Southridge Mall - a dead mall in Des Moines, IA - Robbie checks out what is left of Southridge Mall

Southridge Mall is a busy shopping area on the outside, but dead on the inside.
Southridge Mall is essentially a dead mall with a long past, but also a bright future. It had a Younkers, a Sears, a Richman Gordman, a Montgomery Ward, a JC Penny, a beautiful carousel, the Hydrotube - a 1985 indoor waterslide, a Garfield's Restaurant and Pub, and several arcades. It still has a recently remodeled Target, Ross, Marshalls, a Shoe Carnival, the DMACC Southridge Center, the Drake Head Start Program and big plans to turn the old Sears into a massive Genesis Health Center.
Southridge Mall is located in Des Moines, IA. Southridge Mall opened on October 15, 1975, two months after Valley West Mall opened in West Des Moines. Younkers was the first anchor to open, with Sears following in 1977. In 2012 a major portion of the mall was demolished and new outward facing retail shops were created. One section of the mall was left intact and there were many stores there. In 2019 the remaining indoor store leases were terminated and the mall was left empty. The DMACC (Des Moines Area Community College) Southridge campus took over the old JC Penny store and remodeled it for their needs in 2013.
****** The last 2 minutes of the video is about the carousel and the only mall in Iowa to have a waterslide in a mall in 1985. The Hydrotube! *******
Start at 29:45 for the Hydrotube
The mall entrance is open to see for yourself Monday - Friday 7am-6pm only. Closed Saturday and Sunday as of December 21, 2021.

I remember when the mall was always packed. The food courts, the merry go round, it used to be the coolest place to hang out

It was. Merle Hay for me and that mall has changed so much. The new Bucs Arena will really help Merle Hay. They need to get a good tenant in the old Sears building. That will help keep the area going and keep out crime.

@@adventureswithrobbie For sure Merle hey is attracting solid new tenants now. Oddly despite a popular movie theater and Arcade/Bar outside of those areas I still never see high foot traffic in the mall proper. You will obviously see people in Lens Crafters, Target, and Ross, but the people who go there aren't actively walking into the Mall Area. I just noticed the other day that panda express officially left... Stepping over to the strip mall just east of the mall in the game parking lot, burlington coat factory has slowly reduced its store area for the past few years. I wish I knew what that was about, because there is always a good number of people in there. im aware they built a new small location near valley west, so many they are just planning on eventually downsizing one location and fully investing in the other... Let's hope the Dave and Busters does not ruin the Gameday at Merle Hay as the wife and I really like that place.

I still live in the summerset area, and seeing the mall from 2021 and it being almost 2023, is such an honor. May the Southridge mall spirit live on.

I remember my grandma take me here as a child it was not long ago ether maybe 8 years ago i remember walking though there. There wasn't many stores beside the arl, this one store where it had like old Chinese things, and this one store that my friends grandma owned across from the arcade. I remember the arcade alot. I loved going there and playing gamed like carnevil area 51 site 41 ect. I rember this one game it was made by sega where you would drive people in a ambulance. I loved that game. I also rember the merry go round that used to be there and the food court. Its all empty in there and it makes me cry that my child hood died like that. I also miss the toy r us the building isn't really recognizable anymore. I wish i could go back to those day agian and spend atleast one day with my grandma in that mall.

Not sure a mother should be encouraging a young child to ignore the yellow do not enter tape.

I can see your point, but it actually says caution on the yellow tape. Not, do not enter. It wasn't dangerous.
