Suana was an Etruscan center, which from the conquest of Vulci onwards (280 BC) underwent a gradual process of Romanization, culminating in the creation of the town hall with the granting of Roman citizenship to the Italics.
In the 5th century it is already documented as a bishopric. The current historic center developed during the Middle Ages in the vicinity of the pre-existing Etruscan necropolis, under the control of the Aldobrandeschi family, who had a castle built around the year 1000.
In medieval times it also became a free municipality and gave birth to Ildebrando di Sovana, who later became Pope Gregory VII; it was also the capital of the county of the same name.
At the end of the 13th century it was inherited by the Orsini following the same fate as Sorano and Pitigliano until the 15th century, when the center was conquered by the Sienese.
In the mid-16th century, the definitive fall of the Republic of Siena brought Sovana into the hands of the Medici, who incorporated it into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The Medici tried to repopulate the village, in a state of severe degradation after the plague epidemics, with settlers from Greece: the attempt was useless, in 1702 only twenty-four people were registered in Sovana. Even under the "Lorena" family, despite the attempts, the situation did not improve.
Depopulated and abandoned, it has found new life in the course of the 20th century, thanks to the rich archaeological heritage that makes it a popular tourist destination.
The village is included in the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy sponsored by the National Association of Italian Municipalities.

    Your music choices in your intros are always so rich and vibrant, perfectly matching the stunning visuals unfolding before us. There is always a timeless elegance in these towns, and with each turn down a narrow cobblestoned street, it's like we're entering a different century where people met and spoke and bought goods. Your notes add to the history, adding layer upon layer of events both catastrophic and positive. With the tourism of the last century, thank goodness towns and villages like this have found new life as a reminder to visitors from around the world, that men and women and children actually lived here. Their buildings still stand to this day, and I believe that if one listens closely enough in the late evenings when the tourists have gone home, you can still hear their voices.

    THANK YOU, THANK You , for not adding to overly saturated tours of Florence, Venice, Rome and Sorrento! Enough already! This is so serene, peaceful, and most importantly, OFF the beaten track! Thank you too Why oh Why! Indeed that was the main idea of this small channel.... mainly (but not always) tiny towns and not always the ones you mentioned... exactly that. Maybe the channel doesn't have so much traffic as those showing those other places... but the idea was to show the off-the-beaten paths towns.. mstly the "unknown" ones... yet so rich in history and in beauty. Glad someone can enjoy them!

    What a fascinating place to visit! This has to be one of my top favourites in your travel videos. I like everything about this video from start to finish. The drone intro, the picturesque lay-out of this small town, the wealth of ancient history, the well-maintained buildings and piazzas, the historical monuements, the old Churches, the lovely brick-patterned streets, the beautiful houses, the pretty flowers in front these houses and the overall scenic atmosphere. It was also nice to see couples of different ages, walking about and holding hands. Greatly enjoyed this video very much.

    Another fascinating walking tour. What amazes me is that even small, relatively unknown towns have such a rich history. This is logical when you learn about Italy’s past and how different regions were pretty much independent and ruled by different families, but still… May I suggest Preggio in Umbria for a future walk? It has a population of like 80 people, so for a short walk, it would be perfect!

  • @StillWanderer

    @StillWanderer

    Glad you enjoyed ii Hugo! Indeed... I believe the same, and it was one of the reasons to start this small channel, to let tiny towns be more known, especially considering the many videos of the famous towns around...Indeed, our past is rather troublesome/rich, as one can see it in many ways. Just 150 years ago we were living here in a completely different state and these HUGE differences are still visible today in the various regions. We consider ourselves most of all "romans, milanese, tuscans" ... and only after italians ) Weird but... makes sense. Didn't plan on Preggio... excellent suggestion. I'll put it in my to-do-list
