South Africa elections: Mandela's ANC expected to suffer historic setback | DW News Africa Special
South Africa's general election is set for May 29. There is a strong sense here that the result will be a game changer. The African National Congress has ruled for 30 years, but now it's facing its toughest electoral fight yet. A growing number of South Africans are dissatisfied with the state the country is in and they blame the ANC: the key actor in bringing about South Africa's freedom after dark years of oppressive white minority rule.

ANC inherited power from the National Party in 1994. They treated it as a spoil of war, which it was to a great extent. The leadership was more concerned with securing the benefits of the new order for themselves than bettering the nation as a whole.

Everything went wrong when the ANC elected Zuma. The latter ascended to the highest office on the back of rape and 330 corruption charges. He single handedly hollowed up SARS, all parastals, NPA, chapter 9 institutions, law enforcement agencies and the intelligency.

The ANC were the driving force behind liberating South Africa from apartheid. Nelson Mandela was one of the most impressive leaders in world history. But it's not good for any country to have the same political party in charge all the time. That's something that is far from unique to South Africa. And often times periods in oppostion can rejuvenate parties that have grown stale in government.
@Patmorgan235Us

Is there any country more obsessed with looking back in a comparative way at its watershed moment than South Africa? Do Indians constantly obsess over what Indians have accomplished since 1947? Do Ghanaians constantly whine about how their current situation is result of colonialism 60 years after the fact?
This election in SA will go down to the wire! The ANC looks set to lose its absolute majority nationally and in multiple provinces, opening the door for a coalition government. However the experience of coalition governments in Europe shows that even more dysfunction awaits SA if this happens.
I mean it's really sad that such a big proportion of South Africa's population does not have access to the good life and that missmanagement and corruption are partly to blame, however even if the ANC had a better track record a ruling party falling below 50% after 30 years in power was just to be expected in the context of political normalization.
16:45 "of all the parties only the EFF is expected to grow". Hogwash. The EFF will provably remain where it is and the DA will grow most like by several points. Then the PA and parties formed in the last 2 years are also expected to grow / explode on the scene.
The rise mzansi gentleman has a good head on his shoulders
The housing issues in western cape are a victim of its own success. Becausee conditions are better there , people move there, because they move there it puts pressure on the housing systems and services. Western cape also urgently needs to address its water situation.
Mbete is pro ANC political analyst and not impartial. She didn’t say how ANC over years pushed very harmful for businesses and jobs creation policies through Parliament, destroying private property rights and therefore human rights. Western countries pointed that out to ANC and became the enemies to dictatorial party in SA. It’d be great for the ANC to become a minority in opposition to reform itself or fade away as irrelevant.

What worries me more than anything is that the policies pushed by the parties are no longer the main focus for the electorate. It's as if we cannot be adults anymore and judge parties on ideas, we are always grandstanding. It's a toxic political atmosphere in SA

ANC did a lot by being open to giving opportunities to those who wants to start businesses. Yes the corruption of money.... I'm unemployed but I started my own business. It was difficult to get financed by banks. I'm getting there slowly but sure. Sometimes we have to appreciate not only criticising. We need Infrastructure development: hospitals, roads, Electricity and manufacturing. From covid to high loadshedding this became a huge setback. DA is a good part, however, perhaps more reforms should be done to attract my vote. I would rather vote for ANC or EFF.
