Only 4449 is the sole survivor of its kind still operating. 4460 meanwhile isn’t operating, but it is on display.

@ThatYankeeKid - Doyle says he got the 4449 up to 87 mph back in the 1980s but also said it was probably the scariest thing he's ever done. Coming back from Michigan last year he didn't break 65 mph. I bet the old girl could do it no problem but quite honestly, I don't think it's worth the risk.

I got my copy of volume 1 and I can only say that it is an amazing production. The authentic audio is a great contributor. definitely worth purchasing.

Just rode behind R&N 425 this weekend and she had a SP passenger 6 chime whistle on her. It sounded beautiful. Like that sound track in this you used it in a PRR video. Sure miss your late narrator. He sure sounded great.

4439 wasn't even at full throttle when she did 95 mph. GS-4s were designed to go 110 mph, and engine 4448 was one of the few engines that have accomplished it.

I think I might just have to add these videos to my collection. I love SP steam, and seeing that GS-4 at 95 mph is just incredible. It's a shame they can't run the 4449 like that today.

The area that she operates consists of old rails, lots of turns, and freight trains. If they were to run her at even 75% speed, she could either fly off the rails or smash into the back of a freight train. I feel like if they were to move her back to her original southern california lines, she could...possibly

Just bought both volumes and got them today. About to go watch both of them once I'm done with homework. Still wished we had free shipping on the videos for when we purchased both volumes. Anyways, thanks a lot Herron Rail. I'm excited and can't wait to watch both of them together.

726berkshire The SP Berkshires were numbered 3500-3509. Those berks were from the B&M.

I got though both of these trailers, and only heard the whistle on Pacific 2475. Every other steamer I heard with an 'alert' mechanism was using an air horn. This is still weird to me.

+Russell Streak SP preferred to use the air horns on engines that gad them, Might have been a company rule.

Were the horns heard farther ahead? Makes sense to use them at non signaled grade crossings.Did locomotives with horns have also whistles?

Robert Gift I believe so. From what I read, the horns worked better at high sppeds, and for the Daylight engine in particular, it was better suited when the Coast Route got foggy.

I know for certain the GS, MT, and AC classes had their air horns near the head-end of the locomotive. The whistles were almost always near the cab, except for the Cab Forwards; their whistles were near the smokestack appartently

Many modern (1940's vintage) steam locomotives had air horns as well as whistles. Horns were considered more audible at speed than whistles, especially important when approaching highway grade crossings at 80 MPH or better!

Southern Pacific rr had an incredible variety of steam power for both freight/ passenger operations ; the 4-6-2, 4-8-2 and 4-8-4 type locomotives were enjoyable to observe in passenger service, especially with the pacing scene of engine 4439 hitting 95 mph. I really need to purchase a copy of this DVD to observe for myself at a later date.

Tailterrier27, The pacific you are unsure of is P-8 #2467. And instead of all survivors being P-8's, there's two P-8's and one P-10. The 2479 is the P-10, while 2467 and 2472 are P-8's.

The live sound recordings and scenes are precious and I would recommend this DVD to anyone who loves SP steam. Only thing I can say about it in a negative way are how drawn out some of the chase scenes can feel. If you're into that though, this is for you.

The film is what it is. Most viewers like chase scenes and they are longer in the DVD. Most of the sound was recorded by the camera man and are original to the film. This preview is only a fraction of what you get on the DVD.

They sound close to #2472’s whistle. Not to mention, they’re sister engines. Only 3 Pacifics are still around: #2472, #2467, and #2479. At least 3 that I know of right now, I’m not sure if there are any others still around, but it’s very unlikely.

They were use as mid train helpers on the Tehachapi Pass at the begining of the Diesel Era

I had to laugh when I saw the Daylight highballing past, accompanied by the sound of a Diesel "honker."

They rarely used the whistles in service back then, you can see the air horn above the smoke box in the skyline casing.

Neat video, although I think the film has been speeded up when the trains leave the station in SF I don't think they ever go around that first curve that fast.

Never knew that some SP steamers had airhorns like PRR S1 had. Great video nowadays

Many SP steam locos had air horns as well as whistles. Do a little research and you'll find which ones had the horns.

For a second I thought it was #2472, but it’s actually the sister engine, #2475.

It just doesn't look physically possible for those drivers to move THAT fast. You'd think it would just tear itself apart.

berk SH AIAREZZZZ(as a easterner would call it) were primarily used by eastern, and central railroads. most western railroads(including southern pacific, santa fe, and union pacific) did NOT use meany locomotive types(as did eastern) such as 4-6-4's, 2-8-4's, 2-10-0's. as well as meany eastern railroads overlooking some western classics like: 2-10-2's, 4-8-2's, and some even overlooking pacifics(nyc had only a few and most others completely overlooked them(of course excluding prr's K4a)

can someone tell the maximum horsepower for each type of engine please? I have 6000 hp for cab-forwards and 5500 hp for the GS daylights. But the internet won't give me answers the rest. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Same here. Also, at 1:44, too bad all the 4-8-2 types were scrapped. If only they saved at least one, it’s more likely it would’ve been on display along side Cab Forward #4294, except not really.

That’s exactly what I was wondering. Not only were the daylight trains getting streamlined, but in very foggy areas of the west coast, the air horns would be used. Most Daylight trains ran in the west coast of the United States. Not to mention it’s easier to blow an air horn than a steam whistle, which you had to pull the cord instead of pressing on a button or lever. At least that would be my way of explaining it.

*****, 2477 doesn't exist anymore, only 2467, 2472 and 2479 are still around.

The Pennsy did the same thing with their S1. Given this specific loco was apparently fined for going 156 mph to make up time, I can see why. No way a whistle would be heard well at that speed.

yes because you can hear a from farther places but they sometimes usr whistles to but they you use horn more often than whistles

Correction. What you saw was one of Espee's home built *three-quarter length* domes.

At 3:51, did she have both the whistle and an air horn blowing at the same time? That sounds wicked cool! I‘ve always thought that most of the larger steam locomotives (like the cab forwards, mountains & GS Northern classes for example) would be equipped with an air horn, but not a smaller 4-6-2 Pacific type. Were the 4-6-2s really equipped with an air horn? Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea that the sound from the air horns travel further than a steam whistle, which I find very useful, and bizarre at the same time.

Almost all mainline SP steam locomotives were equipped with airhorns. There is a video of SP 2467 at Hunter's Point blowing its airhorn in the background.

The GS class, cab forwards and some other classes had air horns as well as whistles. Look for other comments below about air horns on SP steam.
