South Georgia Farmer Raises Millions Of Worms
A farmer in Southeast Georgia has found himself responsible for the care of around thirty million creatures, which live on about three acres of land near Douglas. Jack Brantley is raising worms. Lots and lots of worms. Denny Moore has the story.

worm castings is like gold to a farmer and this was a great man doing a great job with worms.--Charlie Baker for Maggies Herb Farm St.Augustine,FL
Worm castings is like BLACK GOLD! There is nothing more rich than this material to grow your crops or annuals in! I sure hope people learn about this because there are a lot of fellas trying to start producing worm castings in massive quantities and they're losing everything because people simply don't know the value of the castings, increase in yield, massive increase in fruiting size, etc.

Excellent.
My cousin ran a worm farm near Savannah and there was an old movie from the 70s called SQUIRM about a small Georgia town overrun with worms after a storm that was filmed in nearby Port Wentworth

It depends on a lot of things really, but I'd say if you already had the proper worm food already lined up and ready to go, worms will eat their weight every day, depending on what it is you are giving them, like 2-6 months before you get something that is consistent. And they need a bit to reproduce anyway. You can be more efficient about it by having different ages of worms and tracking their reproduction cycles. But if you have the capital to buy a lot of worms at once and have everything ready to go, you could scale well. Worms also are really good at limiting their growth so they won't overgrow by any means.
How can you contact him? I live in Jacksonville, Fl. Looking to pic up some worms when I travel to Atlanta and back. Wanting to add more worms to my worm bin.
Hello, I have one question. How is it from rodents - rats ... do not you have a problem with that? Does not go to the compost for food? Thanks for the information
Hi there Jack I hope your not too busy to answer me. I'm in Australia but I'm financing a goat farm in the Philippines and assisting a family who have about 3 hectares of land. At the moment we have about 10 goats and about 50 chickens and a couple of pigs. Feeding animals is the main cost and so I have hit upon the idea of a food chain where worms provide food for the chickens. We have a raised goathouse and chicken house and the manuer collects underneath. If we make a worm farm in long rows will we be able to feed the worms with a soil/manuer mix? Because if we can do that we will feed the worms and bugs in the soil to the chickens for egg and meat production. The chickens are at the bottom end of the food chain and our future pigs will be at the top of it and this is what I think of as sustainable farming. I hope you get to read this and think seriously about it, I have a lot of photos of our goats and chickens so far I would like to email you. I dont know of anyone else doing this but if its successful it would make very interesting reading in a book.

fact is worms can be invasive to non native plants. If you get worms shipped from other states or countries well just remember the great lakes are now invaded by foreign fish called a "Asian carp" these escaped from a fish farm and are now a very serious issue with the great lakes.
