounds used for AT work were tungsten-core. As some normal AP rounds simply use properly hardened steel core.
Wow everyone needs to watch this!
That is best walking stick since Zatoichi's hidden sword..

.002 under bore is a very good bore for accuracy, considering inconsistent bullet diameter. So i suppose .003 under bore may be quite practical if you have consistent ammunition.
Well that looks like a blast to shoot.
Dude, where the hell have you been?! I love your content, and you kinda dropped off the face of the planet for a year. Please, get back to the MAYHEM!!!

Now that's a crew served weapon.
No one will walk, or even crawl away if they are wearing 3 layers of Level 5 armor; taking a PTRD hit will be like being hit in the chest by the arm of a catapult. The blunt force trauma will break bones and damage internal organs. C’est fin.
i would wonder if worn out rifling is causing lower velocities than would be achieved back when it was new and as such loses much of its penetrating energy as well ?. it would be interesting to chronograph it aswell.

I do believe there would be a better chance of penetration if the steel was not sitting against a backdrop of hard stone. Either use a standoff of about 6 inches of open air behind the steel or, place the steel against a couple of inches of wood...I was thinking of 2x4s. That is a powerful round, and should penetrate steel easily.

I don't see anyone talking about this, when he shoots the steel plates around the middle of the video, it should not crack that much. I'm guessing those metal plates are all cast iron, because metal is meant to have a little bend to it, and casting the metal too hot causes it to become almost like glass. This process of superheating casts is very common in Russia, almost all armored vehicles are built this way, and it's why in old photos during the great patriotic war, many knocked out tanks and other armored vehicles have these massive hull cracks. It's interesting to see it happen like this and it displays how casting metal too hot can make it less effective at stopping incoming fire, also it creates even more large pieces of deadly shrapnel
I would love to see how a 300 ultra mag , 338 lapua , 375 cheytac or 416 barret or even 50 bmg compares to this 14.5mm monster. I’m very interested to see if a less powerful round in a smaller rifle is a better over all option vs this behemoth on the modern battlefield. Used against light armoured vehicles, body armour, missiles & other exposed weapons, optics & sensors & even detonate reactive armour ect. Smashing windows, knocking holes in walls , shots at helicopters & the like .

14.5mm is the caliber, and the measure from land to land of the barrel. The diameter from groove to groove is probably something like 14.88. 14.88 is the actual diameter of the projectile.
