The very first South Park Paramount+ special dropped on Thanksgiving and wow was that WILD. If you missed it, or are completely unaware that this special even happened, earlier in the year Matt Stone and Trey Parker signed a massive deal to deliver 14 specials to Paramount+. Yep, FOURTEEN. This is the first one, it’s a full SIXTY minutes long, and they’re delivering another next month, but wow I’m pretty excited about the risks they’re taking with this one. If you missed it, the South Park Post Covid special jumps forward FIFTY years and showcases all the kids from South Park as 50 year olds, and showcases a pretty bleak future. So spoilers ahead, obviously!

This whole episode was about the left vs right battle of information between Matt and Trey, or between them and their family members, and Chyna. They're setting up the fact that China has ruined the world. Not just in the covid sense, but also the co2 pollution and plastic in the ocean and over-fishing and funding animal poaching and deforestation. And of course their openly announced ambitions to overthrow the US. And the way they're threatening to nuke the US and Japan and anyone that tries to stop them from invading and conquering Taiwan. And that's not even mentioning the literal concentration camps in China with slave labor. Mark my words, they're about to drop the mic on China.

I love how, even now, after five decades, Randy still doesn't want to admit it really was his fault that the pandemic happened and keeps blaming it on China. It really is like that Randy analysis video Johnny made. Randy's too scared to admit what he did was wrong because he's equally frightened of how others see him. In a way, the Post-Covid Special shows that. Randy put his own feelings first, and that's what tore the Marsh family apart. By refusing to admit what he did and not taking into consideration how his family feels about the damn farm, he's essentially let his insecurities spiral out of control and ruin his family.

Honestly, that's what I'm expecting is going to happen? And it feels like there's small hints to that being the case: his wife's almost complete lack of response to hearing Cartman gave Kyle AIDS; the fact that the girl is literally named "Menorah" (really makes it seem like they just picked the first thing they thought of that was obviously from Jewish culture that sounded vaguely like a girl's name) while the boys have such "over the top" Jewish names as well; how much Cartman is playing up how he's Jewish now, especially whenever Kyle is within earshot (especially the whole thing with the first night his family spends at Kyle's); and the way the kids go from apparently being sweet little angels to being incredibly rude to Kyle specifically pretty much on a dime.

I honestly really hope that it turns out that Cartman is genuinely Jewish, and he's not just trying to mess with Kyle. Everyone's expecting a big twist where it turns out Cartman dedicated forty years of his life just to piss Kyle off, but I feel like that's too predictable for Cartman. Something I'd love to see in the part two would be Cartman trying to stop the others from going back in time, in an attempt to stay the way he is, and not revert back to the person he was before. That he's actually happy with his family and his faith, and he doesn't want to become the evil, narcissistic Cartman that he was as a kid. That's just my take though, considering that either way, the show is likely going to return to the status quo and have Cartman be Cartman again.

y'know this theory might actually make sense. The one future where everything goes to shit, and everyone is miserable, Cartman, the one person who's entire being is like he's the spawn of satan himself found purpose and turned his life around in a bleak and hopeless future. It's as if the whole universe going to shit had that butterfly effect on them all, that in exchange for everyone else being miserable, Cartman converted to Judaism, found himself a loving wife and three kids and actually reformed himself. something we all thought was impossible for someone who has roleplayed as Hitler or grounded a kid's parents into chili flakes and fed it to him.

I love what Matt and Trey are doing. I think they have completely gave the series new life. Like you said being completely different yet still South Park. They are willing to spin their show in different directions and play in the world they created. And it really works with a show like South Park. I’m confident that Matt and Trey can continue playing with new ideas with South Park like this for years to come and maybe surpass the Simpsons one day in being the longest show running. My mom hates South Park, it’s not her kind of show, but I had her watch this episode and she even said “this was really good”. For the first time I think my mom actually really likes South Park. And that is something special that I don’t know of people realize yet that the show is not just retaining old audiences but bringing in new ones and doing it successfully at Season 24/ special event

Wouldn't be the first time something like that has happened. Think back to some of the people who got resurrected thanks to Kenny undoing the events of the Canadian-American war in the movie. Bill Gates proceeds to cause a bloodbath between PS4 and Xbox One fans, on top of murdering the Sony President. And Mr. Garrison not only becomes the US President, but proceeds to nuke Canada--effectively killing even MORE people than the CA war in the movie. Though, considering this was a deal made with Satan himself, I can't help but feel like this was intentional on the creators' part.

Honestly, watching this special reminded me a lot of Season 6 of South Park. In fact, a lot of aspects can be traced back to Season 6. Kenny previously dying and not coming back, leaving his friends to find their own ways to cope with his loss (A Ladder to Heaven), seeing future versions of the characters (My Future Self and Me), not to mention the name change Butters underwent, as Professor Chaos's first appearance was in Season 6. I'm really interested to see where this is going to go. What truly *did* push Butters over the edge, to the point where he fully embraced his Chaos persona and is now institutionalized? Will the boys even succeed at replicating the time travel Kenny underwent? Would the New Kid possibly help with that, given that they also possess the ability to travel back in time? Moreover, given that Carol has hit menopause--effectively preventing Kenny from ever getting reborn again--would he even *want* to be brought back? I don't know, but I want to know. This has become very, very interesting.

My hot take. This episode has a greater message about blame. It's basically what Kyle said to his mom in the movie, "You go off and blame everybody else. But I'm the one to blame." We need to take responsibility instead of blaming everyone else. As the world gets crazier with more things out of our control, it's easy to blame the world around us. And this special has more than enough examples of that. Some of the blame is justified, but others are outright ridiculous: - Kyle and Token are quick to assume that Kenny was murdered. - Stan and Randy both blame each other for the Tegridy Farms tragedy. - Kyle is convinced Cartman is "f***ing with him". Focusing too much on a stupid joke than the task at hand. - Everyone singles out Clyde as the unvaccinated one. - Jimmy blames woke culture for making comedy difficult instead of coming up with new jokes. - Randy blames 'Chy-nuh' for America losing its way. - The morgue scene is literally Stan and Kyle spitting out all their blame of each other. In an already disgusting scene. - Even Kenny blamed his friends for 'everything going wrong'. So much so that he got himself and many scientists killed to stop it all. - On the contrast, Cartman is no longer in his victim mindset and is actually happy. (But he's definitely f***ing with Kyle). However, it's like Kyle says at the end. They should've solved their problems instead of fighting each other. The world is f***ing crazy. It's been crazy since life first walked on it. But if you let all the craziness govern your life and make yourself a victim, you'll end up a jaded washout like Stan and Kyle. South Park has always been about individuals taking control, and this special is no different! Edit: Clyde also blames f***ing shellfish for not getting the vaccine. I should've mentioned that.

Totally underrated comment, and I think you hit the nail on the head with this one. No one wants to admit responsibility these days and it seems as though Matt and Trey are extrapolating this mindset into our possible future. People keep pushing for easy targets when they get hurt rather than stopping to think critically about the world around us and asking themselves: - how much of this was my responsibility, and - what could I have done differently?

I actually have a theory about this deal with the specials. And that is this isn't going to be a two-parter, but rather a proper trilogy. Spoilers for those who haven't seen Post-Covid.This special acts as the first act, setting up the world, it's characters, and introducing us to the inciting incident that sets the plot into action. At the end of the special, the guys make their decision to set the plot of the second special into motion. The one we're getting next month will most likely be the second act, raising the stakes and getting the characters passed the point of no return. I predict that it may be about putting Kenny's notes together in order to time travel. The subplot this one can introduce is Randy's mission to recreate the cure and possibly sabotage the guy's mission. Victor Chaos will be fully revealed by this point, possibly as the twist in the third act, and the guys will be just starting to head to the past at the end as the 2nd act low point. Finally, we get one last special, possibly in January, to act as Act 3, doing the time travel mission, which will lead to the climax and finally the resolution of the whole thing. Maybe they'll address the 4th Wall stuff in this act, and hopefully they repair their relationship with Butters as well as Kenny. Again, just a theory, but I think this set-up will make for a great trilogy.

The reveal that Stan burned down Tegridy Farms and accidentally killed Shelly, which cost Sharon to kill herself was shocking. Really a sad and tragic fate for the Marsh family. The scene with Kyle wishing for someone (like Mr. Hankey) to help them was funny, but also confusing considering Kyle and Mr. Hankey didn't leave on good terms the last time they saw each other. When the scene with Kenny trying to time travel happend i thought that the experiment had simply gone wrong and that's what killed him, but instead it worked. Rabbi Cartman is really funny and personally i think him becoming jews maybe because of his new wife and family. Also the reveal of Victor Chaos being Butters was pretty clever if you remember Professor Chaos. Does make me wonder if this means that Butters has gone crazy in the future or did someone put him there?

Maybe Karen is a nurse and/or a volunteer at the mental hospital where Butters is (mostly because I have no idea how it would all tie together otherwise) Maybe she can be a surrogate for Kenny since Carol is too old to give birth to him again I’m betting Kevin is either in the mental health field as a recovering alcoholic or a full blown drunk like his father Ike is probably an ambassador to Canada and the states since he was always trying to follow his Canadian roots but still very much an American. The whole episode is a look at the devastating effects that current day attitudes will have on the world. If you notice Stan, Kyle and the others are constantly looking for someone else to blame instead of doing something to solve the problems they have. The moment when something difficult arises they instantly want to avoid addressing it like when Kyle and Stan start blaming each other and agree not to talk about it or when Stan just runs out on everyone in the church. It's because of "woke" mentalities that they can't address anything controversial or difficult. Jimmy's reluctance to make any controversial joke extends to literally off stage and into the real world where he can't say anything bad about the president who I'm assuming is transgendered because of the name. Our world has already become that parody, just look at what happened to Dave Chappelle. Some of what's in the episode isn't just bleak, it's reality. People are over emotional and looking for others to blame instead of dealing with problems reasonably. The whole defund police was apart of that mentality. People didn't have an understanding of the system or a working solution to the problem that existed instead all they wanted to do was throw blame around and cause even more harm than good. They wanted to paint a whole system as bad and disregarded the individuals that made up that system. The episode also shows us a disbanded police department followed by a killing that's ignored and has become normalized. I think the episode should have put more of that as well. In fact without an authorized system the city would be looking far worse. There would be vandalized buildings and graffiti all over. Vehicles broken into, Speeding, Gang wars, stealing etc. It would be Anarchy, which was always a ridiculous system where the only ones who believed in it were the ones that are selfishly motivated. The ones who don't want to be told what to do and would commit half of that list I just made.

I like the special itself but I'm a little concerned how everything will turn out. We're talking about a show that's characters have been kids for over 20 years, seeing them all grown up like this is a huge milestone but I'm not sure if I'm ready for, which is why I'm hoping it's not a permanent change.

Honestly, I believe that Cartman at first was going to do a long con against Kyle for breaking up their friend group and making them all have to go through email for Kenny. He started by learning everything he could about the Jewish faith, even becoming a priest (cant remember the actual term I'm sorry) But I believe him meeting Yentel and having a family actually changed him. I believe his kids taught him how to change so he could he a good father to them. I believe Cartman actually found god and redemption, or at least has changed for the good like most bullies do when they grow up. So it's both he planned for this and didnt plan for this.

@@libertatemadvocatus1797 I don't really agree. I think this is wishful thinking from an outsider or bullied kids experience where they always "want" bullies to lose and become raging unsuccesfull douchebags. But in reality they probably grow up, get a decent job, start a family, and become good fathers to their sons. There are probably exceptions as with all things, but to think that everyone becomes an "back to the future" style garbage man? Nah.

The reason why South Park is so clever with their jokes is that there's always a joke about society at large underneath the arc of the episode. More specifically if they make a joke about a single person not being vaccinated and that causing a quarantine in South Park, the joke is about people not getting vaccinated but it's also possibly how crazy it might be to lock down after one case of covid. At the end of the day the joke is that people care so much either way. And this epsiode is filled with examples of that, this would just use the one you're talking about. Like at the end of the day all of their jokes have the common denominator of people are stupid for caring so much about what it is they believe, the idea being that nothing matters and who the hell cares. Very nihilistic but like.... yeah that's people at our core. We don't have a purpose so we invent purposes and saying that any person's one purpose is more important than someone else's is silly. And then the creators of South Park just piss on everything.

Thankfully, the latter was teased perfectly in the last scene of the special & most likely will appear in the next one (Hopefully, along with General Disarray?). Don't know about the others though? Edit: I hope Future Cartman ends up using the Time Machine to meet his past self & it ends up tying into the end of the episode, "Me & My Future Self"

I absolutelly loved the special! I wouldn't mind more specials with grown-up characters. But the only issue is that it is set in the future - you can't satirize too much about something that hasn't hapened yet 😅 If only it was set in the present... But whatever they make, I'm so excited for all 14 specials and probable 2 film-arcs each year. I want them to return to the old format though, where arcs were 1 - max 3 episodes. I love complete stories which you can watch out of a context of all season. It makes episodes memorable and special.
