For Smashing Pumpkins in regards to Billy Gish: Strat with regular single coils (Billy's was a 70s with flat pole pickups) while plugged into an ADA MP-1 Preamp using his Marshall JCM800 (modded to use KT 88 power tubes) as the power amp. Pretty straight forward other than some leslie type effects for Crush. Siamese Dream: Strat with lace sensor pickups into an opamp version Big Muff (Plenty of clones online) into just the JCM 800 while using a MXR Distortion II for guitar solos. As far as effects, EHX Micro Synth for the melting guitar solo effect on Today, Ebow for the infamous 40 guitar track part in Soma, and just about a lot of other ones. Mellon Collie: Strat with lace sensors still plugged into a Marshall JMP-1 Preamp utilizing an Eventide Harmonizer rack unit for his trippy effects along with other rack units and being powered by the Mesa Strategy 500 Power amp (The power amp was what gave that JMP-1 the low end...pretty sure he used KT88s in that too) as far as effects...mainly rack units and a few pedals along the way. Haven't really taken the time to check up on his recent rig but lately but that's the quick summary of it. James Iha usually had the same gear with a few different effects here and there like the Digitech Rack Unit for the solo to Zero.

Love how much you know. I've always been a casual Pumpkins listener, and remember when my friends got into melancholy back in the day. Being a metal guy that's also a recent strat convert, and kinda wanting to stick to single coils, I find myself taking more of an interest these days. Particularly, Zero is often stuck in my head. I know their crunch sound is fuzz based, and it sounds pretty awesome imo. What I'm really curious about atm tho, is what in the living hell James Iha is doing with that solo in Zero. I just figured he was doing some whammy/pitch shifting, a la Tom Morello. From watching a couple live videos though, it looks like he's using a sharpie or some kind of pen as a slide. His strumming technique makes me wonder if he uses it as a strumming implement as well. Perhaps you could shed some light here?

Disagree with the guitar choice as it wasn't used on any of their classic recordings. Needs to be a 70's looking stat with lace sensor pickups, or other humbuckers in a single coil form factor. I would have gone for a squier deluxe hot rails strat (even looks like the old billy corgan signature fenders). A big muff, mxr distortion +, and some kind of phaser

I agree it doesn't have to be the same exact gear, but disagree they got the sound right, it sounded too muddy to me and only focussed on one aspect of their sound rather than the dreamy spaced out bits that are just as important. I just don't think it was particularly informative, Corgan signature guitar and big muff are obvious choices that people could arrive at after a cursory google, would prefer these videos go into some detail of the key equipment a band used and how it contributed to the sound, in this case 70's strat with lace sensors, and then make a case for another guitar being able to get the similar sound, the reverend guitar is very different I think. With the pedals, big muff is a solid choice, but there are many cheap alternatives that are just as good, and then they could have incorporated a phaser and delay for the more quieter parts. Could have also discussed dual fuzz pedals like the devi ever rocket that give both a solid rhythm fuzz, and the super nasal lead tone, maybe touched on his Corgan's use of the EHX micro synth for lead tones, or even e-bows. I know they have a limited budget and are limited by the stock that is in the store, but think this was a missed opportunity as the Pumpkins really had some of the best and most varied guitar textures

Fuck yeah! Easily my favorite alternative band of the 90's. A while ago Billy did a quick video (it was called Stompland and you can find it here on youtube) showing off a bunch of his pedals that he has used throughout the years. He showed one of his Siamese Dream Muffs with the settings still marked on it. Volume 12 o'clock, Tone 1 o'clock, Sustain at full blast. He also said he used a Phase 100 for solos with the speed all the way down and chose random settings for the intensity Lastly he also showed off the MXR Distortion II he used through the Muff on solos with the Siamese markings as well. 4, 11, 11, 2 (o'clock) As for a future suggestion, I'd say CKY. They have such a unique sound.

Great video. One of my all time favourite bands, so much so that I bought the silver version of the Reverend BC from yourselves a couple of months ago. Fantastic guitar. I think I read somewhere that Billy was looking for that Sabbath tone when he was collaborating on his signature pickups. It really is an awesome guitar.

CHERUB ROCK FOR THE WIN! and let me say you nailed this one!!! can you do a sound like Mac Demarco? he has a simple but fun rig either him or George Benson (without using his signature gear cos they're expensive) maybe even Hank Marvin of The Shadows or A7X and lemmie say while the DSL 40 is the big daddy of affordable Marshalls, i'm more sold on the Blackstar HT club 40 and for once i didn't just Pool out my usual requests and just narrowed it down to 3 cos Kai Burns says i do it EVERY TIME

I think you guys totally nailed this one. Every time you started to play I was waiting for billy to start singing until I realized he wasn't there. For those squabbling about guitar choice, I get it, but it was a video about how to compile his exact rig, it was how to sound like him. Surly there is more than one way to skin a cat, and these guys definitely found one of those ways.
