@Dick Pouw you might want to check out my complete setup guide for the dbx 286s. In the video I explain what all the knobs on the 286s do and what to set them to. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pq6arbijpMmblLA.html @Curtis If you have any questions about the 286s I'll gladly answer them. UPDATE: I got my Sanken COS11 back from Markertek. They did a fantastic job terminating 2 of my mics to a TA5 connector so I can use them with Lectrosonics radios. The 2 mics with 2 day shipping... get ready.... $48 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They sound crystal clear. What makes this such a great story is that the COS11D needs a resistor installed when on a Lectrosonics. The Markertek folks must have installed it inside the 5 pin connector because I can see it. Lectrosonics quoted $240 + shipping. It pays to shop around.

Here’s another unpopular answer to Greg Palmer’s question on how to reduce noise on location... use a Schoeps Super CMIT shotgun mic! I’ve been doing that recently and it is stunning. A truly magic mic.

I have a mkh416 and I love the way it sounds on my voice. What you said about how it sounds with more sibilant voices is something I suspected because my voice is low/ deep and dull, if you will. Examples that I can think of are the late Guru from Gangstarr and Avery Brooks, the captain on Star Trek Deep Space Nine. The mkh416 sharpens my voice. It gives it just the right amount of high end on top of all that bass. Before this, I had purchased the sm7b and the re20. Never had a problem with the sound. But this mkh416 though...

You bring up a great point. The 416 is really good on "dark" voices like you describe - brings in a little high-end sparkle.

If you get a chance to listen to the MKH8060. I find it has the right balance of high & lows. I rented one from a production supplier before I bought it.

Yesterday I watched a Deity video comparison of Sennheiser MKH416 vs a Deity shotgun mic (I'm not quite sure which exact model - something mk2, I believe). I was not surprised to find that I still think the 416 sounds better, but I was surprised that the off-axis rejection of the 416 wasn't all that narrow. At 45˚ there was next to no rejection! However from 90˚ and all around the back the rejection was really good; there didn't seem to be any lobe at 180˚. Unless, of course, the info on the screen was wrong about which of the two we were currently listening to.

Yes, 45 degrees is going to be picked up by all but the longest of long shotgun mics. 90 degrees is where things should start to fall off quite a lot for mics with very focused polar patterns.

Hi Curtis, I did have a question but i didn't think it was appropriate for the Q&A session. Do you have any idea when you will be publishing your review of the PortKeys HS7T? I ask because I'm interested in it's sibling the HH7 that looks to be the same monitor but only has hdmi support. -Dan

Hi Dan, it should be in the next 4 weeks. I can say that it has been a good monitor so far. I had one occasion where it powered itself off about 5 weeks ago but hasn't done that again so I think I may not have had the power cable attached securely. Wanted to give a it a bit more time to confirm. Looking good. I wish it had waveform and vectorscope monitors but the false color implementation is good.

@@curtisjudd At IBC 2018 SWIT announced the CM-55C & CM-S73H and they are supposed to have waveforms, vector scopes, false color, and what they are calling super false color. Neither is for sale yet as far as i know, but they do have some specs and marketing images up on their website for the 5.5" model. www.swit.cc/productshow.aspx?id=320 The scopes and waveforms look like they might be a let down, because in the marketing images they are small inset windows like on the GH5. The super false color looks interesting though, as it only alters the image for specific ire values like middle grey and skin tones etc.

@@Dans-hobbies Thanks for the details Dan. Looks interesting. I like the idea of a single joystick for controlling things (maybe? would need to see how it is implemented) and the dummy battery for powering cameras is nice. I think one of the biggest advantages the PortKeys has is its high bright output (>1000 nits) which is pretty helpful when shooting outdoors.
