The campaign to lobby against free downloads (which is literally what the internet was designed to do, make massive data files readily accessible for all forms of communication.) was deceitful propaganda from the beginning. It was a full on campaign where labels put their artists on to sing about the technology as though users were STEALING media. Rather than embrace innovation they sought to monopolize the industry as a systemic staple through legislation. Theft is taking something from someone else. If someone downloads a "copy", no one was robbed. Furthermore the labels pointed to lowering sales, which was in actuality an expected drop in sales as everyone whom had been changing over to the new technology of CD's (Yeah, kind of a brief run in retrospect) and therefore the initial boom of unprecedented album sales was coming to an end. Another lie was that the artists were being stolen from, even as the labels themselves continued their practices of exploiting artists, and retaining eternal intellectual property rights to anything they sold of the artist. The internet would have forced the industry to change. To get better. Outlawing the competition is a far more profitable (and increasingly commonplace) practice. This is why the richest artists have or are their own labels. This laid the groundwork for all manner of internet regulations to follow, leading to the dystopian propaganda and censorship of the populace through the distribution of information, sorting people into 'bubbles' that we see today. Thanks a lot Metallica. You sued your biggest fan and damned the free world from free music, potentially for all eternity. (No they didn't do everything cited here, but they marked the beginning of the movement that fundamentally changed how all internet media would be regulated and what innovations would be permitted to evolve going forward. It became the basis for taking control and liberty from the common people so much so, that right now you might be reading these words on a device you paid for, full of apps or programs you paid for, on a provider service you pay for, with accessories you paid for, and yet you own almost nothing on any of it. Not the game you play. Not the browser you use. Nothing but maybe the box. MAYBE. Even that has laws of what you can do with it.)

Indeed. Exploitation can come in many forms too. Child labour, Christian music, and pharmaceuticals which don't just exploit people's belief that drugs can help, but over time degrade a person's health so they buy even more pharmaceuticals. Token playing bass had me laughing so hard. The face he makes while he does it. Like he was possessed by a bass player and his hands just played. 😂
Coming from a religious upbringing, this episode hit harder than most others. I can see Trey Parker giggling non-stop while he was writing all of those Jesus songs. I'm stoked you are hitting up this episode. Truly one of the greatest Cartman episodes ever. Have you thought about doing the greatest anti-Disney episode of all time, called "The Ring"? Season 13, episode 1. It just might be might favorite episode of all time.
Faith is one of the role playing games attributes, like strenght for warrior and mana for mage, faith is for clerics. "Faith +1" may be justr a bonus for weapon, potion or spell.
"3 Times a Lady" was by The Commodores back in June of 1978.
To be fair, Cartman wasn’t lying, it’s wasn’t just for the money, it was also to rub it in kyles face 😂

"Be as sick as you want, just give me a g-d- bass line!" lives in my head to this day. It's like the funniest possible way to tell someone to quit whining and do their job.
Before they sort of accidentally got roped into doing an animated sit com, Trey Parker actually had dreams of writing and producing Broadway musicals... he's got a real passion and talent for it... that's why the songs are always so good. Matt and Trey had their own band DVDA before they ever made South Park, and when they were both film students at the University of Colorado Boulder they made a student film (amateurish but hilarious) called Cannibal! the Musical... of course they would later go on to make the South Park movie which is also a musical, and Team America: World Police which is kind of a musical, and eventually they would actually get to produce an actual Broadway musical when they collaborated with the guy who did Avenue Q to make the Book of Mormon, which won a Tony for best musical that year. So... yeah... Trey likes writing songs.
As a famous philosopher once said "It's not about the money, it's about sending a message."
The original iPod came out in 2001 along with iTunes. So yeah Napster was actually old news by the time this episode aired. But of course people will always figure out how to download music for free.
Trey and Matt were a band before they started doing the cartoons. That's why their original music is always so good

There was a Christian boy band called “plus one” that they ripped on in this episode. The three piece band on stage was suppose to be Third Day, I believe.
Ha ha. Butters with the "you got knocked the fvck out" after the guy is already down
I think Faith +1 is a reference to roleplaying games like D'n'D. Where an object can give you for example a Strength+1 boost.
I like how Cartman makes millions but ruins everything because he lost a bet
I remember Lars Ulrich was extremely angry over Napster and all the illegal downloads. There were many, many who were arrested over it. So the FBI crashing through the window wasn’t too far off, minus the window crashing. But they were cracking down on it
This episode is a guilty pleasure😂Body of Christ should be a whole song.
I love this episode so much. I remember singing these songs when this episode came out when I was in 8th grade I think 😂 My mom was definitely caught off guard
Such a great episode. The look on your face when you heard the preview of Faith +1’s album was priceless 😂
It's basically based on the Napster saga... if anyone remembers that 😅 I think it was Metallica who sued Napster for piracy. That's why they've shown Lars Ulrich in there lol

I remember the download and burn on CD piracy crisis. It led to copy protected CD's that didn't even run an all players, which also lead to bands promoting their CD's as non copy protected, to show that they weren't on the warpath with their own fans.

I’ll definitely get there at some point! Stay tuned!
In the DVD commentary they say there was a full Faith+1 album produced, most of which was never used and it is not released anywhere.
I always love the episodes where Stan/Kyle are wrong but for the right reasons while Cartman is right for the wrong reasons. It’s made even better once Kyle sees the error of his ways and Cartman gets a big fat L.
I watched this episode the other week with my Mum and my niece. My Mum was laughing the hardest. She said "I REALLY do LOVE South Park." Lol we've been watching since it first premiered here in '98. I didn't think 11 year old me would be allowed to watch it til I saw my Mum and her partner laughing at Kenny's death in the Kathie Lee Gifford ep.
The ending was just perfect. Good for you butters. I remember laughing my butt off when this episode first aired. I've been trading music and computer games since the late 80's and back then I didn't need to worry about the FBI breaking down my windows.
The songs from this episode are cursed ear worms. They’ve been frequently popping into my head at random since this episode first aired.
I think the "Faith + 1" reference is something like that old "Infinity + 1" phrase. Something that's Absolute, Infinite, Eternal... and then a little bit more. 👍
This is easily one of my favorites from the show
Okay but why are their songs actually kinda bangers 😂
Napster, Limewire and Kazaa. I remember all that stuff. Always used them to download anime and... other things though, not music. Also, love the habitual line stepper clip. I use that phrase to this day to describe certain types of people lol

Korg is a great brand. Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish uses them exclusively, and he is a music genius.
The part right at the end is my favorite bc no one would hav guessed Butters would do anything like that, which makes it all the more hilarious
The +1 is referring to Token, surprised nobody's figured it out lol this is Cartman we're talking about
