Sound for Video Session: Earthworks SV33, ETHOS, & SR314 Samples, Q&A

In this week's Sound for Video Session, we pull out three of my favorite microphones for spoken word audio from Earthworks - the SV33, ETHOS, and SR314 - and have a listen to each of them back to back. We then answer your sound for video related questions.
If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses at school.learnlightandsound.com including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F6, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders. We have a course on sound for live-streaming with the ATEM Mini and just added Introduction to Izotope RX for Dialogue Audio.

Wow That is a Canon C70 not C700. Where was my mind at. This was one of favorite streams of the weekend. Really amazed how well the Schoeps did. Curtis you, and Dani do great work. Thank you for being here.

31:24 Schoeps Mk41 vs SV33 - Thanks, very helpful comparison! Schoeps to me seems somewhat dull in the upper midrange register - I once compared MK41 to U87ai and had the same impression - preferred the U87ai back then (voice / acoustic guitar).

I am in love with the SV33. Stupidly expensive - not a sensible choice obviously. But the way it sounds is magical. That being said, the KMS32 can be great too.

I'm looking for the best mic for a sit down interview, and I don't want a laveler or headset, the SR314 sounds great but can you use it as a boom mic or is a supercarioid a better option and if so what do you recommend? Thanks!

    I’d recommend the Sennheiser MKH8050: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hI2LppeweZmoac4.html

I have both the Icon Pro and a recently acquired sr314. For the Icon I can put a clown nose on it and the plossives are tamed by and large. The 314 appears more "forward", hotter even, than the Icon. Putting the same sort of clown nose works, especially when speaking off axis and not directly into it. Have you found an effective foam windscreen for the 314?

I've just been using the extra thick SM7B foam. Not a perfect fit, but seems to do the job decently.

Nice comparison. I've been looking at the SR314 about since it came out. I've actually seen it used a lot with music videos on the "stories" channel (acoustic/"stripped down" covers from the Scary Pockets folks). Most of the uses I've seen have it on a stand at some distance from the singer, so plosives may not be a problem at that distance (though who knows what they did in post). The Schoeps would not be my choice. I still like that SR314 and the ETHOS seems to get a little wooly, but that may be desirable for some voices. (All Earthworks mics seem to be electret condensers, which used to have somewhat of a negative connotation, but, obviously work well for their engineering targets!) [p.s. edit : you can upload videos with non-lossy FLAC audio to KZread - might need other s/w - I use Compressor. Obviously YT will compress the snot out of whatever you send up, but at least they're starting with the original.]

'Obviously YT will compress the snot out of whatever you send up' - compress in the sense of reduce information / audio detail? I did not realize youtube is actively applying audio compression in the sense of using a Compressor so far - in contrary, if my material is too compressed they will reduce volume... (right click on the video: 'stats for nerds' will show the details). PS: I upload ProRes with 16 bit wav audio.

@@tom_k_d I mean compress as in convert to a lossy, or make even more lossy. They can always adjust "loudness" with whatever is left over. When I upload, and sometimes it's only 720p (the new SD format), right after it's processed you can download an SD file, which I assume is what they're going to send out, perhaps worst case. It's about 1/5 the size of my original, and the audio is 128kbps stereo ...

@@KloderTXThanks for clairification - I upload in FHD, and notice a slight degradation in clarity in the very upper register compared to my .wav masters, but no other changes. I make test uploads to see how my mixes translate to the lossy youtube codec before I finally go public - sometimes yt benefits from .5 dB air band boost.

Ah misses this live session :-/ regarding so many mics to choose from, there’s the concept of “option paralysis”. If people lack an intelligent approach they will do a worse or slower choice if they select between 20 options instead of 3 options. Because it’s harder to understand which option matches your needs best when there are too many options and fatigue might set in, making buyer just pick whatever in the end. Slightly OT; I’m currently in a healthy “no need for more audio gear” state and has made the mistake of getting done the keyboard hole of KZread. “I need a mobile keyboard that doesn’t suck because the keyboard at office X sucks” was the mistaken thought I made almost a month ago and currently the financial impact is limited but so much headspace wasted on getting to grips with this rabbit hole. One might think that should be rather simple but it is an insane multi-level matrix of options… It seems whatever gear there is there is an insanely deep hole of options (Just plain keycaps have so many dimensions in the spec matrixes.)
