    +Dewayne C Truly, this song is not about feeling invincible. It literally says "Not one for giving up though not invincible I know." This is a pledge of endurance, but at the same time wisely recognizing his own mortal frailty. A true mark of humility. Believe it or not, this song is holy. You're right that it is about rejecting the outside world, but more important than that, rejecting all the hateful, degraded, morally depraved ways (not the Earth itself). Chris is literally doing a Jesus Christ pose, he is positioned so as to look as if he is on a cross. In other words, he's watching the world, and at the same time being sacrificed for it. Until the end of the video, his mind, his spirit, his soul overcomes the world, and destroys it. A lot of parallels to Christ's message.

    ebannaw The way I see it is that he is being fed information by the outside world, until its twisted morals and conventions drive him insane, which leads him to blow up everything. If you wanna see Jesus in there I guess but I don't think that symbolism needs to be invoked. After all this video is an homage to A clockwork orange, a film which questions our sense of morality by asking whether it is good to do evil to evil. In the end, morality is corrupt, the world is a contradiction and Chris is a big ol nihilist like me lol.

    @@SholaMind21He was suffering from bipolar disorder...... Bipolar disorder is a psychological disorder that causes episodes of depression and other episodes of abnormal euphoria. These episodes of euphoria, also called mania or hypomania, are important in diagnosing the illness based on their severity or whether symptoms of psychosis are evident. Episodes of abnormal euphoria differ from the feeling of joy under normal circumstances. In a medical condition, a person experiences abnormal activity, happiness and irritation. It can also sometimes lead a person to commit acts that are reckless, irresponsible, or have ill-considered consequences. The need for sleep is reduced during manic episodes; While affected individuals may experience symptoms such as crying spells, a gloomy outlook on life, and avoidance of meeting others during episodes of depression. The risk of suicide in patients with bipolar disorder remains high, at over 6%, and at the same time, cases of self-harm can also occur in approximately 30-40% of cases. Other psychiatric disorders such as anxiety disorder or substance use disorder may be associated with bipolar disorder.

This song got me through the three months of her dying and the three months after she was gone. There's no lesson here, just a thanks to the band that helped me through those moments with this incredible song.

    it seems that there was a great cost for the depth, honesty and beauty in the intensity and caliber of music and artistry in much of the 90s. I am so grateful to the many musicians who bled their soul in their music. The courage it takes to share your darkest secrets with the world.

  • @patrickniehus3132

    @patrickniehus3132

    Very well said. A music that bares the soul is by definition a dangerous music - dangerous to listen to, and certainly dangerous to write, if you're of a certain self-destructive and self-loathing disposition, as Chris was (and this is something I know more than a little about, let's just leave it at that)....one of the reasons I love 'grunge', whatever the hell that was supposed to be, is because it is earnest, in a business that doesn't encourage honesty and commitment to being oneself. This music wasn't afraid to be abrasive, passionate and deep. To be itself. You gotta respect that, and even more now, when music has devolved into bland and oppressive beat-heavy, intelligence-lite pap made by any fool with a laptop.....

    Day 3: Still crying. But at least I'm not binge listening to Emerson, Lake and Palmer anymore. ELP got me off Bowie when Keith Emerson died, then Prince got me off both. Then there was Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen mixed in there too.(but they were more expected). Then back to ELP when Greg Lake died to bookend a horrible year. Then John Wetton, which returned back into prog rock exclusively since February. But Chris (whom I met once while living in Seattle) is devastation. Like Greg Lake, Chris Cornell's voice and lyrics were a touchstone that kept me ALIVE through very difficult times. All my sages are leaving this plane. Long live Eddie Vedder, PLEASE.

    I so agree with you. To be honest, I didn't know how much he had impacted my life until he died. I mean yup, I was in my twenties in the 90s and have followed Chris Cornell from band to band and through solo periods just because he was this great singer. But when I heard of his death i became really emotional about it, which was sort of weird, because I didn't know I liked him so much. I started watching interviews and that led to more interviews and that led to social media posts and pictures and suddenly he just wasn't this incredible singer/musician he was this truly amazing man who was a loving father and husband and devoted family man, who was actually really funny, really honest, and a really great and loyal friend. Everybody that ever knew him loved him and talked really great about him - and that was while he was alive! So when I started seeing people all over the place taking cheap shots at him and using misinformation in such a hurtful and destructive manner I decided "hey, I'm gonna to stick up for Chris Cornell!" Why? Because I think he deserves it and I think his family needs it. Now Granted, I still think the bodyguard is a suspect - but I make no apologies on calling people out or correcting them on information that they are using incorrectly or are not understanding. in fact I will probably do it for the rest of my life - I will be that relative in years to come that everyone is warned at family gatherings to not mention anything about Chris Cornell hanging himself or the investigation because I doubt I will ever be convinced that he killed himself and I know I will always want to stick up for him!

You're doing a disservice to yourself and others taking it out of context. Nothing seem to kill me no matter how hard I try Nothing is closing my eyes Nothing can beat me down for your pain or delight And nothing seems to break me No matter how far I fall nothing can break me at all Not one for giving up though not invincible I know I've givin' everything I need I'd give you everything I own I'd give in if it could at least be ours alone I've given everything I could To blow it to hell and gone Burrow down and Blow up the outside world Someone tried to tell me something Don't let the world bring you down Nothing will do me in before I do myself So save it for your own and the ones you can help Want to make it understood Wanting though I never would Trying though I know it's wrong Blowing it to hell and gone Wishing though I never could Blow up the upside world

    I always thought Chris and Layne Staley were playing up the notion of mental illness in their lyrics. I was so fucking wrong. It was straight from the heart with them, and I was too dumb to see it.

  • @toocoolfortheroom380

    @toocoolfortheroom380

    It's awesome that you interpret Chris & Layne with a better ear now. I grew up listening to them so it was never an issue for me hearing exactly what it was as new music. It seems lately the younger generation getting into SG have a preconception and hear everything as brought on by mental illness or depression. It's just the Blues man! People have been singing the blues for Centuries...doesn't mean they're clinically depressed. Depressed people don't do what Chris did...which was rock THOUSANDS of shows for Millions of fans. He had some demons...sure...and those are what brought out his dark/bluesey side...but to listen with the bias of how his life ended (hazed by meds) isn't fair. It's hard to avoid but we gotta try harder...like I similarly did with Jim Morrison & the Doors when I started listening to them for example. Just turn that shit waaaay up and if it makes you move (emotionally or physically) then move...simple as that.

    I stick to my Ipod the past few years. Occasionally i am surprised to find a handful of good new songs , but only like one or two from different genres that total said handful. The 90's tho, if only we could somehow utilize a tenth of a tenth of a percent of what made it all so special then and bring it into the here and now. So m people only like what they are told is good music, or what is new.

It was a pleasure growing up in the late-80s and early-90s with so many great bands to choose from. Good music was coming at us right and left. Chris left us way too early. Hope he's jamming with Jimi, Kurt, Layne, Scott, and a long list of other legends. RIP, Chris, and thank you so much for your contributions to music. Music has lost quite a talent today.

    Despite the tone of the music, the lyrics are pretty uplifting. The song is fromt eh point of view of somebody who is often depressed or unsatisfied with how events unfold, desperately trying to be positive or to make things right, sometimes without luck. In spite of all their pain and vulnerability, this person tries their best to help himself and others, and will not give up easily. In combination with the video, another layer of depth to this character as someone who struggles to protect their ideals from the onslaught of society (Corrupt, abusive authority. Meaningless, wanton, loveless sex. Pursuit of money instead of happiness. Violence instead of understanding. Drugs for you to rely on to feel happy instead of learning to cope with suffering. Us vs Them mentality of nations, etc). "Blow up the outside world" meaning fuck all of that, stick to your ideals if they help you and those around you, be yourself, and don't conform to the damaging aspects of society.
