I actually think this version is pretty good. I really like Rade as Emile and I was happy to see that they included a scene where Nellie meets Emile for the first time. It gave “Some Enchanted Evening” more depth and meaning. I thought Rade’s version was beautiful and moving. Some reviews said it didn’t compare to the previous versions done by opera singers. So what! Every version doesn’t have to be exactly the same. Yes, Glenn Close is an older Nellie but so was Mary Martin. I really didn’t like Mary Martin as Nellie for various reasons. Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Brazzi were very good but why can’t we just enjoy this version without comparing it too much to the 1958 movie or the stage versions. There’s nothing wrong with different interpretations.

Agreed. In fact older Nellie is better.

Rade. What a luscious man. Yum. Shame the video & sound are mismatched about halfway through.

I would love to watch this again, but with the sound and images synchronized. Such a shame as is.

I enjoyed this version of SOUTH PACIFIC. Too bad that there is a sound issue about 1/2 way through. I am not sure really what the age of the Glen Close is suppose to be. As mentioned, Mary Martin was about 40 when she did the part.

Glen Close has to have been the oldest ensign in the history of the US Navy. But I enjoyed this version of South Pacific.

@phyllismarzocchi7434: Well, the war aged her fast! Yes, her casting eliminates this as a viable presentation; she was just too damn old and not much of a voice for a Rodgers and Hammerstein score.

2:06, those three P-39 mock ups were previously used in The Thin Red Line including the airfield since both were filmed in Queensland near Cairns.

I actually saw Mary Martin on Broadway when I was about 4. The movie version has Mitzi Gaynor. I think she is still living.

There is a black and white video of Mary Martin when she performed it in London, on the West End. On youtube. Should not be hard to find. Full show.

@karma8582: You really don’t understand casting, the star system and aging. Mary Martin was 34 when she created SOUTH PACIFIC and it’s likely that Nellie is about 24 but she projected an American exuberance and was vocally resplendent. Unfortunately film is realistic medium and Glenn projected a woman of her agh, about 55, which changes the whole dynamic of the relationship with middle aged Emile. And she wasn’t much of a singer but more importantly the idea that Nellie as a young woman would understand how limited her world was and the world was bigger is lost. Also, Nellie is supposed to be southern from Arkansas and Joe Cable from New Jersey. That explains why she has trouble accepting Emile’s children at first. Cable begins his romance with Liat only to realize that because of her race he can’t marry her. Harry Connick, being southern skews the dram of the piece. I do like the screenplay which is better than the 1958 film, but the 1958 casting is better with the except of John Kerr as Cable who came as a 12 to 14 kid, not much of a romantic interest.

"changes the whole dynamic of the relationship with middle aged Emile." Yes, it changed it for the better. For once Nellie isn't closer to the age of Emile's kids than she is to Emile's. I think she passes easily for forty something, but I'm fine with 55 year old Nellie too. And there's no reason why a middle aged Nellie can't have the same realization about social issues. The war changed a lot of people's minds, young and old. Nellie doesn't have to be Southern to make her racism believable, this was the 1940s. And a middle aged Nellie would have been born around the turn of the century or earlier, making her prejudice even more likely and her change of heart more moving.

Halfway through the film, during the last part of, “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair,” film loses sinc. From that point on, no matter what you do, sound and picture won’t match up. Shame.

This version can't hold a candle to the original 1958 version !! Harry Connif Jr is terrible as Joe Cable. No one can do it as good as John Kerr. The intense chemistry between France Nuyen and John Kerr at their first meeting was so palpable...I do not see the same chemistry between Harry Conic and this girl playing Liat..

I didn’t know about this version, it was fine but not a fan of Glenn Close! She has played so many mean, nutty parts in the past I have trouble taking her as sincere and obviously she doesn’t sing!
