Great video! Thank you for showing us around your gorgeous new boat. When my husband and I were looking for a long-term cruising vessel for our retirement, we viewed several Southerlys (though much, much smaller than yours). Really great layout and we loved the lifting keel, but we ultimately opted for a smaller-sized, British-made catamaran: a Catalac 900. Circumstances have taken us from the UK to Germany, but our boat is still lying in Brighton, waiting for us to bring her home. So we'll be crossing the Channel in the near future, and could really use a reliable guide like the one you are offering. Looking forward to your next video! Fair winds!

Beautiful. Especially like the dolphins. One can imagine them communicating with you throughout the voyage. I have no doubt they cleared your prop, probably their leader developed it into a game for the younger dolphins. I hope you have won awards for your videos as they're very enjoyable and extremely informative.

We had 2 pet dolphins that knew our dinghy by sight (or sound?) and would ride under our bow as we went back and forth along the shoreline of the anchorage at Santa Cruz Island (Channel Islands CA USA). They would stand up on their tails when they saw us heading towards their beach area and then we would spend an hour or so with them. Great memories of our wild dolphin playmates at our islands here in the Santa Barbara Ca USA area.

Please do more interior everyday living footage, I scour those meticulously for hints of ideas on how to make sailing easier. We’re heading off on pretty much the same route next year, having delayed for a year due to a health scare. We’re using the time to gain more experience and exposure to the channel quirks and dangers, hence seeing you anchored near Thorney Island the other week! I would love to have the pilot book during this time, as relying on the internet has been a bit sink or swim, so to speak! If I get drawn for it, I promise to pass it along to someone else when no longer needed too... (I get a lot of happiness from leaving novels etc on cafe tables when I’ve finished them too,) Great video again guys, thanks!

Currently anchored off the Island of Gigha having rounded the Mull of Kintyre earlier today, heading further north later in the week. Planning on heading towards Portugal in 2019 so please add me to the book list, it would be very useful, one of the biggest costs for distance sailors is books and charts.

You could have a batten sewn in the top of the lee cloth. I have seen this done by a sail maker for a race boat. It makes for a stiffer and perhaps more comfortable support. I would love to have the English Channel guide! When you get electronics wet, don't just do the rice thing. the problem is the conductivity of water ( especially saltwater) shorting them out. NEVER turn the device on. Take it apart as much as you can, draining it, flush it with pure alcohol, or even distilled water if you have nothing else, to remove the tiny salt crystals that may bridge microelectronics. The electronics themselves are impervious to water, it is the shorts it creates when the devices are powered on. 99% alcohol is super useful as a cleaner, other uses, and can save your expensive electronics.

In 2000 I wrote up the rice thing as a hail Mary. I'd been in China and got wet with an exposed roll of film in my pocket, but not in the container. I asked for dried rice at Tina's Guest House in Tiger Leaping Gorge, packed the rice in the container with the film and a few weeks later got it processed. My friends online and I discussed using rice to dry out wet electronics. Did I start this? I find it hard to believe that I did. Silica packs had been in things for 50 years so the concept of a hydroscopic material keeping items dry wasn't new, and of course the hydroscopic properties of dried rice were well known. I did a whole write up as a How To if your stuff got wet. Ten years later after I'd dunked a cheap flip phone and went to AT&T to get a new one I swear the clerk quoted me back my instructions almost verbatim. She'd learned it in training. Later I asked about wet phones at Verizon and TMobile, they also gave me the rice tip, but neither sounded anything like my original writing. So AT&T? Maybe? Weird. (You'd think a billion dollar corporation would actually say, 'Instead just copying something from some knucklehead on the net, lets spend $5000 testing it.' I had friends who read my tip and scoffed at it. It helped your Go Pro? Whoopee! The fresh water tip (not mine) is to dunk it in the fresh water to about the same degree as it was dunked in salt water. And you can still eat the rice. Dolphins are super cool and smart in ways we can't even imagine. I paddled a lot around a particular pod in Santa Monica Bay. I had no idea that they remembered me. I had a 17' wooden strip kayak. When I made a 19' foot narrower strip kayak and took it out the first time, they came in a beeline from a mile away to check it out. On the surface it's 'Look it's dolphins,' but underneath the water is where they twist and do their looking at you.. I made the two kayaks, but from 50 meters away I wouldn't be able to tell them apart. A week later, I still hadn't caulked the foam bulkheads because I hadn't decided on a final position. These were an inch all round bigger than the hull, I had to hammer them in with a mallet, they were also 4" thick. I figured they were sealed enough. When I flipped over, the two holds filled up like the bulkheads weren't there. I called the life guards for help. Again from a mile away the pod made a beeline for me. Wow I thought they're going to help me. No Disney film.. They shot by looking up at me, 'hey, he's in the water' and then kept going. I like your boat, a lot. Hey my fellow Canadians, I'd love the guide!!!! I have a Boreal 47 being built in Tréguier France with a delivery date of March!! I look forward to April and May in the English Channel then will probably day sail the Brittany coast down to Bordeaux and enter the canal system (being a swing keel like you). It would be a blessing as would any other information ... I'm a Channel, Brittany Coast neophyte!

Wow exciting project. We sailed in to treguier a few years ago and saw the boreals on the dock. I’m sure you’ll have a great time. Pease keep us up to date. Is the boreal already started?

Yes construction is well under way! The boat just came back from the paint shop where they only paint the deck and super structure and buff the aluminum hull. I will be visiting again in 2 weeks... very exciting. I purchased your entire series of DVDs and I watched your videos of your visit to Tréguier with great enthusiasm!.Your canal videos were so inspiring and encouraging!

Sure a beautiful blue water cruiser, but has it any space for a combi Washer/dryer? and a small generator? I suppose for a live onboard boat that is important? Power management in general i see you solve with solar panels and 2 wind generators, that looks great.

Thanks Dick. The forward cabin is super comfortable in port but at sea has more motion than the others so we don’t plan to use it as a seaberth except if going downwind.

Paul+ I am wondering if that arch could be added to a Southerly 47? for better control of the aft end of the boom? I'm hoping that you will be showing the workings of the arch in a future episode. PLEASE? I'm also wondering if you will be adding a solar arch in the future? I was surprised it took me a second watch through this video and saw the arch in more detail the second time. I was wondering before if that addition had just been deleted through production. Or if it was to be added later. I love your new 480. And enjoy all of your videos.

I don't think the same arch could be added to the Southerly 47 since the deck is completely different and wasn't reinforced to take it. But then the S47 has a traveller so I think it works fine. We will show it working better in future eps :-) And yes we're working on a Solar Arch here in Gibraltar - to be added in September holding 400-500 watts of panels...

I hope there will come a day when I can meet you two in person. If I can sell my home (a converted church) before the sailboat I've been searching for is lost to someone else, I would love to sail up to you guys and invite you over. You may recognize the designer, Dick Carter and the sailboat is a Carter Offshore 50.....with a swinging keel, 3.5' to 10' draft and is a Furling Staysail Equal-Masted Schooner (2 masts, no boom!) rig. You probably would still decline a trade though ;). That is okay....I am happy with her and her awesome keel and single-handed rig. Here is hoping things work out in our favor!!
