It would have been better had the Latvian authorities set up a monument park as was done in Lithuania and Hungary for many of these memorials. That way, the structures that glorified the communist occupation would have been removed from positions of prominence in the cities and towns, but history would have been preserved. Even graves and human remains that were in public parks and spaces, and not cemeteries, could have been relocated with their markers to such a park. The giant obelisk was quite beautiful, and it could have been refitted to make it a monument to all the Latvians who fought to make Latvia independent after World War I. Methinks that the Latvian government overreacted on this matter.

But it's just few people with russian names and speaking russian who want to keep these monuments! They can take these monuments and go to they motherland. There, all the soviet history will be glorified for years and they can be happy.

Take them to the museums. Totalitarian, extremist systems shouldn't be glorified.

That one guy are so right! I mean, almost no one knows who Adolf Hitler were since there are no monuments of him or his regime…….😑😑😑😑😑 But seriously, that old argument of ”if we tear it down, our history are forgotten” are so incredibly stupid.. 🙄😑🙄

Latvian authorities should think about how to stop the migration of their people, about poverty and not about monuments. It is clear that the order came from America

I think that Russia should think more about pulling its people out of absolute poverty and not about attacking the neighboring country Ukraine. And on the other hand, Latvia can take care of itself and decide to leave the occupation monuments or not - and the Latvian people forced the Latvian government to decide on the dismantling of these occupation monuments!
