South Africa's Afrikaner people: Past, present, and future

The architects of the apartheid system were the Afrikaner people. They've been in the country for hundreds of years, though, and their history is a rich one. So, where do they fit into a South Africa that's been free for more than two decades? Lindy Mtongana has more

The anglo-boer war is what caused so many of today's problems in south africa. The afrikaners had two small republics, the zulus had their kingdom, the brits had the cape colony and natal. Then the British, after bringing total war, scorched earth and concentration camps in order to win that war, forced everyone into a union with the whole of SA and then the brits basically left the mess of that conflict for the Afrikaners to deal with. What could anyone have done in that situation?

Unfortunately not true. Verwoerd was born in the Netherlands but moved to South Africa at the age of 2. So nice try. If you still don’t understand - that makes him a first generation Afrikaaner. He grew up Afrikaaner and went to Stellenbosch University. Furthermore, he was a member of the National Party - Apartheid was implemented under this party and not under Verwoerd. People confuse the architects with implementation but it infact comes from the fact that Verwoerd was an academic that believed all humans have equal capability, he actually argued that environment played a major factor in the development of people. He was an Afrikaaner who believed that Afrikaaner’s should take care of themselves first.

As a person who has interacted with different race groups in SA for a lot of my life, including in smaller towns/cities, where the ethos of the Group Areas Act was unconsciously entrenched right up to 2016; my understanding of South Africa and South Africans is that the masses have complete understanding, tolerance, respect and empathy for each other in everyday life. The problem is that, whether it's the private sector, public sector or the government as a whole; it's the leadership of those 3, who have power and influence, that continue to drive the racial agenda that filters down. This is where only people of certain race groups are employed in leadership roles of those 3 pillars, so the other racial groups feel alienated; or where politicians make blanket statements about other race groups because it suits their narrative to remain relevant to their respective groups of followers/supporters. This conduct gets media attention and influences the neutrals, but on the whole, it genuinely doesn't affect the way that most South Africans view their neighbours, co-workers, friends and even family members of different races - but we don't see the interaction of mixed races on a daily basis in the media spotlight because it's everyday life, which will get boring very quickly.

South Africa should forget about their past in order to build their country s future. They should come together as one and contribute their individual skills . Ahmad Rajab, you cannot just forget the past, in the same way the holocaust cannot be forgotten, however the Africans should look to the future and the Europeans must recognize the suffering and pain apartheid caused and shouldn't trivialize and dismiss all the injustices, that way it will help black South Africans to move on. Many Africans are still angry and resentful due to European South Africans being unrepentant, by whites acknowledging the hurt the bitterness will be reduced. Reconciliation is important.

There are just too many lies here to respond to, but I will address the main ones. The Afrikaners did not go on the Great Trek. The Boer people of the northeastern Cape frontier went on the Great Trek. The Cape Dutch Afrikaners in fact RIDICULED the Boers fro going on the Great Trek & called them heretics. The Dutch Reformed Church even FORBADE them from going on the Great Trek. The Cape Dutch of the south western Cape were pro Colonial while the Boer people of the northeastern Cape frontier were historically anti-colonial & got started as a people on the Cape frontier out of an anti-colonial sentiment. The Vootrekker Monument was not built "to commemorate" the trek as much as it was really built as part of a program to co-opt the marginalized Boer people [ who are outnumbered by the Cape Dutch ] & to prevent them from wanting to restore their old Boer Republics. The term " White South African" is yet another misnomer because the Boer people existed LONG before South Africa & also before the formal arrival of the Colonial powers & even before the political notion of a supposed "White" population. The one dimensional notion that a diverse population group can be named after a colour is an obtuse categorization.

Cheesycurve 54, I wouldn't like it the white European population decreases again. And you're right, not only are most whites not economically able to leave, but also the majority of them, their families have lived in South Africa for generations. Last of all, not all Afrikaners supported apartheid. And I think by the late 1980s, many Afrikaners were switching to voting for the Democratic party in the 1989 general election, including a Afrikaner majority suburb of Johannesburg named Linden, where the Democratic party won the by election in 1989. White South Africans overall by the 1980s, were against the continuation of apartheid, particularly younger people, thus the majority of the over-20 year old electorate in the 1987 election did not vote the anti apartheid Progressive Federal Party. Although I am aware that the 1983 referendum on the creation of representative houses for Indians and Coloureds shows the majority of whites favoured power sharing with over racial groups.

Blacks talk English, are educated, dressed in native-English dresses, and do not look tribal at all. As the trainer class, the whites could be allowed the right to keep some private space in the form of beaches and schools to retain and preserve their quality systems. It would only be a show of expressing gratitude to all the quality enhancement that the Whites had given (not all whites from CEurope). It might be good and healthy to allow the whites to have their own beaches and schools. If they do not feel insecure, they will continue to share their quality. However, if they are pushed out, they will leave today or tomorrow. Then the blacks will go under the blacks. How many blacks would love that? Once the black nation collapses, the Asians will takeover. Asian slavery is a totally different experience.

Haiti is a dump. So much for your revolution.

Yes. You can't have a full revolution without bloodshed. Right now there are still Africans that still see Europeans as Gods. We destroy that physiological block by winning our freedom in Jamaica up close and personal with guns and machetes.

i dont think it is that whites dont want to interact with Blacks for example, i work in the middle of a South African city, i mostly see african people around me during my work hours and talk and work with them the only problem is when you start walking the streets around my work place, you have to be aware what is around you, people get mugged and crime is a big problem, i dont think alot of white people feel very safe in a south african township or certain rural areas if we had less crime in south african cities, i am sure people of all races wont be scared to move around in all areas, at the moment it is not going to happen
