Considering I don't put my phone flat on a surface while playing games, watching Facebook, KZread videos or a Netflix episode, HTC all the way, it sounds better the way it actually matters for 90% of my usage.

Why so many people is saying that the htc win. I love htc. But the clear winner is lg. Just my opinion.

You should have used theatre mode on the U12+. Music mode is to hear voice clarity. I always just use theatre mode on my U11, in my opinion it just sounds fuller. Music mode always sounds about tinny to me, more for headphones.

Wow lg g7 is so clear and louder..... really surprising!!!

Wow the G7 sounds really good. That new design with the sound chamber is a definite win.

With the Thunder track, the G7 has much clearer vocal in all 3 surfaces. The U12+ may have more bass, but the vocal and background music were mixed up too much, which resulted in an uncomfortable listening experience.

Yeah, I keep seeing +htc u12 wins, but I'm not hearing it. The LG destroyed it when it was on the table by far and on all of the others they sound pretty similar but the HTC has a rough distortion to it. Very un-htc like really.

What if using a case on G7?... Will the boombox effect still work effectively??

Htc is crisper in the high frecuency, lg has more bass but not detailed highs, Htc has better definition, and lg sounds louder but not very defined.

Someone who has a clue about audio performance.

Thank you for showing how both perform in one's hand. All the reviews of the G7 show it on a flat surface where it will really shine, but you don't get that boom box effect while holding it. Not putting the G7 down.....to just pointing out the limitation.

Did you put the HTC in music mode or left it in theater mode ? I have the u11 and it's the same on the 12 while you play music you can change the mode in the notifications bar

You should also try the theatre mode on the HTC. It produces much better sound, even for music. This video is worthless

Music mode is for voice clarity. I always use THEATRE mode when listening through the speakers, it has a fuller sound on my U11.

The real worthlessness of this video and how many people use their phone as a speaker on a table? You're normally holding it or have headphones on. If you really want your phone to be stationery and care about it being louder or bassier, a cheap bluetooth speaker will destroy any phone.

LG did a great job but...how often do you use your phone while it's laying on the table?? In hands bass of both phones sounded similiar but HTC had much more pleasing higher tones. So HTC for me.

You should put U12+ in theater mode, music mode doesn't cut it for some reason. I don't know why music mode isn't good as theater mode. It is very strange. Theater mode is more loud, clear, crisp and "pungy".

As far as I know Theatre mode produces true stereo sound with both speakers acting the same while on music mode the upper speaker only plays the highs and the bottom speaker just the mids and lows. The result is a mono speaker which never sounds as good as a stereo one.

nearly what Malte said and also the music mode is a mode which doesn't really have an effect applied, unlike theatre mode. Also it really depends on what song you listen to and how you hold your phone, the music mode is made for holding it in potrait while threate mode is made for holding it in landscape, so you get the "immersive/stereo" sound

What is the criteria? The u12 has a much more richer sound you can hear everything while the guys is just loud and heavy on the treble and the vocals. Loudness doesn't equal better. The g7 just feel short for me but I like a bass heavy sound.

I like the BoomSound much better when held in the hand... The G7 needs a surface to work properly...

Very strange and unexpected. Maybe something wrong with the settings. I would also like to hear other songs, an impression can be different. The format is also important. I don't think that HTC is as bad as it seems. My old one M8 still sounds better than many modern flagships.

Ripsime d yeah shouldn't have been set in MUSIC mode. THEATRE mode is a much fuller sound, I use it all the time on my U11.

Im an ex user of the m8 but my current g7 speaker destroys it by a large margin. And I used to love my m8 for its speakers.

why using teather mode on the HTC?

I never place my phone on a table to listen to stuff sooooo...why does how my phone sounds on a table matter again? I'm always holding my phone.

Interesting comparison. Though I feel like different songs would be more beneficial than different surfaces. Also, is there an option to not use any equalizer modes on the U12+? I remember on my older HTC phones, leaving all that off was usually best for sound.

If you the U12 sounds anything like my old HTC 10.Then its DAC/amplifier should trounce the LG G7.I just got the LG G8 but i think i will be returning it.Great sound with strong bass but very fatiguing on the ears.HTC 10 has an amazing DAC and amplifier combo.Warm,detailed and unfatiguing euphonic sound.I wish they kept the headphone jack and the exact same DAC and amplifier they used in the HTC 10.HTC is following the trends like blind fools, when they had the best audio in ANY phone I've ever heard.

Wow the sound from the LG on the flat surface was so full and crisp, smoked HTC. But I think most people would be holding their phones, not laying it down like a speaker. In terms of practical use, I think the HTC is better.

@TechRadarMe - guys, can you make a test of their DACs? (With all the specs and manufactors, which brands DACs do both use). I would be interested which of them is better for audiophiles with the highest fidelity of sound in professional headphones. Thanks in advance.

The lg sound is amazing

Loving the LG loudness. But HTC is my favorite phone company tho. LG

would be nice to have a dbi read out because the lg sounded muffled and quiter than htc u12 and if all volume is maxed on both devices from experience my old htc m7 had a higher volume out put than other phones had at that time and some phone roms had a software limit when it came to how loud the speaker could be

Excellent review..... It's hard to believe that reviewers don't give too much attention to in depth speaker quality test in their reviews.... In my opinion not everyone like me would like to put on headphones every time.. Specially when at home you want to have an emmersive experience while keeping the phone on a desk or couch listening to music even from another room ... I am still hanging on to moto x pure just coz it makes a huge difference.....

So the Lg has louder and clearer sounds, but that's it, if you want to buy a phone specifically for good speakers, go for the Lg, but if you want a phone that has much more +'s in things, pick Htc, i'm not here to trigger Lg fans, i'm just saying my opinion.

LG G7 clearly the winner, Everyone says htc is good but I definitely says that LG has it's own classy.

Lg g7 by a mile. This phone will probably be as criminally underrated as my present phone, the lg v30. Why? Because ""its not by samsung or apple"", but these phones are just as good, if not better. Im on my 4th lg, 5th when i get the g7. (Im perfectly happy with my v30, but my son is desperate to inherit it, he's seen how good it is!!)

Most V30 and G6 users in Australia are still stuck on the January security patch. LG is blaming Google for this. LG is great, as long as software updates and security patches aren’t important to you.

Ohh gee! I didnt even need to swap to any new model since 5 years back... Since im on the Legendary HTC One M7 - That was hailed by every single revewer when it came out! By many seen as the best Android phone in History. Used as a Daily Driver ever wince these 5 years & still working! Need i mention if i will choose any other brand but HTC again...? Haha - Nay, i do not!

Except for the glass table htc sounded louder to my ears through this phone at least but LG sounds far better and fuller and clearer

Are you kidding me? You tested the lg g7 based on phone speakers. Lg phones have a hi fi dac in them. Test headphone output via binaural recording. Who in the world uses a high end phones directly for music or movies.

Good video. I believe handheld speaker comparisons should include cupping the speaker since that's how most people listen to their devices, but I do wish LG would've incorporated dual speakers along with this boombox system

From your review LG sounded better and it might be better but from my experience with HTC since the M10 the audio is much better on the speakers with the THEATER MODE.LG makes excellent devices but the HTC 12+ is better than U11/Plus and for me they were the best devices of 2017 along with the Pixel and Lg V30.I didn't forget the NOTE but it was to expensive and because we talk about money,the NOTE can crush the iphone X any day.

I just purchased the LG G7, it actually sounds better in the hand. It seems there is a speaker towards the back. And the bass is incredible.

Thanks for the comparison, it was very helpful, very few people care about speaker comparisons these days. However I felt like the microphone that recorded was very poor quality. Regardless of the microphone, I think the LG produces a good sound, and if you lay it down on the table it just creates a reverb-kinda effect, just as you said, and I don't like it. HTC sound was a little more lacking in the bass department, but a huge plus is that it's a stereo setup, which, ever since I rooted my LG G5 and turned the earpiece into a speaker, is way more important for me. The difference between mono and stereo is like... epic! Stereo setups all the way.

Based on these recordings, the HTC has brutal distortion. 40% of the sound is lost. LG is much clearer. I'd take clear and full sound over marginally louder any day

I'm the user of htc10&12+ 1.12+has large advancement in high frequency. 2.But12+ kick out Dolby Audio,it doesn't sound clear.

The problem of this video is only testing bass.

Overall U12 plus sounds better in hand while G7 is better on surface. I like the boom box setup, but U12 plus is just fantastic.

unfair test. hTC's theater mode will release its full power.

The sound of the HTC U12 + is powerful and real, it is excellent. The sound of the LG G7 Thinq is not bad, it is also very good but it is less powerful than that of the HTC U12 +, it is soft and not so realistic. Both do a very good job, but HTC here takes the lead. It's just my opinion! BTW excellent test-review. 👍🏻💯

LG sounds smoother. But i will Never select a smartphone based on just Sound Quality. Check the specifications and youll see the HTC U12+ smokes basically anything until Pixel 3 arrives - Which will be around October... (& still if u wait all that time youll get it with the annoying Notch, whitch the U12+ wont have! - Easy Pick! ;)

What are you on about? How does the HTC U12+ smoke everything spec wise? Almost all flagship devices have the exact same spec. I am defo buying the LG G7, that speaker, quad dac and wide angle camera and the better screen to body ratio is enough reason to choose it over the HTC.

@3DFX LOL what are you trying to prove? I still standby what I said, HTC U12+ has the same specs as every flagship currently on the market. It has the exact same specs as the LG G7 apart from the RAM. The G7 is far superior in all other aspects.

It's all about what HTC is doing with those specs......and yes they are smoking the competition. Buy what you want......just don't be like the guy's at work with their iPhone's and s9's asking me why my pics and videos are some much better than theirs. Clearly my u11 is better with the same specs.

The LG sounds better because it has a resonance chamber to react with the surface you put the phone on. That's why it sounds better on the glass/wood surface but gets almost equal with HTC in hand.

You should use good microphone...

U12+ Is very good (Beautiful Design), but, in a matter of support, some Interface design and Technology, LG is much better. And LG V35+ ThinQ Smokes to HTC U12+. Pressure "Sensitive" Buttons (Fail), you need press little bit hard (Like generic buttons)

Sounded to me Like HTC was louder only because it fired the sound straight up to to the mic but the sound quality seamed to crackle vs the LG seamed more puchier and bassy with better sound quality. G sounded the best on wood. Now do a mic test in wind and in a loud environment and LG would win there too.

The other phone manufacturers are improving their in-hand sound (which is how we use our phones 95% of the time) but LG says "Hey guys, we need to improve our surface sound!" Stupid decision. Who likes all their sound coming from the right side of the phone? Not me. Who likes being able to cover the only speaker and lose all sound? Not me. LG, this sounds good on a table but that is not how we USE our phones.

HTC wins this but let's be honest. The only audio experience that matters is with the phone face on while watching content, or with headphones, which the HTC would also win.

HTC .. Sony is a good phone and the best company phone but not good in marketing .

In my humble opinion the htc sounded way better than LG. Although the track which was chosen was totally unsuitable for the test too noisy. Even I who I am not an audio engineer can here that htc is much better

HTC has dual speaker setup and you're exposing one speaker to microphone. That's why it is sounding funny. BoomSound never goes wrong...
