South Korea disability activists sued by subway bosses for causing 'major disruption' - BBC News
Disability activists in South Korea are being sued by subway authorities for causing 'major disruption' during the Seoul morning rush hour.
Solidarity Against Disability Discrimination in South Korea say they want all stations to be wheelchair accessible and more funding given to disability provisions in the national budget.
The hard-line response by authorities has led to a bitter feud and clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

Everyone should realize that sooner or later we will all be disabled in one way or another at some point in our lives...So improving the conditions in all aspects of life for these people, as well as making them a part of the conversation truly benefits us ALL.

No one argued with that but the point is that no one should disrupt other people's lives for a protest on purpose. There are rules to follow in protesting. Whether it is about environmental issues or the treatment of the disabled, protests should not make such a disorder.

Accessibility isn't just an issue for the disabled. It is also a concern for the elderly. As many developed countries ages, this is going to become more important.

so the politician decides to go with zero tolerance instead of trying to resolve the issue. so many want to just kick the can down the road instead of addressing thing. Keep the fight up. accesibility is needed.
How is this still a debate in Korea? No one chooses to be physically disadvantaged. Discrimination against anyone for something that is beyond their control is absolutely deplorable. What about respecting your honored warriors and your elderly? This is deeply ingrained in your culture, already. Why not extend it to those less fortunate as well? I clearly don't really know how infrastructure is in Korea or how it has evolved even in this 5 months, but if they had to go to those limits for the people to talk about them then it's because it isn't talked about enough. My dad is in a wheelchair and luckily were I live everything has accomodations. We just finish adding a ramp to the building we live in after he lost his leg. Some people would think: "why would I pay for a ramp if I don't need it?" You may not need it now, but who says you won't in a few months, or weeks, or years? Who says you won't lose you won't have an accidental and lose all your body mobility? Or have an illness that made the only viable option cutting one's limb? If my dad lived in a place we're accomodations weren't there for him I would protest too. They didn't chose to be in a wheelchair. They found themselves in that situation. Why shouldn't the government help their own citizens? So, by your last sentence. "They don't care about other's (rights)" Does anyone actually care for theirs?
Why aren't the subways handicapped accessible?
Almost South Korean do not repot how disabled people keep their daily life. So South non disabled people say 'there convenient facilities. I cannot understand why they do like this.' Nice kind quiet peaceful demonstrations have been happening forever. Nothing has been done to solve this very important issue. Sometimes the only way to get people to change the system is by disruption. Yes, certain people will be upset because they only care about themselves. You must understand, this is a cry for help. These people are desperate. Some people may be upset and do nothing. But others who will also look will notice and see that these people are needing help. And they will support them. A protest for disabled people is not the same as a protest for a violent terrorist group. It is a protest for your friends and neighbors. It is a protest for your future. Please see the bigger picture.

Good. Fine them heavily. Look at what we’ve done here with our underground system. The cost of lifts and ramps etc is obscene. There aren’t even any disabled people using them! They should give them free taxi fares instead. This culture of protest should be stopped.
Why should the citizens be subject to the protest then? What did they do wrong with the inacessibility in the subway and why did you exclude the fact that the delay not only made innocent people late for their daily commute but also late to be her side of one student's grand mother while she is in critical condition in the hospital. If they thought it would make people more focused on the issue then they are wrong. They should have protested in more respectful to others. They've been protesting on for 13 whole months by now. While some of their demands are something this government needs to work on, quite a few are already achieved or are merely for the organisation's own benefits. For example, 93.6% metro stations in Seoul are independently accessible for the disabled with elevators and all - how would those protesters been protesting in the platforms otherwise. Also, it is legally mandatory for all retiring busses to be replaced by low-floor busses accessible by the disabled, and the number is at 74.8% in Seoul. To demand a newly operational bus to be retired to achieve the arbitrary 100% would be anything but waste, which is something that the head of SADD (Solidarity Against Disability Discrimination) acknowledged. As of 2023 January, what are their main goals now? Increase funds for promoting disabled people to live outside disabled persons' welfare centres. They claim that this will grant more independence for the disabled and all but, oh well. The SADD was found out to have forcibly evicted persons with developmental disabilities, manipulating their consent and locking them up in provided housing and extorting the government subsidies in 2022. This is why the SADD is out protesting again, just after the 2023 budget that doubled the funds for disability welfare has been released, as their wishes for increased funding on promoting disabled people to live outside welfare facilities and subsidies had been unfulfilled.

Yes, direct action protest are a form of violence. They disrupt your life, cause you to lose time. But these people have been oppressed by the violence of inaction their entire lives, they are denied the freedom that many other nations have decided is their right to have same as everybody else. I was appalled by the street level conditions! There are zero steps required from street to sidewalk or to enter any public/commercial building in the United States. South Korea can do it, too, if there is only the recognition that the disabled are people, too. I'm almost 100% confident that there is a social bias in South Korea that sees them as subhuman, somehow blaming them for their condition, and wishing them to "just stay home" as one voice in the video stated.
Shame on the subway bosses & anyone who supports them!
As a South Korean, I think that the point of this news is absolutely distorted. Most Korean people including me do support the expansion of the budget for disabilities and their rights, but not this protest. As My country is very small but has many population, there are so many people on the subway on rush-hour and they protest and 'disrupt' on that time. This is why the organization is being blamed by most South Korean people not only by the old, conservative men but also the young and the supporters of the Democratic party since the protest has started under the progressive government. They are not improving the rights and the social awareness of the disabilities. They are worsening them.
