South African Garratts

The cloud of steam on the South African horizon belonged to the narrow gauge Garratt locomotives. Serving the industrial railways of South Africa in the 1990s, these articulated locomotives were hard workers. This 1995 trip on a special steam excursion records the Garratts on several railways, including a two and one-half foot gauge line. Not long after our trip, the Garratts were replaced by diesels.

    Thank you for the gauge correction of the two foot narrow gauge . Correct. It is two Feet exactly!

    The timber train on the 2 foot gauge was a special, in normal service a single garratt would handle a 12 car train with ease on the mainly downhill trip to the coastal town of Port Shepstone. I travelled this line in 1994, but since the line had closed and is in a very detoriated state now, but luckily there are a few other places to enjoy these NG/G16 Garratts, of which several outside SA which is good, as the current SA isn't a good place for railway preservation anymore. The only safe place is Sandstone Estates, where these loco's are relatively out of reach for metal thieves, which ravaged many sites and steam locomotives. The best place to enjoy them is the Welsh Highland Railway in the UK, which is an almost 30 mile steam railway, actually almost completely rebuild on mostly original track bed, some of it a former standard gauge line. There have also some Cape Gauge 3'6" locomotives been exported to NZ with the aim to run them on the mainline in the future, once they are restored and adapted to the somewhat smaller NZ loading gauge they should be able to run on the North Island Main Trunk.

    Any narrow gauge garratts left in S.A.? Wanted for daily 50 minute shuttles between Lebrina and Wyena. Picking up and setting down picnicers, campers and railtrailers at Denison Gorge Recreational camp reserves. The Lone Star Railway and Recreational hub.

    Several were purchased by the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways in England and are in use today!
