Curtis Judd Yes sir. Advanced mode helps but with headphones plugged in, the side pot is unreachable in my Orca bag.

True but... it was not designed to be a location sound bag recorder. However like with many other devices ingenuity and demand can overcome intended purpose. As a result all of the MixPres have been pressed into bag service with varying degrees of success. I think if SD had it to do over again knowing what they know now they would design them to better meet customer needs particularly in bag use.

Great stuff - these discussions you have with Cary work really well!

I like my MixPre 10T too! I also like the Rode NTG-3 shotgun witch is like a 416 with a slightly wider pickup pattern, and also designed to handle damp environments.

Cary Judd LOL the NTG-3 also comes with a waterproof metal tube to keep the mic in!

My desert island choice... iPhone 6S with its headphone jack, Rode iXY stereo mic, and the Rode Rec app. Simple, small, no cables, great sound, and post editing software all in one neat package.

Thanks. He does not have an active channel unless he's been hiding it from me. He's really busy shooting for a living.

I would just bring my Rode SmarLav+ and my phone to the island because currently I need to pay my bills. lol But it's nice seeing that you and your brother share some of the same passions and can geek out on gear like that. It's heartwarming :)

Hello Curtis! Happy (late) new year from Korea. I'm curious if how do you think about Tascam DR-680 mk2 (or 3 if released). When I was back in Academy, I used to use it all the time. And after I purchased Zoom F8n recently, I don't even think about that recorder. Seems like Zoom is much satisfying for me in a lot of different ways. Is it the type of a gear that can be compared with F8, or F4, Mixpre so on and so forth? I wonder your opinion and the following reason.

Hi! I haven't used the DR-680mkII so I don't have an opinion but it seems like it has similar preamps to the rest of its DR line (except perhaps the DR-100mkIII). So I don't have a lot of hope that it would outshine the Zoom F series or Sound Devices MixPre series. But I'll have to try some time (alas I cannot afford to buy it so I'll have to somehow borrow one).

Could you please share your thoughts on cheap studio headphones like AKG K44 and ATH-M50x copies like Marantz MPH-2 or Dexibell DX HF7. what do you think about headphones like these. Are they any good for sound recording (Boom operator) I had a Sennheiser HD 200 PRO but it was so fragile.

Hi Curtis! What do you think about new Aston Stealth mic? You can find information about it on website astonmics.com In one side this mic has very interesting history of creation - 33 the best engineers was working under it. But on another side if you look at the Owner Book (you can download it on website) you can notice that recession of hi frequencies starts from 10 khz. But in tech specs they declare 20hz-20khz. And this mic is positioned like RE-20 and sm7b killer.

Oh, I would choose the MixPre over the ZOOM F6. It'll be a tougher decision if/when Zoom makes an F8nII (or similar) with the dual ADC and 32-bit float recording.

The 416 high freq emphasis can be nice if it is deep inside a furry windscreen.

Deserted island, hu? (Glad it isn't a desert island). So what are we supposed to record? Warblers? if I'm allowed to bring my musical instruments, there's of course me singing and playing. How does one choose one mic for both music and wildlife? Possibly the 416, except that I don't own one. If I had owned a Telinga parabola system, I might have chosen a Line Audio OM1 or CM3 (could I bring two as a stereo pair?), or possibly a Sennheiser ME62. Not having a parabola, I could try the ME64, 66 or 67, but I really have no idea how these Sennheisers would sound for music. I think I might just choose my Sennheiser MKE 440, my Canon Eos 70D (but I wonder what lenses), my SoundDevices MixPre 3M and the relevant cables and adapters. But I do think I'd regret my choices, no matter what I decided.

I can't see that anyone's asked, so I will. Birth order? Based on personality, I'm guessing Curtis is the older. Practical, responsible, probably uses a calculator to split the bill at a restaurant. Cary's more artistic, creative, laid back. Cary probably is a bigger tipper.
