Southbound - Ep 06 -Whales & Waterfalls, Van Life in Juneau, Alaska - Overlanding the Pan American

Exploring Alaska in an adventure van is wonderful. It gives you the opportunity to pause in the best places, and it also provides shelter from the rain and bugs. With our Winnebago Revel Sprinter 4x4, we can access very remote areas and still have all the comforts of home. This was key in exploring SE Alaska in late summer/early fall when it rains a lot.
In this episode, Peter and Kathy Holcombe put their Sprinter on the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System and make the trip from Gustavus to Juneau. They then find a wonderful oceanfront free camp spot. They wake up to a jaw-dropping display of whales spouting and showing some tails.
Then they explore Nugget Falls on Mendenhall Lake just outside of Juneau, AK. This is an easy hike to a dramatic spot with a 377-foot-tall waterfall crashing into Mendenhall Lake. This all lies next to Mendenhall Glacier, a spot that seems otherworldly beautiful.
This is just another wonderful stop on their Pan-American journey from Deadhorse, Alaska, to Ushuaia, Argentina. This is the greatest road trip on earth. Famagogo will be making weekly KZread videos about this journey. We welcome you to follow along.

Thank you. Yes, we will have all the Alaska info in a field guide. We are hoping to have that up on Patreon in the next month or so. This should be a great field guide with all the info about the ferry system and places we visited. Thanks for your patience.

Yea, it does have a cost. It's a balance the fuel/maintenance costs and getting to go to places that you can't reach otherwise with your camper van .

Hi Peter ,I do have a question . You are over landing the pan American highway starting in prudoe bay to Argentina . But now you are on the marine highway headed to Washington . Isn’t that skipping part of the highway ? I do realize Canada does not recognize the pan American highway ,But I thought the journey was on an actual road the entire trip . Just wondering .

Hello Kelly, That's a good question. We have already driven the way up in the past so we didn't want to retrace a route we have already done. The Pan-Am for us will be a loose interpretation as its about the places we want to visit rather than staying on the actual highway. It seems many other travelers do the same. But we will use the actual Pan-Am as a basic route from North to South and be on it for much of it.
