It is so cool that after 12 years, 3 Grammy’s, literal Billions of KZread views, multi-platinum albums, sold out shows worldwide, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, that because of the niche nature of acapella, people are always discovering them for the first time! So welcome to PTX! It’s a deep rabbit hole full of covers, original music, Christmas music, collaborations, and solo work by the members who are all headliner-worthy. This is why Pentaholics love KZread reactors, because discovering them and how fantastic they are is a journey worth following.

This group is considered to be the top acapella group in the world. Tehy all sing and play instruments. Their vocal percussionist, Kevin is a tenor and is classical on the cello aND SAXOPHONE. HE WILL SOMETIMES PLAY THE CELL AND BEAT BOX AT THE SAME TIME. iF ANY INSTRUMENTS ARE USE, YOU WEILL SEE THEM. fOR A BETTER ASSESSMENT OF THEIR VOICES, TRY, Hallelujah! They all have a wide range in their vocal ability. They sing evrythin thin fro pop to gospel.

I noticed that you did a reaction to Dolly Parton's original song, "Jolene"~ Well, guess what?! Pentatonix actually got to do that song with Dolly and ended up winning a Grammy for it; it was so good! Dolly's so amazing & utterly adorable anyway.. Pentatonix wanted to just do back up harmony for her while she sang, they were just so thrilled to have the chance to meet her & record with her..but she insisted that they have more of a singing part than that - who can say "no" to Dolly, lol!😊👍🩷 I know you would really enjoy doing a reaction to it; I hope you check it out. Take care, from a new subscriber.😉

Now that you've opened the PTX bag, you'll need to keep looking at their work. One of my faves is a Daft Punk Medley that they recorded early in their career. I believe they won a Grammy for it, and I believe they recorded the video in one of their home closets for $400. You really can't go wrong with Pentatonix!

  • @margretrosenberg420

The audio was recorded in a closet, for the good acoustics. They had a place arranged where they were going to shoot the video but it fell through at the last minute so they got some black bed sheets and set up a sort of booth in one of their kitchens, where they recorded the video. Yes, their budget was around $400. And it was their first Grammy winner.

Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), (not in this video) true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZread, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZread videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZread), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZread, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Faeries, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with (tuning) pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

Pentatonix is just FANTABULOUS!!!! They were just on The Masked Singer last season. They of course were awesome but were beaten out by what I feel like weren't great song choices but of course they had music accompaniment which helped to disguise who they are but when you know them, you know them. When contestants get revealed they sing one final song so you should check that out. If I put the link it will get deleted but this is what you need to search..."California Roll aka PENTATONIX Comes 3rd In The Masked Singer 2023 Last Performance - CREEP". It might've had backing music and a light show but they KILLED IT!!!! Sadly it was a shortened version of the song but still...amazing!!!

The original of "Sound of Silence" was by US folk duo Simon and Garfunkel in 1964. But there is a famous recent cover of it by Disturbed, particularly a legendary live version he did on the Conan TV show in 2019. This 2019 Pentatonix cover has elements of both versions.

I've been watching your reactions to US cultural and food videos for a while and couldn't believe when this popped up. I've followed Pentatonix for over 10 years, and the positive energy that comes across in their videos helped get me through the worst of the pandemic. They have dozens of official and live videos and even more great songs that only have audio available. Warning: their label blocks videos aggressively. Most Pentatonix reactors get around that by altering the video: usually by increasing the transparency and overlaying a graphic or text.

Pick any song from their catalog, even one that you didn't care for the original version, and I promise you, you will love it because they don't do "Covers", they do upgrades but always respecting the original. Here are a few so that you can get a feel for their abilities (Official Videos). 1. "Daft Punk" - First Grammy win. 2. "Bohemian Rhapsody" - Queen Cover. 3. "Gold" - Kiera Cover 4. "Love Again" - an original. 5. "Hallelujah" - Leonard Cohen Cover. 6. "Imagine" John Lennon Cover. Then check out any of these or others live.

Welcome aboard the SS Pentatonix. You will find there are many stops along this cruise. This the OG of acapella groups, and all other current acapella groups can thank these people for making this ,"dead" genre big again. They are by far most popular with over 5 billion views on youtube, most decorated with 3 grammys and many more nominations including this past year, by far the most diverse both in who they are and represent, but also in the genres they cover. From pop to classical, from rap to edm, from country to r & b, christmas to jazz. Theyve done duets with superstars like stevie wonder to dolly parton (which they won a grammy for) and got shout outs from artists they covered like paul simon and brian may of queen. May i suggest for more listens to more of their early work to start with like bohemian rhapsody, dance of the sugar plum fairy, and daft punk with watching official video first followed by the private performance version where theres no microphones or mixing, just them and their voices proving its them and not studio trickery. Sugar plum fairy and daft punk they won grammys for. Also check out imagine where they cover john Lennons iconic song. Sit back and enjoy!

They are so very talented & can sing any kind of music too. The guy on the end with the white jacket, was Matt, the newest member. The other four have been in the group since the beginning. If you watch more videos like 'Hallelujah' you will see Avi, who Matt replaced. The guy on the other end that was as high or higher than Kirstey, the beautiful gal. In songs like 'Hallelujah' Mitch sings super high & people are super shocked. They call it being 'Mitch Slapped'. My #1 fav by these guys is 'Mary did you know' (and Kevin 'the percussionist/beat boxer) sings in it. 'Bohemian rhapsody' is amazing too. The way they can sound so good with no real music is like magic or something. Mitch does an amazing job on that one. I think he channeled Freddie Mercury.

To check out their versatility, take a look at their Daft Punk medley (which won them their first Grammy), their cover of John Lennon’s Imagine (official video for impact), Bohemian Rhapsody, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (second Grammy) and then maybe their ‘90s Dance Medley. On the original front, try Sing, Coffee in Bed and Anchor. Or just pick any title that catches your eye, they are all good. You’ll notice one change in the line-up. Bass singer Matt Sallee, shown here on the left in the white jacket, replaced original bass Avi Kaplan in 2017. That’s been the only change. Tall blond guy is Scott Hoying-Baritone; the girl is Kirsten Maldonado-Mezzo-Soprano; the guy with the hat is Mitch Grassi-Counter-Tenor; the guy with the white jacket is Matt Sallee-Basso-Profundo; the guy beatboxing is Kevin Olusola, who is also a Tenor, and a Cellist, and Cellist-Beatboxer. Scott, Kirsten, and Mitch went to high school together in Arlington, TX (between Dallas and Ft. Worth, TX). After graduation, they all went to different colleges and majored in Music. They all got back together for a competition called "Sing-Off" but needed 5 per group to compete. The other two came to the group as referrals. And yes, this is an Acapella group.

Their live performances usually equal or surpass the official vids. Scott always adds fab runs. Kevin and Matt have a live synergy that is mind boggling. First five years had a diff bass - a basso profundo. So he was utilized differently. They always use each others strengths and soar. It’s a simple cover, but I love Come Along. Ps, sometimes Kevin cello boxes or just classical cellos the goosebumps out of you.

And Kirstie is always a favorite, with her beautiful, powerful, female voice, which is fantastic alone, but also blends perfectly with the others. A gorgeous clear voice, with beautiful rifts, and runs, and beautiful powerful whistle notes.

"Sound of Silence" is a Simon and Garfunkel song. Yes, Pentatonis is a cappella (for the most part). The members of Pentatonix, in this video: • First singer, tall blond guy: Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. In describing a man's vocal range, "lyric" means that his actual range exceeds his nominal range. Scott's lowest notes are somewhere in the middle of a normal bass range but his upper notes are near the top of the tenor range. Probably about 5 or 6 octaves. When the bass solos Scott takes over the bass harmony line. • Second singer, slim guy to the right of Scott (our right, not Scott's): Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), contratenor. Mitch is singing lower than he prefers in this song. He is known for his ethereal high vocals, and switches seamlessly between chest voice, mixed voice, head voice, and falsetto. He has a range of just over 6 octaves. • Third singer, black guy in a white jacket: Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), lyric bass. Matt is both the newest and the youngest member of Pentatonix, having replaced their original bass in late 2017 (we'll get to him later), and bass voices improve with age. This video is about 4 years old and doesn't do justice to Matt's current range, which seems to be growing on a daily basis. Given what I've heard from him lately I'd say that he isn't QUITE down to basso profundo yet (though I expect he will be within a year or two), but his highest notes are very near the top of a tenor range. • Fourth singer, the only woman in Pentatonix: Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, mezzo soprano. Mezzo is the lowest soprano range, just above alto, and Kirstie is classified as mezzo because that is (or perhaps was) her preferred range. In the real world, however, Kirstie sings anywhere from a low alto through coloratura soprano, the highest soprano range, and her whistle notes are off the chart. Lately Pentatonix has begun referring to her as an alto-soprano. • The fifth member of Pentatonix is Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth) beatboxer extraordinaire. There may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. We don't get to hear Kevin sing as often as we'd like because he's generally too busy being the entire percussion section, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally descends to the uppermost reaches of a baritone range. He's also known for the beauty of his falsetto, which may go higher than Mitch can. Kevin has perfect pitch. He's been trained since childhood on piano, saxophone, and cello. When he was a teenager he performed at Carnegie Hall twice, once on the saxophone and once on the cello. He beatboxes while playing the cello, which he refers to as "celloboxing." He has a premed degree from Yale and had already been accepted to Yale Medical School when he gave up his dream of becoming a surgeon to pursue his dream of becoming a professional musician instead. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, German, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs the whole planet seems like a brighter place. Not in this video: • Pentatonix's original bass was Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan; you'll see him in earlier videos. Avi is another lyric bass. He's an operatically trained basso profundo - his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances - but his range extends to somewhere in the middle of a normal tenor range. He found it necessary to leave Pentatonix in 2017 for personal reasons but has since gone on to have a very successful solo career. I strongly recommend subscribing to his KZread channel, which you can find here: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic
