South Kobble Creek

South Kobble Creek.
The southern branch of Kobble Creek.
I venture off to try and find the remotest bush camp in the D-Aguilar National Park.
I probably took the hardest route and was completely depleted by the time I reached the spot where the camp was supposed to be.I was pretty sure that I was close but I was truly exhausted and after searching for over an hour for any slight indication or trail that may lead me to it,
I eventually gave up and just set up my tent beside the creek.
There had been campers there only recently as there was a makeshift fire ring and a small amount of rubbish. plenty of Mozzies so I was glad I took a Mozzie coil with me, which worked a charm. I was a little disappointed I didn't find the actual campsite .maybe someone could enlighten me as my GPS said it was up high on a ledge 40 to 50 feet above Creek on the southside. I could not find any access leading up that way.
This trip was extremely difficult, but for me at 60 years of age, well worth the hard yakka.
cheers Gizmo

Hello, again Wayne. I have been studying this route again after not finding it but being so close. I have found 3 different long/ latitude points. ? There is another utube video BUT.the campsite on it does not look correct! my best bet now is the picture on the National parks website. as I have been down on the creek surely I could find this spot, as I am thinking that it just may have been further westwards up the creek and I did not search there. cos I clearly had directions that it was situated 400mtrs past musket junction (where I was at). If you look at this pic it clearly shows a signpost at creek level, pointing to camp. must be overgrown now but I reckon with this photo I got a better chance next time. I would also be interested in seeing what grid reference you have also? here are my long latitude co ords 1st is clearly wrong ..-27.28570406, 152.776584 this one is where I figured it was.....-27.286545, 152.786691 this was yet another...-27.284871, 152.788884 as you can see...all very different, which kinda sucks. www.dropbox.com/s/lko9ce880l2a4o7/d.jpg?dl=0

Oh, so close! You’ve been talking about reaching that bush camp for a while now. South Kobble creek looks beautiful. Love that you have a drone now, it really captures the terrain and atmosphere. Another enjoyable adventure.

Yeah, mate. it was unbelievably hard to reach with a big heavy pack. It was a lot harder than I ever expected but I am sure there must be an easier route. If the camp was in fact atop that cliff it seems to me that should not be called south Kobble creek, but south Kobble plateau or something. I really couldn't justify trying to ascend such a steep climb only to find it isn't there either. maybe if I ever get fitter then maybe I will attempt a different route one day.😀

I am interested in finding this bush camp at some point as well. Can it be approached more easily from the north-east as openstreetmaps suggests there is a path there. I took a group through from the east side up Middle Kobble Creek yesterday (including up the rather imposing rock walls near the Middle Kobble bush camp - out came the rope!) and out via North Kobble creek, and I am fascinated by how the South Kobble area might be different.

yeah much easier that way but you would have to traverse through some private properties I'd imagine ?

@@GizmosBushEscapes I was on a walk two weeks ago, Heartbreak Ridge and rock hop up (left branch) South Kobble Creek. The walk leader said where Heartbreak Ridge meets South Kobble Creek, the remote campsite is up the right side of the creek by following it. But Heartbreak Ridge is incredibly steep, I would hate to do it with a heavy pack.

@Darren Hepe yeah Darren .it would be a whole lot easier without 40lbs on your back. 😆

Your loss of the tripod, that's like when I hiked the stretcher track from the Stinson wreck. I lost my whole camera the vines were so bad. And you'd never believe my luck, another hiker found it two weeks later, used my photo off it to track me down via facebook and returned it. And it still works!!! After two weeks on the top of Lamington plateau in the rain. I never found the external microphone though. Looks like a beautiful hike you did, drone shots really make it don't they.

Nice video Gizmo. Have you got a topographic map of South Kobble? Using a grid reference and compass is another way to find landmarks too but you probably already know that. Just saying because you couldn't find the bush camp. I think I have the grid reference in one of my bushwalking in South East Queensland books.

Mate I was so so spent by the time I reached the end that the grid reference as it showed was so un attainable for me to try to reach cos I simply had zero energy left to climb that ridge with my 40lb pack especially if it wasn't there.and I have been reading all sorts of info about this site for years with each being slightly different in their positioning of the camp.i figured the plot I had was the most correct one as no body has ever disputed it. I was just too tired and needed to rest up.I will go back again one day as there is supposedly a trail to it on the south side.but who knows.its probably a lot easier without a huge pack on though. Cheers
