There's been a meme running around for years that you can probably Google up, "Britain conquered half the world for spices... and then refused to use them." There's a whole lota truth in that.

You can get all the spices you need online. Louisiana brand crawfish boil is a great way to start, there's no need to make your own. It's a powder and they have a liquid concentrate that helps kick it up a notch. You want to really over season the water at first, the best crawfish come out in later batches like the 3rd and beyond. Oh...he boiled the crawfish way longer than necessary, this will make them tough. All you need is 2 or 3 minutes at a boil, then turn the heat off and let em sit for around ten minutes. Of course this will vary depending on how many lbs you're doing at a time. The best way is to have two pots of seasoned water, one for boiling and one for soaking. That way you're not waiting for the water to come back to a boil between batches.

Come to Houston at the End of April for the Crawfish Festival. It is a big party in a little town (Old Town Spring) just North of Houston. If you come at the end of February, and the beginning of March you can catch the Houston Rodeo. If you can stay that long get here for the Rodeo, go to Austin for the BBQ, and then head to San Antonio (just 30 minutes from Austin) for the Tex-Mex, and Tacos. Then head back to Houston for the Crawfish Festival. Your taste buds will thank you!

We live in the middle of the country. The Gulf of Mexico is a solid 12 hour drive from here. My nephew absolutely loves Crawfish Boils. Every year for his birthday, which thankfully falls during the summer, he and a friend of his fly down to New Orleans, pick up a couple of cases of Crawfish and bring it back for his birthday. He boils 'em up in his backyard, then we do a huge picnic. Beer, family, friends and a Boil. There's nothing finer.

They used to have a festival every year in Birmingham, Alabama, where they served around 50k people crawfish boil while rock bands were playing on stage, bands/artists like Alice in Chains, Sublime, Snoop Dogg. Sadly they stopped it after 2013 but it was awesome while it lasted. Also, one of my first girlfriends, back in the late 80's, grew up in Louisiana and they often had a crab boil at her parents house. Don't know if I miss her or the food more.

If it makes you feel any better, I've lived in the U.S. for 36 years now and still haven't had the chance to try a crawfish boil. That's not to say I don't travel around the country and try as much as I can, but damn, there's just too much stuff out there to taste and one vacation is likely to set you back a few thousand. Edit: That said, it's always a joy to visit an area and spend the whole week gorging on whatever they specialize in. One of my favorite vacations ever was to a little area in florida where I just ate fresh-caught fish every day--literally just whatever the fisherman were catching that morning. Usually smothered in some combination of melted butter, capers, and olives. It was divine.

I never used to eat any kind of crustaceans (crab, lobster, crawfish, shrimp). Then I lived in New Orleans for a few years and got to like them. I miss having Cajun friends. When you'd go to their house and open the refrigerator there were usually some soft shell crabs or crawfish crawling around in there. Or you'd go to the grocery store in season and there were big tubs of live crawfish in the seafood aisle.

I'm from Texas, but have been fortunate enough to have had several true Cajun boils. Seasoning is key.... and good ingredients. He didn't mention it in his video, but I would pick out any dead crayfish (we call them crawdads). My/our experience making boils here is that there always seem to be a few that are dead, but if you have a good source for them, this is kept to a minimum. We typically do multiple pots, to give options of less spice, and even one that uses more sausages since some of the kids and other family don't like seafood. It's blasphemy to me (and many of us), but these folks do seem to enjoy their pot with the different potatoes and the multiple types of sausage we use (with the corn). We cook them outside in a small fire pit/trench that we use an elongated grill top, and they all cook at the same time. We usually also have them with rice, red beans, nad cornbread.... with sweet sun tea and beer. That family style dining is the way to go. Despite how this looks, making a boil really is one of the easier meals regarding cooking and prep. It's harder peeling the shrimp and crawdads to eat them than any other part of it.

You should try making your own version of Mexican street corn- you can even use that type of seasoned butter he made in the video. The corn should be saturated though so you can barely even tell it’s a corn cob. Look up some pictures and some recipes and see if you can get similar spices, and add that to some of your regular dinners and you’ll be happy!

Most people would not cook with this pot indoors. There’s a propane burner that is usually included. The latest price I have seen for this pot, etc. is $160-180. Most seafood boils are then dumped on a picnic table for all to demolish. Y’all need to go to Texas and/ Louisiana for this good food. 😜

There is a difference between shrimp and prawns. Here in America we have both Shrimp and Prawn available. Shrimps do not have claws on their body while prawns does. Shrimps go from as little as 3mm in size to as 9 inches in size. Prawn go from 2 inches to 8 inches in size. Also Shrimps mostly appear in North and South America while Prawns are essentially everywhere. Hope this clears any confusion

Well as a south Louisiana guy that sells seafood and books all the time , I don't see why people pour sauce, seasoning or butter directly on the outside of crawfish or crab . it makes ZERO sense bc you are not eating the shell. If you know how to boil then you don't need all of that nonsense. Now having a butter or sauce to dip after you've got the meat out I 100% understand bc people like different spice levels and flavors plus having something for the potatoes or whatever else is in your boil.

I can easily go through 16 lbs myself but they say you should go with 2 to 3 lbs per person. Oh...those crawfish are way to small, they look like field run which are the first batches of the season, waste of time. Sounds like you might be best off going to Texas first on your trip. You get the BBQ,the crawfish,Tex-Mex and mexican food all in one state. Just remember,if you want to try crawfish make sure you come when they're in season which is November through July. Josh is a great chef but he's from TEXAS. Normally you get the veg sausage and crawfish. You are correct a crawfish boil is 40 pounds crawfish potatoes corn poured over a large folding table with you and your buddies standing around it with cold beers socializing. Broccoli absorbs the spice much better and will blow your mind. Cauliflower has no taste, so it takes only the spices you use. Corn is next. The sausage should be Cajun Boudin, which is a rice and blood sausage with pork and smooth and wonderful. Finally, the shrimp should be what is in season in the marshes. Early Summer is white shrimp and late Summer is Brown shrimp. Cra b is fresh Blue crab caught off the dock in the back yard. Sorry, I forgot everyone does not live on a canal in Galveston Bay.

That dude don't know how to open crab legs or how to eat seafood. Us Marylanders know about seafood. I grew up catching crabs ,fish, clams and eating oysters.

This dude is a rookie,he doesn't even peel the crawfish properly. You shouldn't spend more than 5 seconds per crawfish. Toss this recipe.

No you dont. Any state that borders Louisiana always has Cajuns in them. When the Hurricane tore up Louisiana I swear half your state moved to Houston. Hell, you cant swing a dead cat without hitting a crawfish boil around here.

@@myibook141 Crawfish are crawfish. In fact I ordered 100 lbs from Louisiana and while they were nice sized they tasted like dead fish. There's plenty of crawfish in Texas and they dont taste like dead fish.

@@TrulyUnfortunate you say crawfish are crawfish but then proceed to tell me crawfish are different.. 😂.. And taste like dead huh? Plenty in Texas huh? Guess that’s why Louisiana is known for them right? Just quit it dude

@@myibook141 That like saying snapper taste different off the coast of Texas than Louisiana. I've eaten crawfish from both states and other than the dead fish taste from those oh so good Louisiana crawfish they all taste the same. I'd say those Louisiana crawfish were fed nothing but dead fish in a crawfish farm. And not from the Basin.

This is not a crawfish boil. Crawfish are NEVER cooked inside !!!! It's always an outdoor party .... with as much cold beer and great music as crawfish ! I doubt the little fellow in the video has ever been to a real crawfish boil.
