SOVIET vs JAPANESE 135mm Battle - Who Made The Best 135mm Lens?

Фильм және анимация

Today we're taking a look at two 135mm's, the Jupiter-37A 135mm f/3.5 and the Hanimex Automatic (70's version) 135mm f/2.8. The Hanimex, some say, was made by Tokina at the time and just branded Hanimex, but documentation on it is quite sparse. However, it cost approximately the same, was made in the same decade as the Jupiter, so it should be a level playing field!

The design of the Jupiter 3,5 /135 mm is based on the original Zeiss Sonnar design. This was quite common in the thirties up to the early seventies The Canon FL 3,5 /135 and the first model of the FD 3,5 /135 s.c. shared the same lens design. The later models were based on an Ernostar design and most manufacturers switched over to the same calculation. One of the most stunning lenses of the Ernostar design ist the Vivitar ( designed by Komine) 2,8 135mm Close Focusing. It has very good image qualitiy and real makro capabilities up to 1:2.

@@SovietLensReviews Yes it is not so often sold as its "normal" brother 2,8 135mm. And even there there were two versions, one by Tokina ( serial # 37 xxxxx) and by Komine ( #28xxxx). The close focusing is a real macro as its companions 2,8 90mm and 2,8 55mm, both by Komine.

A Pentax 135mm f3.5 is pretty cheap and has very good optics - also has built in lens hood. I wouldn't go for a Hanimex myself. The Jupiter has real character though. I have a lot of ex-Soviet lenses and I love the vintage look and '3D pop' they give.

Nice video, I love both Soviet and Japanese lenses, but in this case I would pick the Jupiter

hello colleague, thanks for the video, which do you consider the best or sharpest lens, tair 135 mm 2.8 or Jupiter 135 f 3.5?

Jupiter-11 is sharper, by pretty much all accounts.

Thanks! There is an MC version (multicoated) which is the one you definitely want to pick up. It has higher sharpness and light transmittance.

Fair comment, the Hanimex was apparently manufactured by Tokina though - a fairly reputable brand at the time. Both of these lenses would've been competing with each other in terms of price and general 'bracket' during the 70's - both were 3rd party lenses sold for less than 1st-party (Nikon, Canon) counterparts, so I think it's still a fair comparison. If I ever get my hands on a Canon or Nikon 1st party lens though, would love to test it against the Soviet equivalent.

@@SovietLensReviews Tokina might be considered the same as Soligor and Cosina on some optical lines and we know in today's world, is making the best of the best of optical, the so-though German Voigtlander. Yes, Cosina but this doesn't mean everything Tokina made is par and at the level. Hanimex is at best a junk Japanese!

The Jupiter is a great lens, but Japanese lenses like the Nikkor ai(s) 135/2.8, Konica Hexanon 135/3.2 or Mamiya SX 135/2.8 will outperform the Jupiter, at least in the corners.

A strange choice for a Japanese lens. When I think of Japanese lenses, Hanimex doesn't come to mind in the slightest.

Absolutely. Hanimex at best was the lowest of lower grades, maybe just above the no-name ones and nothing more. This was not a fair comparison. Not an apple to apple but to an apple worm compression at the best!

He should have used a vivitar 135mm made by komine, it would have been a worthy opponent against the jupiter.

In general, Japan wins on small and delicate things, Soviet U, on the big and crude things. But surely you did not choose the best of the either region for the comparison.

Actually the 37a and its variant 37a MC AM is absolutely superb ... and represents the best of Soviet lens design. I am not sure there is a sharper Russian 135mm and the rendition is stellar. I also own the Canon 135mm FD f2.0 which is pure magic wide open. The J37a is slower, but is sonar with 12 blades that amazing rendition. Hard to compare as they suit different needs. The only thing they really have in common is their focal length
