Hey there, friends! Lesson today for the much-requested Southern Cross, the 1982 classic from Crosby, Stills and Nash. This is a song that's fairly easy to approach (using only A, G, and D for the most part) but can likewise be quite tricky when it comes to capturing the "feel" of the CSN album recording. Fear not, I'll teach you how to approach it - starting with beginner-friendly basics, and then show various ways to add color using intermediate strumming skills.
I've also included an extended video lesson (available @ songnotes.net/lessons/446), which slowly plays through each section of the song along with tabs & strumming diagrams on the screen. This additional lesson also shows you a few alternative ways to play the main riff, different from what I teach in the main lesson. Likewise, I've posted by beginning-to-end cover of the song as well - in case you want to hear how it sounds when you put it all together - also available via the link above. Enjoy!

I ALWAYS LIKE THE WAY YOU TEACH. BETTER THAN MOST WITH THE TIME YOU TAKE AND VISUAL CUES OVERLAID.
David, My guitar teacher and I agree that your lessons and tabs are really the best available online. Keep up the great work. Also, this is the song that got me playing guitar so a big thanks for covering it!

Wow thanks so much Tom, great to hear - I hope the lessons continue to be helpful long into the future! All the very best with your playing, and say hi to your teacher for me!
Can’t get any better than this!! Thank you for posting!
Thank you, nicely illustrated, which we will help me totally now to do this cover song.
Just got the song sheets today. Love the font. I can actually read it without reading glasses. A big help!
Love this song - one thing is instead of the Bm you could do Cadd9 instead - takes you to the A neatly.
This is great!
Love it and thank you so much. Downloaded all from Music Notes and it is awesome. You are the best. Now just gotta get these old fingers working…..

Love it! Have you ever done any Heart songs? Love some tabs by Heart.
Thank you for the lesson. There is one thing I am wondering about. Multiple times during the song there is a cool lick after the Dsus4. I can't figure out how and where, on the guitar, that they play the lick.
David, I believe the Key is D Major, not A. Please affirm or correct me here. Am a newbie, but my Hal Leonard chord wheel would indicate D, playing G Major as the IV chord and A Major as the V. Thx. Great lesson.
Nice one bora to Len gutter
Hi David! Love your lessons. Your guitar sounds great. What brand and gauge of strings were used for this lesson? Thank you.

That appears to be a Taylor Mini-e Koa, the strings are probably 11-gauge. Since it is a small body, short-scale guitar they might be 10s.
I find this song hard to sing. I’m no great singer, but can usually muddle through a song… something about this one going from verse, to pre-chorus, to chorus gets me above my register; I can’t seem to stay in whatever “range” I started with. Is there an intrinsic reason for that with this song? Obviously, CSN are masterful singers. Maybe I’m just ingrained to replicate what they do having listened to it so many times… at my own peril, of course. Thanks.
done, bought the sheet, but can you add lead licks that are in the background?
Just an observation: It sounds to me like there should be a short Asus4 riff after "I've been around the world".

I definitely agree! Assuming you're talking about the moments just before he sings "Looking for that woman, girl" - listening to the song after I recorded this, that's one item I wish I tapped into further. Asus4 sounds right-on to me. Thanks for noting this!
